Charming & Affordable Accessories

A collection of bead bracelets and a rope necklace in green, brown and pink hues, created by Universal Mfg Co

Fashion jewellery that can be bought on a whim and doesn't cost a fortune are ideal accessories in a sometimes fickle world of fashion where tastes often change overnight. Hong Kong companies keep a close eye on the latest trends when it comes to creating jewellery that is always in tune with the times.

Universal Mfg Co (o/b Megapole Enterprises Ltd) uses plastic, mainly beads, to fashion items that "have the look of genuine jewellery", according to Tammy Lui, manager at the 32-year-old company.

"We can make plastic beads look like pearls, or we can use different kinds of finishes for a metallic, denim or turquoise look," she adds. Stringing is via good quality elastic that provides both flexibility and an easy, slip-on fit. Lui says pieces inspired by current jewellery fashions sell well. "Also popular are cross-style pendants in leather or suede that are decorated with beads," she adds.

The company accepts OEM and private label orders as well as premiums. About 30% of the monthly production comprises items of jewellery, with hair accessories accounting for the balance.

Prices range from US$0.35-1.50 per piece FOB Hong Kong, and Universal exports to the US, Europe, South America and the Middle East. Delivery is 30-45 days after order confirmation, and the company expects a minimum order of 50 dozen pieces for jewellery and 200-300 dozen pieces for hair accessories.

All production takes place at a 10,000-square-foot factory, employing 300-500 workers, in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

Another maker, Neva Ltd, offers a broad spectrum of fashion jewellery, employing genuine and synthetic semiprecious stones or plastic set in sterling silver, brass or alloy.

Established in 1996, the company exports to Europe, the US and Japan. "For the US, we use cubic zirconia which resembles diamonds as we want to achieve an elegant look," says marketing spokesperson Amy Cheung.

Neva manufactures two million items per month at its 70,000-square-foot factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland. Prices range from US$1-15 per piece FOB Hong Kong and the minimum order is 200 pieces. Delivery is 4-6 weeks after order confirmation.

Neva Ltd offers delicate fashion accessories such as a sterling silver necklace with pearls and amethysts (centre) and a butterfly motif ring (front)

"We are always on the lookout for new materials to help enhance the fashion value of our designs. We also examine possibilities in fabrics like threads and cloth, as well as feathers and plastic beads," Cheung adds.

OEM represents the bulk of the business, but own-designs are popular as are private label orders. Customers include mail-order outlets and wholesalers and prospects appear positive for the coming year. "This year, sales are slightly higher than a year ago," she says.

Henry Tsang, managing director at Angelina Fashion Accessories Ltd, says ethnic and antique looks vie for attention amid a plethora of jewellery styles. "There is no single look dominating the market, although ethnic styles are very popular among women in the 35-40 group. Women aged 50 and more still like basic, classic jewellery," he says.

This 21-year-old firm uses silver- or gold-plated iron, brass and alloy complemented by coloured glass, plastic beads and a wide range of other materials.

Exports go to wholesalers and department stores in markets from Europe and the US and from Australia to the Middle East. "Europe is our major market with 80% of sales, but we are hoping to develop the US more," says Tsang.

Premiums account for more than half of the company's current business, he adds, and OEM and private label customers are accepted. Manufacturing, subcontracted to factories on the mainland, reaches up to one million items per month.

Prices range from US$0.10-5.00 per piece FOB Hong Kong, and the minimum order is 30 dozen per item per colour for delivery six weeks after order confirmation.

At 13-year-old Mee Ngai Wah (HK) Ltd, sterling silver jewellery set with semiprecious stones represents the bulk of sales. The company turns out 200kg of sterling silver jewellery per month at its factory in Shunde on the mainland.

"The majority of our products are sterling silver, but we also use a base metal such as alloy," says marketing officer Irene Fung. "We plate the metal in whatever colours the customer wants."

Prices range from US$0.50-20.00 per piece ex-works. "We are very competitive," she claims.

A strong seller is the antique-look, while decorative sterling silver pieces strung on leather cords form another upcoming trend.

The company normally produces to customer specifications only, and exports to the US, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. "We also handle a few orders for customers in Nigeria and India," Fung says.

The minimum order requirement varies depending on the quantity and the style, with delivery time 3-4 weeks after order confirmation.
