Ringing The Chimes

Rising Precision Int'l Ltd makes a huge range of alarm clocks including a thermo-calendar model with large display (top right) for easy reading

Gone are the days when alarm clocks were made by a handful of companies and merely told the time with unerring accuracy while also waking you up. Now, Hong Kong-made alarm clocks on shelves worldwide are invariably multiple-use products.

Tapping into this booming global market is Arrow Timepiece Ltd. The 12-year-old company's specialty is alarm carriage clocks, based on the earliest types of travelling clocks made in Europe, particularly France, in the 19th and early part of the 20th century.

"While few people today would take a carriage clock on a journey, the modern versions come with brass cases and handles, which is how the originals derived the name," says manager Lydia Lee.

Lee says that while Arrow's carriage clocks sell worldwide, even today they remain most popular with European clients. "Our clocks come with solid brass casings and usually sell under the Jens Olsen brand name. We find increasing acceptance for them worldwide."

Carriage clocks are steadily becoming more popular in Asian countries too, especially Japan. "In 2004, we hope to sell more of these clocks to customers in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries," says Lee.

Arrow recently launched two new carriage clocks. "Models 200-10/3ALM and 300-30/2ALM are solid brass quartz analogue carriage clocks with alarm functions. The design is based on customer feedback, which suggests that the simple but elegant designs holds special appeal," Lee says.

These two models utilise movements sourced from Japan, while some of the other components come from the Chinese mainland where Arrow has a 15,000-square-foot factory. "Our plant employs about 150 highly specialised workers, producing about 50,000 clocks a month," says Lee.

Arrow has a minimum order requirement of 300 pieces per shipment, for delivery 45-50 days after confirmation of order.

An industry veteran of 36 years is Shinfuku Electronics (HK) Ltd, which sells a wide array of alarm clocks with multiple features and in a variety of designs to a growing list of clients.

"We have established an enviable reputation for the quality of our products, the reliability of our service and the appeal of our clocks, which are invariably in tune with market trends," says manager Josephine Chan.

The company has just unveiled its latest batch of models. These include a digital alarm clock with snooze function, LED backlight, calendar, day/date, and temperature or temperature with humidity (model D0206). There is also a dual-purpose desktop or wall digital alarm clock with snooze, LED backlight, calendar, day/date, and temperature or temperature with humidity (model L3502). Also popular is an analogue, sweep alarm clock with snooze function and light (model A0201), while a similar analogue, sweep alarm clock with four-chord polyphonic ring tones, snooze button and light (model A3102) also catches the eye.

"These new models have FOB Hong Kong unit prices of US$5-8, but clients can receive more specific price information upon request," Chan says. "Our new range reflects the increasing demand for digital alarm clocks. In the second half of this year, for example, we expect more demand for LED versions."

Shinfuku Electronics has an ISO 9001-certified production base in mainland Guangzhou where it manufactures about 50,000 units per month. This figure includes the company's range of quartz digital and analogue clocks as well as calculators, all of which are manufactured using plastic and high quality electronic components sourced from a number of reliable suppliers in Japan, Taiwan and the mainland.

The company, which also sells under its Telesonic brand name, markets its products to clients in the US, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. "We have a minimum requirement of 1,000 pieces per model for each shipment, which we undertake to deliver in about 40-60 days," Chan says.

Accuracy is the watchword at Harvest & Associates Ltd, which recently introduced a radio-controlled dual alarm clock (model H-3) to buyers in Europe, the US and Japan. Established in 1988, Harvest puts its success down to some unique clock designs, according to sales manager Suzanna Chan.

"Our radio-controlled clocks have become hot favourites with some of our more discerning clients, especially in Japan and the US. In Germany, too, they are gaining in popularity," says Chan.

"What appeals most to our clients is the fact that these are not mere clocks but models that come with more features and radio-controlled accuracy. Some of them also function as weather stations, and offer other features like a world time clock radio, a CD clock radio and more," she adds.

Harvest, which often markets its specialised alarm clocks under the Vidas brand name, carries out production at a factory in mainland Shenzhen using ABS and electronic components selected from local and overseas sources.

"Based on their specific orders, customers can get a price quote directly from us. We require a minimum order of 3,000 pieces per model and we ensure delivery within 45-60 days of order confirmation," Chan says.

With such a variety of feature-packed products and appealing designs, Hong Kong makers of alarm clocks are ringing in a steady stream of orders from around the world.
