The Final Touch
Elegant brass evening bags from Polly Mfg Co are well-received in the US and European markets
Whether preparing for a cocktail party, a formal dinner or a grand ball, every woman knows the bag she carries must be as beautiful as her dress. She also knows that Hong Kong has long had a reputation for producing high quality, competitively priced and extremely stylish evening bags that lend glamour to any ensemble.
Take, for example, the glamorous evening bags made by Polly Mfg Co of moulded brass, covered with gold plate. "Our gold-plated evening bags are like jewels that adorn an outfit," claims manager Howard To, "thanks to a team of designers on the Chinese mainland who follow the latest trends."
Customers' own designs are also thoughtfully carried out, To adds, and can be agreed by consultation between the company's executives and customers. "There is no minimum order requirement, and we will accept orders for very small quantities," To says.
Polly's factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland employs 180 skilled workers, who produce 18,000 bags a month for such major markets as the US, the Middle East and Europe.
FOB Chinese mainland prices range from US$12-16 per bag for delivery within 45 days. "Our evening bags often become heirlooms that are passed from one generation to another," To believes.
Similarly, the beaded and embroidered evening bags produced by Wintarget Enterprises Co Ltd are often passed from mother to daughter, according to the company's general manager for Asia, Idy Chu.
"Satin and organdy from the Chinese mainland, Korea and Taiwan form the base of the bags, which are richly beaded and embroidered, some with fringes and appliqu?s," explains Chu.
"We have many innovative designs, which are created by our in-house designers and sold under our own Anne F brand name and also under customers' names."
Wintarget, which was established in 1991 specifically to manufacture beaded evening bags, has a factory in Chaozhou on the mainland that covers 1,000 square metres, employs 100 workers and produces 5,000 bags a month.
These are available in minimum quantities of 200 pieces in any one style for FOB Hong Kong prices ranging from US$8-30 per bag, with delivery promised 30-45 days after order confirmation. "Our main markets are Japan and Europe, but Japan is the best," adds Chu. "I think Japanese people appreciate the fine quality of our bags."
Also enjoying a reputation for fine quality are the evening bags made by Wah Ngai Co. "Luxury fabrics are used in our bags, including shimmer satin, tissue faille, velvet, brocade and organza," explains spokeswoman Safan Hor. "These are especially imported from Taiwan, Korea and the Chinese mainland."
Hor says new ideas for evening bags are developed every month, and Wah Ngai's designers produce new portfolios regularly. "We follow international trends," she claims. "We also carry out our customers' ideas and listen carefully to their requests."
The 20-year-old company's 18,000-square-metre factory in Shantou City, Guangdong Province, employs 500 workers, but Hor adds that the firm also uses subcontractors who contract out the embroidery and beading to skilled craftswomen.
Wah Ngai's products are available in minimum order values of US$7,000 and minimum quantities of 200 bags in any one colour and style, at prices that range from FOB Hong Kong US$1-10. Delivery is promised 45-60 days after order confirmation.
"Our best markets are the US and Europe," Hor reveals. "The US takes the largest quantity but orders the lower priced bags, while customers in Europe are more discerning and order a smaller quantity of the most expensive bags."
Another company that prides itself on meticulously executing customers' ideas is Wise Lead Int'l Handbag Ltd. "We seriously consider the customers' requirements at every stage of production," claims manager Anna Wong.
"Sixty percent of our production is made for our customers, who include Missoni, Gianfranco Ferre, Benetton and BCBG, and 40% is under our own brand name, Milami."
Established in 1980, the company has a joint venture factory in Guangdong Province that covers 37,000 square feet and houses a workforce of more than 800. "We also use a couple of thousand part-time workers to do the beading work in peak seasons," adds Wong.
Production reaches nearly two million pieces a year, including evening bags, handbags, cosmetic bags and backpacks, with minimum orders of 150 pieces in any style or colour delivered within 45 days of confirmation.
"We export to 60 countries altogether," says Wong, adding that the style of evening bags does not change much. "Some classic styles go on from season to season and the clutch bag is always a winner."
Illustrating yet again that when it comes to making exotic evening bags for enchanted evenings, Hong Kong manufacturers wield a particular magic all their own.
