Sports Glasses

Base-curve sunlenses provide added UV protection on these goggle-like, one-piece metal sunglasses from Elegance Optical Mfy Ltd.

SPORTS glasses cater to a diverse market demand. This outdoor category includes fashion glasses, ladies' sunglasses and unisex sunglasses. The market is active and expanding, and Hong Kong produces in both quantity and quality.

Elegance Optical Mfy Ltd has been in the business since 1985, and today has a production capacity of about 600,000 pairs per month. The sports glasses range includes metal designs, some using titanium, combination types using plastic and metal and plastic glasses produced by injection moulding machines.

This maker offers handmade acetate sports glasses, regular sunglasses and rimless glasses. The in-house brand name is Rococo, and materials used include titanium, Monel and stainless steel, all imported from Germany or Japan.

One high-volume manufacturer of sports glasses is Eversun Industrial (Hong Kong) Ltd. Besides frames, this company makes lenses in-house.

Manager Shirley Cheung says, "Some designs come from customers who have seen something interesting and want to know if we can produce it or alter it to suit their needs."

Spectacle lenses commonly employ three materials: crown glass, CR resin and polycarbonate. In terms of the best safety lenses, polycarbonate ranks first, followed by CR39 resins and then treated crown glass.

Cheung acknowledges that the company's lens-making capability affords a considerable advantage among Hong Kong producers of eyeglasses. "We use a lot of acrylic and polycarbonate," she says. "Polycarbonate lenses block the widest range of UV."

Manufacturing of lenses and frames takes place at the company's factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland.

"For plastic frame sports glasses, every year we have about 50 new designs. We can also create different colours quite easily. For metal frame models, we usually produce as many as 200 or 300 new designs each year because the tooling is cheaper to set up," says Cheung.

Main markets are France, Germany, the Netherlands and Portugal. FOB Hong Kong prices, per pair, for plastic frame sports glasses are US$6-10, while metal types are priced at US$7-12 but can be offered for as little as US$1 per pair at the low-end.

Minimum order for the metal types is 25 dozen pairs per model per colour. For the plastic type it is 100 dozen pairs per model per colour. Delivery is usually 30 days from confirmation of order.

Using pure titanium in its higher-end models is Wing Fung Optical Mfy Ltd, a leading producer of metal-frame sports glasses. Wing Fung has a full range of injection-moulded plastic sports glasses, metal-plastic combinations, rimless sports glasses and hand-made acetate eyeglasses.

Tracey Chan, marketing assistant, says: "Our sunglasses use CR39 lenses, which are the most popular type. We also have a very large collection of sports glasses in a very wide range of types."

CR39 resin lenses block UVB and therefore offer partial protection in their clear form, while the addition of a UV inhibitor will also block UVA, Chan advises.

Wing Fung's main markets are Europe, the US and South America. "We attend a lot of fairs and exhibitions, and we have good quality and prices," says Chan.

Prices for metal sports glasses start at about US$3.50 a pair and rise to US$15 per pair at the high-end using titanium. "Prices for acetate handmade sports glasses start at US$4 and reach US$6-7 per pair. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Chan notes that photo chromic glasses, also known as polarized glasses, are not in much demand these days as they are too expensive.

Active in spectacles production since 1986, Royal Lenti Co offers sunglasses, reading glasses and general spectacles frames.

Monthly output runs at about 350,000 pairs in assorted styles. Minimum order is 100 dozen pairs per model per colour, and delivery is 30-45 days from confirmation of order.

"We use cellulose propionate (CP), imported from the US, and also TR90. These are the most suitable materials for our range of sports glasses," says director Terry Liu. "We have more than 400 designs and we bring out new models every year, particularly for shows," he adds.

"We use flash mirror coating on some models, which involves a clear lens with coating that provides a one-way mirror effect. We mainly import these and other lenses from Italy and Taiwan," Liu says.

FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$0.80 for budget models to US$2 at the higher-end. "Our customers often provide the design and we make accordingly," says Liu. Main markets are the US, Japan and countries in Europe.

Liu says that the company also accepts orders for metal spectacles but only on a trading basis to help customers source what they need.

Royal Lenti's factory in Shiwan on the Chinese mainland employs a workforce of 260.
