Perfection In The Bag

Fashion Handbags

EVERY woman knows any outfit is incomplete without a handbag in the latest style. Hong Kong's skilled handbag designers and producers realize this means an ongoing demand for everything from the most elegant, classic shoulder bags to the funkiest clutch bags.

Wah Ngai Co has designed and manufactured ladies' evening bags since 1984. Anticipating next season, the company is excited about its new range of gold and mixed-metallic-coloured bags, expected to make a splash in the US and Europe.

"This range is really fun," says Wah Ngai manager Mandy Kwok. "Each style is fresh and lively, fashionable and funky. I think each style will prove very popular."

The range makes extensive use of plain shimmer satin decorated sparingly with contrasting or gold-coloured rosettes and tassels. Kwok says the Wah Ngai design team in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland carefully keeps pace with the latest designs and trends, while maintaining an updated range of classics, such as simple black, satin evening bags.

"We also manufacture on an OEM basis and are happy to put together samples based on customers' sketches or instructions," Kwok adds.

The company works with various fabrics and materials, including satin, velvet, tissue faille, brocade and nylon, all imported from South Korea, Taiwan or the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is 1,200 pieces (200 per colour/style), and delivery takes 50-60 days after order confirmation.

Universal Handbag Fty Ltd produces an extensive range of PVC and nylon fashion handbags. During the past two decades, the company has made brand-name ranges for some major European and North American high-street fashion chains.

"Over the years, we have maintained excellent relationships with a number of high-profile brand names. We believe this is due to our company's ability to produce exciting, mid-range designs at competitive prices," says Universal supervisor Gloria Ip.

This season, the price range for Universal's fashion handbags is US$1.50-4 FOB Hong Kong. The company's monthly production capacity is 80,000-100,000, and the minimum order is 300 pieces per style/colour.

"Looking ahead to next season, it is difficult to say what designs or colours will sell best, but I think camel tones will remain successful, as will patent finishes," Ip says.

According to L.I.N.E. Creation Ltd director Sidney Ngan: "Most of our handbags and purses are manufactured on an OEM basis. We take pride in our ability to work quickly and efficiently to match customers' sketch designs, and to match fabrics and materials effectively."

Sample production takes about two weeks, depending on raw materials. Minimum order is 500 pieces per style/colour, and delivery takes 60-75 days after order confirmation.

"Most of our handbags and purses are made from real leather imported from Italy, although we can manufacture in synthetic leather, if a customer wishes," Ngan says.

Most L.I.N.E. Creation customers are in Europe, with 80% based in Italy. In Europe, specialist textured leathers, such as ostrich, snake and crocodile, are likely to be in demand again next year.

"We do our utmost to ensure all our European buyers receive our very best attention at all times. Over the years we have built excellent relationships with major customers. Our intention is to maintain that level of quality," says Ngan.

Koji Bags & Accessories (HK) Ltd has produced fashion handbags since 1987. Director Chow Pak Hou says the company's brand is one of the most famous in Hong Kong, where its bags sell at most department stores.

Koji's range includes leather, PVC, nylon and PU bags made with raw materials imported from South Korea and Taiwan. The price range is US$8-36 FOB Hong Kong.

"We have more than 30 styles at any one time," says Chow, who adds that most products are designed by the company's own design team, although Koji can also accommodate OEM business.

"For 10 years we have produced trendy, fashionable handbags for customers in Southeast Asia. Now we are looking for an agent to extend our scope to other areas of the globe," Chow says.

Koji produces 8,000 bags per month. The company requires no minimum order, and delivery throughout Asia takes about 30 days.

Easing Book Burdens

School Bags

DESIGNERS of children's school bags always must consider two critical factors: attractiveness and comfort. Hong Kong manufacturers are powerless to regulate how much homework young students face, but they do strive to make shouldering book burdens as easy as possible.

