Executive Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 01,2007)
|Ladies' handbags are a specialty of Hunters Leatherwares Ltd, which produces this Fion-branded executive collection|
Stylish handbags and other accessories for carrying office paraphernalia and money are everyday items that every well-dressed worker needs, as Hong Kong companies well know.
For example, Hunters Leatherwares Ltd appreciates that fine workmanship is a major selling point in its range of medium- to high-end ladies' handbags, wallets and small leather goods.
"Our designs are aimed at trendy office ladies," explains business development manager Erica Lau. "About 60% are classic styles and the rest are very fashionable designs."
In business since 1979, the company has steadily developed its own Fion brand, which is carried on 80% of the 25,000-plus pieces manufactured per month at its factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. "OEM/ODM orders constitute the remainder," Lau advises.
Besides traditional exports, Hunters Leatherwares supplies retailers with a complete merchandising, brand imaging and advertising business model. "We sell the whole concept of our Fion brand," Lau notes, "and work closely with retailers to analyse their market."
About half of the company's goods are produced from leather imported from Italy, with nylon from Japan and Korea and PU and PVC from Italy accounting for the rest.
A typical medium-sized leather shoulder bag sells for US$28-35 FOB Hong Kong per unit, while a similar bag made of PU and trimmed with leather is priced from US$22-28.
Hunters Leatherwares exports to Japan, the mainland, other Asian countries, Switzerland, Germany and the UK. "Our minimum order requirement is 30 pieces per style per colour and deliveries are 30-45 days after order confirmation," Lau adds.
Nylon is also a key material in Lee Tat Handbags Mfy's smart-looking nylon bags with shoulder straps that are essential for carrying everything from computers to office supplies. "Nylon bags priced from US$4-10 FOB Hong Kong per item are one of our best sellers," notes director Pedro Keung.
The bags have 6-7 inside compartments and 2-3 zippered outer pockets and come in a choice of black, navy blue, grey and brown colours. "They can carry 3kg-5kg - enough for a notebook computer and other items," Keung explains.
The ISO 9001-certified company produces more than 300,000 bags per month at its mainland factory in Dongguan, many of which bear Lee Tat's own DX2 brand.
"Our major export markets include the EU, the US, Japan and South America," Keung says. "Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, with delivery 25 days after order confirmation."
Leather is the preferred material for Hillway Corp Ltd, which turned to manufacturing a full range of handbags, wallets, briefcases and backpacks several years ago after more than two decades as a trading company. "Ninety-five per cent of our products are leather," says operation manager Sonny Yip. "We pay special attention to a balance between styling and functionality in our products."
Hillway Corp chooses leather hides from Italy, Argentina and the US for their quality, strength and character and uses them in a wide variety of executive-oriented items.
Half of the 45,000 products the company produces each month at its mainland factory in Guangzhou are wallets, billfolds and money clips, 20% are briefcases, 20% ladies' handbags and 10% miscellaneous items.
A stylish ladies' leather tote costs US$45-60 for a negotiable minimum order. "We deliver to the US, the UK and Italy 30-45 days after order confirmation," Yip says.
Ladies' briefcases, handbags and totes are also a speciality of Tai Hing (Mok's) Bags Mfy Ltd, which has been producing high-quality brand name and licensed novelty bags for more than 40 years.
The OEM firm uses materials such as polyester, nylon, genuine leather, split leather, cotton and canvas in its products, which include ladies' handbags and totes and men's leather briefcases. "But we hope to move more in the direction of leather to make more up-market products," adds marketing manager Jeanette Mok.
Elegant ladies' leather handbags that cost US$15-30 FOB Hong Kong per piece and stylish men's leather briefcases that sell for US$35-45 are among Tai Hing's major product categories.
"Women's clutches, shoulder bags and totes are popular, while men's items feature more patterning, stitching and embossing," Mok adds, noting that the minimum order is around 300 pieces per colour per style.
Tai Hing manufactures 60,000 dozen bags per month at its two mainland factories in Dongguan and Shenzhen, which produce both sewn and high-frequency heat-sealed items and are both equipped with their own in-house film development and silk-screen printing facilities.
"All customers are assigned a service team that keeps track of orders from start to finish, allowing easy access to all order and shipment information," Mok notes.
Delivery time takes a minimum of 65 days after order confirmation. "Our exports are targeted at the US, Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan and Korea," Mok says.
Buyers seeking the finest management materials should obviously seek out Hong Kong leather goods manufacturers, who offer the widest range of quality products at the most competitive prices.
