Elegant wooden boxed golf gift sets from Billy Golf Ltd comprise professionally designed golf equipment
City dwellers the world over are eager to get away from their desks and head for the gym or the great outdoors. In parallel with this trend is an ever-growing demand for ancillary goods in the sports, camping and fitness lines, and Hong Kong has plenty of variety on offer.
Typical of the sporting products available from Hong Kong are the golfing accessories manufactured by Billy Golf Ltd, a company established in 2000. "We make gifts and accessories including golf balls, ball markers, ball holders and tees but not the actual clubs," says sales executive Pinky Wong. "We also offer a set comprising a selection of those items packed into an attractive gift box."
Noting that the company uses both paper and wooden gift boxes, Wong says FOB Hong Kong prices vary widely, depending on the contents requested by clients. "Our main export destinations are the US and Canada," she continues. "Demand from Asia is also strong, while Germany is our best market in Europe."
According to Wong, while the company also benefits from Hong Kong pro shop sales of its Billy Golf branded items, "in the main, we are an OEM producer".
Production takes place at Billy Golf's 2,700-square-metre, 200-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. A minimum order is 500-1,000 units, depending on the items, and delivery is 45 days after confirmation of order.
A good lantern is an essential item for camping and Fee Tat Holdings (HK) Ltd, established in 1970, is an ISO 9001-certified manufacturer with a wealth of experience in producing lanterns. "We mostly use krypton bulbs as they have a better performance for only a slightly higher cost," says export manager Peter Ho. "This inert gas filling also provides a brighter light."
For campers, there is the Leopard model, a rechargeable U-tube fluorescent lantern that is also weatherproof. Another style, the Explorer, is simpler, and has a flashing function for emergencies.
"Both models have plastic housings and they are pretty basic, as we think campers in general like to keep things simple," points out Ho.
Prices for these products depend "on the quantity ordered and the features required". A minimum order is 500 pieces per model and delivery time is 30 days after order confirmation. The plastics used are sourced in Taiwan and production takes place at a 100,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen.
A trading company established in 2000, Orient Health & Fitness Co Ltd offers a wide range of fitness accoutrements.
"Our best-selling line at present is a yoga set comprising a mat, a yoga ball, a cotton strap for holding poses, PVC wedges/supports and a latex resistance band," says marketing manager Jackie Wong, who has extensive experience in this field.
"In addition, we offer exercise bikes and home gym items like steppers, treadmills and walkers for exercising without leaving the home. Also attracting good orders are dumb-bell sets, a gymnastic ball - or fitness dome, as we call it - a foot massage machine and a host of accessories for trimming the abdominal muscles or doing stomach rolls."
There are also PVC cushions for floor work, latex back strengtheners and even a digital speed rope for checking the calorific value of training stints. "It is not easy competing against mainland goods but we manage to maintain healthy sales to Europe and the US on competitive terms," says Wong.
Noting that the PVC comes from Taiwan and the latex from the mainland, he adds, "we usually ask for minimum orders that fill one TEU".
Cycling is a popular sport and Senan Int'l Ltd, established in 1991, manufactures and exports an impressive range of bicycles. "We offer mountain bikes, hybrid classic bikes, racing bikes, premium bikes, freestyle BMX models and children's bikes," says marketing executive Tracy Or.
Among popular products exported to the US and Europe is model Pro11a600, a 26-inch, 21-speed full suspension mountain bike with an aluminium-alloy frame. "We also received a lot of orders from the US last year for what we term beach cruisers. These sell well in bicycle boutiques," she adds.
Senan uses various grades of Shimano components for its higher-priced bikes. "We can offer Shimano accessories and fittings or mainland versions," says Or. "The various combinations of components can make quite a difference when it comes to quality and reasonable prices, and the mainland versions are usually found on our cheaper bikes. We also source some components in Taiwan."
Senan offers a choice of hi-tensile steel or alloy frames, and production takes place at an ISO 4210, 4,200-square-foot, 80-worker factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland. "Following ISO certification last year, we are starting to see better sales figures," says Or, noting that a minimum order is 365 bicycles or one FEU.
Hong Kong clearly has fitness in mind, and that can only be good for business all round.
