Bright Prospects As Fair Numbers Surge(HKTDC Jewellery, Vol 01,2006)

Getting ready to outshine its predecessors, the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2006 is set to sparkle at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from March 6-9, 2006.

Asia's fastest-growing jewellery show is shaping up to be a real gem this year, according to Anne Chick, senior exhibitions manager of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), the event organiser. "Last year's show attracted a record 26,753 buyers, up 7% from the previous year, who came from 124 countries and regions," says Chick.

Buyers from outside Hong Kong rose 18% from the previous year to 14,484 and included representatives from 10 leading countries and regions, including the Chinese mainland, the US, Taiwan, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Korea, Australia, India and Italy.

Chick maintains buyers will have even more reasons to visit this year's fair, noting that the event has already exceeded the 1,547 exhibitors from 40 countries and regions who attended the 2005 show - a figure which was 12% up on the previous year.

"The 2006 fair will have more than 1,800 exhibitors, including group pavilions from Belgium, the Chinese mainland, Dubai, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the US," she explains.

There will also be pavilions hosted by the International Colored Gemstone Association, Japan Jewellery Association and the Japan Jewellery Designers' Association and Platinum Guild International.

Together with local jewellers and dealers they will showcase a huge and gleaming array of exhibits ranging from loose gemstones, diamonds, and pearls to fine jewellery and watches.

"The overwhelming demand has resulted in the 2006 jewellery show spilling over to a new exhibition area in Hall 7, providing space for 300 more exhibitors," Chick notes. "In addition, product zones have been mapped out to ensure buyers see as much of the exhibits as possible during the four-day show."

Visitors will be entranced by the host of glittering attractions at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2006, which this year will include a new Treasures of Nature section dedicated to displaying precious and loose diamonds, precious stones and pearls of exceptional quality. "It will feature around 30 exhibitors and is sure to be a major drawcard," Chick claims.

Other favourites to return this year include Les Salons Privˆms, introduced in 2005 as a private showroom to offer extra privacy and convenience for exhibitors to meet with buyers. "This section, ideally located in the meeting rooms next to Hall 1, will feature fine jewellery exhibitors," Chick explains.

Many buyers will also want to head for Le Salon Extraordinaire, a sparkling showcase launched in 2004 dedicated to catering for companies specialising in luxurious, top-range jewellery. "The salon has been well-received by traders and will more than double in size to include around 40 exhibitors this year," Chick says.

She adds that the Designer Jewellery Galleria feature is also growing in popularity as an ideal setting for both rising stars and established designers to display their distinctive creations in an elegant environment.

"Located in the Hall 1 Concourse, this section will house over 50 companies in a unique and elegant setting," Chick explains.

Another popular venue is the Watch and Clock Pavilion, which will make its fourth appearance at the fair offering a unique opportunity for buyers who are also on the lookout for watches. "Last year's pavilion claimed a record 52 exhibitors and we expect to have more this year," she predicts.

Other events lined up to dazzle buyers include the 7th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition and Display, a Chuk Kam Jewellery Design Competition and Display for 24K items and parades of designer jewellery, luxurious jewellery and watches.

"There will also be informative seminars on industry trends and market development as well as a Paspaley Pearl Auction and a Robert Wan Tahiti Perles Auction," Chick adds.

The array of attractions at the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show illustrates the tremendous span of the Hong Kong jewellery industry, which exported US$2.58bn worth of jewellery worldwide in 2004.

Sales in the first 10 months of 2005 rose 24% to US$2.53bn with major markets - including the US, the EU (particularly the UK, Germany and France), Japan, ASEAN, Taiwan and the Chinese mainland - all recording double-digit growth.

"The Hong Kong jewellery industry is internationally recognised as a world leader and the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2006 is certain to reflect our prestigious position," Chick concludes.

Going For Gold Again At Asia's Leading Fair

Enthusiasm is enormous for the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2006 - especially given the highly positive response to last year's event by exhibitors and buyers alike.

The Dubai Pavilion made its debut at the 2005 show. "We have chosen to come here because you can meet the world in Hong Kong," said K.P. Baiju, general manager of the Dubai Gold & Jewellery Group. "The show is very well-organised and it is growth-oriented."

His views were echoed by Anthony Tan, chairman of the Singapore Jewellers Association export committee which hosted some 15 Singapore companies at the Singapore Pavilion.

"Here we see a lot of buyers from Japan and Korea, and increasingly from the Chinese mainland - which is one of our big growth markets," Tan observed. "This show is one of the most significant jewellery trade fairs in the world, and this is why we are here."

Buyers such as Nobuhiro Imanishi, president of Imayo & Co Ltd, Japan, were equally enthusiastic. "I have been coming to the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show on and off since the fair first started," Imanishi explained, adding that the show is a "great event" as it attracts so many people from all over the world. "There's always plenty of variety and plenty of choice."

Dr Jûzsef Takács, managing director of Victoria Gem Oktatas & Piacszervezo Kft of Hungary, said his firm had long been planning to come to the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show.

"We came just to see what was being offered and we are very impressed with the different products we have found, different to anything we have seen at the European fairs," Dr Takˆhcs said. "The fair is very well-organised and possibly the most attractive we have ever seen with its famous harbour setting."

With an unbeatable location, thousands of traders, and the perfect environment for making new contacts and strengthening old, the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show 2006 is the highlight of the jewellery industry's calendar.
