Fook Tin Technologies Ltd achieved ISO 13485 certification for its medical devices quality management system in 2005 - a feat that sales and marketing director Holly Au declares the greatest accolade the company has received and one that further cements its reputation as an international manufacturer of integrity.

"We have long held ISO 9001-, 14001- and 18001-certification," says Au, "but, with all due modesty, I believe we may be the only company in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland to hold all four of these prestigious certificates at one time."

Au says Fook Tin gained its latest and hardest-to-get ISO certificate after transforming the production process at its factory in Shenzhen on the mainland to manufacture the latest in medical and health care devices.

"We set up 100K-Class Clean Rooms for medical grade production and also 1K- and 10K-Class Clean Rooms for gauge bonding, where skilled workers must wear especially-made clothing and footwear and complete a rigorous check against the presence of dust before entering the clean environment," says Au.

Fook Tin has also incorporated a large number of equally-strict production procedures so that what was once the production line on the factory floor now operates in near-clinical conditions of super cleanliness more befitting a laboratory.

With such strict processes in force, it follows that the company also employs the highest quality control procedures. "QC checks aren't confined to the production line," Au says, "and purchasing and marketing staff are also brought in for quality checking to confirm standards exceed the requirements of global buyers."

Au says that people from all walks of life throughout Europe, the Americas and Asia are increasingly monitoring their personal health and that of family members. "Many of them use our products to carry out health monitoring," she claims. "They often start in the bathroom, using our weight scale that incorporates a series of sophisticated electronic add-ons to provide additional health information."

Au says the firm's products can provide the user with heath-related data, based on the result of a body fat reading calculated on the user's weight, age, sex, height and the level of daily exercise.

"Our latest model, FTA Optima, is a partner for consumers to monitor and manage a healthy body composition," she explains. "By adopting the Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis technology, this unit provides a comprehensive analysis of the user's body weight, total body fat percentage, total body water percentage, skeletal muscle mass and bone mineral mass - all data that is essential for planning a healthy lifestyle."

She adds that FTA Optima also provides users with additional valuable information such as optimal body weight, optimal body fat percentage, and the daily calorie requirements needed to maintain the optimal body fat percentage.

"The remote control unit makes it easy to keep track of the various read-outs as different data is produced," she adds.

Besides health-monitoring equipment, Fook Tin also specialises in the design and manufacture of state-of-the-art electronic products including all types of scales (medical, bathroom, kitchen, utility and postal). "We are arguably the biggest player in this field with about 26% of the global market," says Au.

This is a truly remarkable achievement for an enterprise that produced plastic toys, flowers, fruits and plants when it began business 42 years ago, only switching to scales in 1975, and upgrading into health-monitoring devices in the late 1990s.

"Annual production is now running at seven million pieces, servicing 500 major clients in more than 80 countries," says Au.

"Demand is so consistently high that we recently completed a second factory building in Shenzhen, taking our total floor area to 600,000 square feet and the number of employees to 2,300."

There are an additional 300 people in specialist positions, including 80 skilled engineers and designers in the R&D section.

Fook Tin clearly has a hearty business attitude that is also generating healthy sales.
