Timely Gifts(HKTDC Watch & Clock, Vol 04,2002)
Time For Fun
A cube and a globe form the basis for these two crystal clocks from WIO Development Co, which sells mainly to buyers in the UK.
CLOCKS made of crystal and acrylic make ideal gifts and promotional items. Inexpensive, yet usually well designed, these useful products tend to take pride of place on the tabletop or mantelpiece. A number of Hong Kong companies make these much-appreciated timepieces for importers around the world.
WIO Development Co has been making crystal clocks as gifts and premium items, trophies and even ornaments for longer than five years. "What appeals most to our clients in the UK are our innovative designs, simultaneously simple but classic," says William Ting, business development manager.
The company is an OEM manufacturer. "We welcome customers' own designs. We also have in-house designers who come up with new models for each new season," says Ting.
WIO recently introduced three new crystal clocks, which have proved to be popular on the strength of their elegant designs and competitive prices.
Model CL104 is a crystal globe clock available for US$4.50. Another successful new item is the model CL215 crystal cube clock at US$4.20. A slightly more intricate crystal design is CL235, a triangular clock priced at US$6.45. All prices are per piece, FOB Hong Kong.
"We can guarantee timely delivery and good quality as we have our own dedicated factory in Shanghai. Moreover, the crystal for making the clocks is sourced on the Chinese mainland," Ting says.
WIO does not specify a minimum order "as this is negotiable", while delivery is 45-60 days from order confirmation.
Artax Industrial Mfy Co has a 25-year-plus track record manufacturing crystallite and acrylic promotional and gift products. This led to the company offering acrylic table clocks.
"Most of the designs for our acrylic table clocks actually come from clients, but we have a few own-designs," says Johnny Suen, marketing manager. "We make different categories of these clocks, but the table versions are the most popular."
For a 3,000-piece order, the company sells its models AC300 and AC520 acrylic table clocks for US$2.80 each, while models AC521 and AC522 are at US$2.85 apiece. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.
Artax moved its factory to Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland about 10 years ago to take advantage of lower costs. The company has an annual turnover of more than US$1m and traditionally sells clocks to buyers in the US and Western Europe. Crystallite and acrylic come from Taiwan, South Korea and Japan.
Hong Kong Yee Ya Crystal Arts Ltd has a popular design in its JB001 crystal trophy clock, says account executive Charles Chan. This OEM manufacturer also launched a series of new designs this season.
Models ZBO10 and ZBO35, priced at US$9 and US$10, respectively, come with laser printed patterns. "Embossed inside the crystal body, the patterns are three-dimensional in nature," says Chan.
Yee Ya also produces the model ZBO59 crystal clock, with either 3-D logos or patterns for US$10 each, while model QO636 is a "crystal block" design priced at US$15. "This crystal block design can also hold a compass or other instrument in addition to the clock," notes Chan.
Yee Ya manufactures its products in a 3,600-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland where it sources the K9 material for its clocks.
The company sells its products mainly into Hong Kong and other places in Asia. All prices are per piece FOB Hong Kong, and a minimum order is 100 pieces per item. Delivery is 30-45 days from order confirmation.
Time Fashion Enterprise Co, established in Hong Kong in 1988, sells crystal and glass clocks under the Papilon brand in Japan, the US, the Middle East and Europe.
"We recently launched three new crystal clocks and they are quite popular. They make ideal gifts, as they are unique in appearance but not too expensive. Our in-house designers usually create 10 new designs a month," says Jacky Ng, managing director.
Model Y001S, priced at US$13 each, is a tabletop grandfather clock; model Y384S, in the form of a small castle, has instant appeal with clients at US$12 per piece; and model Y317B is a rotating crystal clock with a unique design very popular at US$39.
All prices are per piece FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 50 pieces per model, for delivery 30-35 days after order confirmation.
Time Fashion's factory is in Guangxi on the Chinese mainland, making it closer to sources of the lead crystal and glass used for making its clocks.