Many new school bags feature padded straps and backs. As an alternative, several companies have introduced trolley bags. But with children themselves often at the forefront in buying decisions, colourful appearance and design, plus inclusion of a variety of pockets, are also important.

"For our bags, the major selling points are unparalleled quality and value for money," says Tiger Enterprise Corpn representative Philip Chan.

"Our products are designed exclusively for us by reputable designers from all over the world. We can also manufacture to the request and specifications of our customers." Tiger's production facilities carry ISO 9002 certification.

"We have a number of unique features to set us apart from competitors," says Chan. "For example, we offer built-in raincoat hoods on our bags and trolley bags with extendable handles."

Established in 1972, Tiger Enterprise also produces other items, such as colouring sets and pencil cases, for school-age consumers to display coordinated looks.

The company's bags are made from various materials, including nylon, polyester, PVC, leather, jute and soft fleece.

"Most colours are available at the request of customers, but the most common choices are green, blue, black, orange, yellow, red and purple," says Chan. The current styles feature motifs of puppies, hippos, racing cars and trendy tartan.

Dimensions and capacity vary from 44x14x32cm for shoulder bags to 42x22x37cm for large rucksacks and 50x21x35cm for trolley bags. Prices range from US$4.97-12.83 FOB Hong Kong. Delivery time is about 30 days, and minimum order value is US$5,000.

Good-Win Bags Fty Ltd offers rucksacks, shoulder bags and trolley bags in about 100 designs for school children. "They are mainly made of nylon, which is stronger than PVC," says Good-Win marketing manager Iris Wong.

"We have our own in-house designer. The front designs can vary in colour, number of partitions, printing and so on while we ensure the backs of our bags are comfortable for kids to wear ?with cushioning, for example."

New ranges are introduced every year. Some of Good-Win's overseas customers carry licensing agreements from Disney, Warner Brothers and others, allowing cartoon characters to appear on the bags.

Good-Win's major market is Europe. "Some countries have preferences," says Wong. For example, Italy likes expandable bags, while Germany prefers the so-called "container" model with a more rigid appearance.

Prices range from US$2 for a 70D nylon rucksack and US$2.31 for a 210D teenager's nylon shoulder bag to US$5.48 for a 600D teenager's nylon school bag and US$7.53 for a 250D polyester container school bag (all prices are FOB Hong Kong). Minimum order for Good-Win bags is 1,000 pieces, while delivery time is 30-60 days.

Action Bags & Luggage Mfy sales manager Alan Chung highlights special features, plus competitive prices. "Our bags have extra pockets. Some come with hats or drink bottles. They also have heavy-duty pads to make them more comfortable to carry, and different colour combinations are available," he says.

Action bags, mostly backpacks, are made from 600D polyester. "We have more than 200 styles, and each year we introduce 20-30 new designs," says Chung.

The company's major markets are the US and Europe. "The two continents are very close [in style preference], but the American market has few designs. All the bags look the same, so we can only improve on colour combinations and change the pockets."

Action prices range from US$1.10 for a basic style to US$1.50 for a model with a hat, US$1.80 for a bag with a bottle and up to US$2.50. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, and delivery requires 30 days.

Keen Town Ltd has made bags, including school bags, since 1986. "We produce mass quantities in our factory, and production is vertically integrated up to silk-screen or embroidery processes. That means we can offer very competitive prices," says Keen Town director Honson Cheng.

The company has 50-70 styles, mainly backpacks with a smaller number of shoulder bags, featuring a variety of configurations in shape, pockets and colours. "The curved backs of the bags are made to fit children comfortably," says Cheng.

All the bags are made from nylon. Some styles feature one colour and may appeal to teenagers. Multi-coloured bags and others featuring cartoon characters are for younger children.

Keen Town sells mainly to Europe and Japan. The Japanese go for top quality and are prepared to pay higher prices, while Europe is more concerned about competitive prices.

"At the moment, we are trying to increase the number of designs, rather than concentrate on new markets," Cheng says.

