GLITTERING PRIZES(HKTDC Jewellery, Vol 02,1998)
THE seventh Hong Kong Chuk Kam Jewellery Design Competition, held earlier this year, attracted more than 250 entries from which the panel of judges selected 40 design sketches to be made into chuk kam (24K gold) jewellery pieces for final judging.
The competition was organised by the Hong Kong Jewellers' & Goldsmiths' Assn and sponsored by the World Gold Council and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC). Entries were open to designers and students in Hong Kong and Asia.
The objective of the ongoing competition is to stimulate the creativity of Asian chuk kam jewellery designers and raise publicity of Asian designs in the international arena through exhibitions of the winning collections.
The competition is divided into six categories: rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches/pendants, necklaces and sets, and three winning designs are chosen from each category.
The panel of judges this year included: social celebrities Kathy Chiu and Eric Tsang Chi-wai; Stanley Chan, general manager of Larry Jewelry Ltd; Emily Li, Hong Kong/China south manager of the World Gold Council; and Rebecca Wong, assistant chief designer of the TDC.
The 20 winning designs were chosen by the panel of judges under the criteria of practicability, the best use of chuk kam, fashion sense, originality, craftsmanship and beauty.
