Outdoor Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 04,2005)
Whatever the requirement, there is almost certainly a Hong Kong company making a stylish, quality bag that will meet it - and at a competitive price.
Buyers looking for durable products should check out Action Handbag Co Ltd, which produces outdoor bags built to last using a variety of materials such as nylon, polyester, ripstop, canvas and denim.
"We've been in business since 1989, and do OEM and ODM work," explains export manager Jane Leung. "We export mostly to Europe, particularly Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland."
Sourcing materials mostly from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan, Action's mainland factory in Shenzhen employs around 1,000 workers who are capable of producing 300,000-400,000 bags per month.
An extensive selection of sports bags and backpacks, designed in-house, forms the backbone of the company’s outdoor range. “We pride ourselves on our versatility and are able to construct bags to customer specifications,” Leung adds.
The 16-year-old company accepts minimum orders of 500 bags per style, usually delivered within 50 days of order confirmation, at FOB prices dependent on the size of the order and the cost of the materials. "We are experienced in turning customers' ideas from sketches into real products, and samples can normally be made in two weeks," adds Leung.
Miu Sum Trading Co Ltd also focuses on the European market, but also has a growing business supplying Japanese and South American buyers, according to manager Renee Lee. "Customer designs and specifications are welcome," she adds.
Lee says the 12-year-old company can produce about 180,000 bags per month in a wide range of materials, including PVC, PU, nylon, polyester and canvas. “We source our materials mostly from the mainland and Taiwan,” she says.
They are processed at an 8,300-square-metre mainland factory that employs 400 workers who produce 1,000-unit minimum order quantities for delivery 30-60 days after order confirmation.
Equally versed in the art of manufacturing rugged sports bags and backpacks, made from nylon, polyester and PVC sourced from the mainland, Taiwan and Korea, is Asialuck Co Ltd.
The 22-year-old firm operates a 5,000-square-metre, 350-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland that produces 150,000 travel bags, sports bags, backpacks and document bags a month.
"We export mostly to Europe and North America, and can deliver minimum orders of 1,000 bags within 30 days of approval of a preproduction sample," director Christina So says.
Outdoor bags can also be a powerful promotional medium, as H.Y. Designs & Promotional Ltd knows full well as a specialist in offset printing on fabric.
Known equally as well for its caps and umbrellas, the 21-year-old company enjoys particular success with a range of cooler bags and backpacks equipped with inbuilt radios to supply music on the move.
"Our main markets are Europe, Canada, the US and Australia, and the radio bags are one of our best-selling products," says sales manager Karen Ching.
H.Y. owns a factory in mainland Guangdong Province that employs 350 workers, produces about 60,000 bags per month and delivers orders 25-40 days after order confirmation.
FOB Hong Kong unit prices for 500-piece minimum orders range from US$6.80 for a basic radio cooler bag to US$8.95 for a model with PVC backing, while radio backpacks are priced at US$8.70.
However, while H.Y.'s radio bags are uncompromisingly modern, Super Art Industries (HK) Ltd managing director Bruce Fung believes there is also room for tradition in the outdoor bags business.
"We specialise in crochet or "straw" bags made mostly from environmentally-friendly materials such as paper and corn husk sourced from the mainland," he explains. "Our range includes corn husk braided tote bags, travelling bags and mini ladies' bags."
Super Art's two mainland factories in Zhejiang Province, which together employ 800 workers and produce around 100,000 bags per month, have few direct competitors. "Straw bags are complicated to produce, and both hand- and machine-weaving techniques are used in the manufacturing process," Fung adds.
Although Super Art is happy to manufacture to customer specifications, it has a strong design team and is best known for the quality of its ODM work.
Fung says FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$2-4 and orders can usually be delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation. "Our major markets are Europe and the US, where there is an appreciation of environmentally-friendly materials," he adds.
However, he maintains there is a demand for straw bags anywhere that has a hot summer. "We are currently working to expand our business in Germany," Fung discloses, "and plan to establish a website in the near future to help market our bags."
Whatever the choice, one thing is certain - no trip to the great outdoors is complete without a rugged, fashionable and reasonably priced outdoor bag from Hong Kong.