Most Keen Town bags go to importers and chain stores. Prices range from US$1.55-2.40 per piece FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, and delivery time is 25 days.

On-The-Move Gear

Travelling Accessories

FUNCTIONAL designs and high-quality materials characterize the versatile array of travel bags and accessories offered by Hong Kong companies.

"We manufacture a full range of wallets, handbags, document cases and travel bags for our markets in the US and Europe," says Mayfair Far East Corp Ltd assistant marketing manager Desmond Tong.

"Two-thirds of our merchandise is created from in-house designs manufactured under our Bella Mondini brand, while OEM orders account for the remainder."

New designs include a range of travel bags, made from super-soft, microfibre grain PVC imported from South Korea, available in black, red and greyish-green. Model 9901A/1, a sophisticated teen-bag, costs US$4.30; compared to US$5.10 for model 9903A/1, a zip-around novelty bag; US$4.60 for model 9905A/1, a mini fun-bag; and US$4.35 for model 9312D/1, a travel kit. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

"This series comes in different handy sizes, and the products are functional with many inside compartments. The outer is kept simple to give a casual and light feeling, with the fabric slightly quilted to complement the understated appeal," Tong says.

Mayfair began in 1974. Its average monthly production of 200,000 wallets and 40,000 handbags, document cases and agenda kits comes from a 900-worker, 6,500-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. Minimum order is 500-1,000 pieces per model, with 75 days for delivery.

Twenty-year-old Dat Sun Trading Co sells its extensive range of bags, made from leather, PVC, nylon and PU, to markets in the US, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

"For our travel-bag collection, we present three seasons a year to buyers. Combining different materials and design details, we offer 20-30 styles for each season," says Dat Sun marketing manager Steven Hui.

The company's latest range of ladies' travel bags, under its own Solution label, is slim and classic. "This collection is geared to travellers' practical needs, with functional compartments for cheque-books, sunglasses, boarding passes, passports and notes in different currencies," explains Hui.

The bags, made from glossy PVC imported from South Korea, are available in dark brown, grey and black. Models 11192, 10578 and 11191 each cost US$3.60-4.30 FOB Hong Kong, depending on the composition of inside compartments.

Dat Sun employs 800 workers at two well-equipped factories in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, each more than 10,000 square metres. The company can manufacture up to 170,000 bags per month.

Grand Bag Centre Co Ltd, established in 1981, specializes in travel bags, backpacks and sports bags made from nylon, cotton canvas, PVC koskin and other fabrics. Besides taking OEM orders, the company also carries its own Surprise and RV Sportage brands, selling successfully to Europe, South America and the Middle East.

"The prevailing style for travel bags is clean and uncomplicated. Therefore, we focus on using new materials as our selling point," says Grand Bag manager Mimi Chung.

Among the new materials is 400D cordura imported from Taiwan, providing a soft and comfortable feel. The travel bags, available in army shades of navy, brown and beige, are jazzed up with neon-yellow zipper-pulls and embroidered logos.

Model GC-6534 and GC-4247CL waistbags cost US$1.92 and US$1.54 respectively, while shoulder bag GC-6535 is US$2.21 and multi-purpose bag GC-6536 is US$3.30. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.

High quality is the prime concern for 10-year-old Bagscene Ltd, a maker of travel bags and accessories for customers in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

"For fabrics, we prefer using nylon and polyester from Taiwan that has better ability to stretch and endure. We manufacture quality products in Dongguan at our 350-worker, 6,000-square-metre factory, featuring advanced facilities, to meet the requirements of major international buyers," says Bagscene manager Raymond Pang.

Bagscene's new collections include two stylish belt-bags made from black polyester and grey mesh trims, with snug pockets to hold drinking bottles. Model B1443 costs US$2.10, while B1444 is US$2.40. Model 1408, a sleek casual bag typical of the company's designs, costs US$2.20 and is available in yellow, turquoise, grey, beige, burgundy or deep green. Again, all prices are FOB Hong Kong.
