Many consumers in this image-conscious age now consider former indulgences or luxuries as everyday necessities, making health and bodycare products an interesting and growing industry segment. In response, Hong Kong companies are offering a broad range of attractive and useful products.
For example, Alice and Law Co Ltd, a pioneer in toiletry and laundry products, is a high-volume producer of a wide range of body washes, bath confetti, bath jelly, soap flowers, soap substitutes and body lotions.
Shapes, fragrances and the packaging of most items can be customised upon request or under the firm's Slimate or Code Wash brands. "Some markets, such as Japan, demand special packaging arrangements or baskets," says manager Betty Chan.
"Our quality is high and the finish of our products is better. We use both imported and mainland-sourced materials, and we incorporate them into our own original flower designs to make them look realistic," she adds.
FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$0.25 for a small package of bath confetti to US$2.50 for a larger gift set of soap flowers. Buyers can also choose from 40-50 floral and fruit scents, as well as virtually any colour.
The nine-year-old GMP- and ISO 9001-certified firm employs about 2,000 workers at its 2,500-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. Production capacity is 2-3 million items per month, destined mainly for the US, Europe, Japan and other Asian countries. Minimum order value is US$5,000 per shipment, for delivery 45-60 days after order confirmation.
Fitness fans can now keep track of how much they walk or jog, as seven-year-old consumer electronics manufacturer Ego Pacific Ltd offers a pedometer with compass (PD-9185).
This patented unit, exclusive to the US market, is sold under the firm's Ego Pacific brand, costs less than US$1 each FOB Hong Kong, and will indicate the distance walked and the calories expended.
Apart from the compass, the PD-9185 also boasts a step counter with individual weight and stride adjustment settings, a stopwatch and a lap timer. A single button cell provides the power.
"This is a user-friendly device and the compass makes it handy for hiking," says marketing manager Margaret Chan, noting that besides 6-7 other pedometer models, the production range includes calculators, radios, clocks and USB items.
Production takes place at the firm's factory in Dongguan on the mainland, and reaches more than 100,000 items per month. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces, for delivery 25-30 days after order confirmation to major markets in the US and Europe. "We are also interested in penetrating Eastern Europe," Chan adds.
Meanwhile, a new space-saving mini humidifier and aroma diffuser from Handiwares Co Ltd, measuring 13x10x15cm, provides much-needed moisture in dry-air conditions.
"The aroma diffuser model 602 is just for personal use," explains director Steven Shair. "Users can simply place it beside a desk or next to them before going to sleep."
With an attractive and streamlined design, the unit comes in blue, pink or green pastels or transparent hues and can be used in conjunction with aromatic oils.
"The FOB Hong Kong unit price is about US$4.70," says Shair. "It can run for four days using 250ml of water. Without water, it will continue to operate as a fan. We have CE approval for France, and we are in the process of obtaining certification for other countries."
Handiwares, which also makes brushes, massagers and dehumidifiers, produces about 50,000 mini humidifiers per month at its factory in Huizhou on the mainland. Minimum order is 1,000 units for delivery 45 days after order confirmation. The OEM/ODM firm exports to the US, Europe and Japan.
A relaxing foot massage for tired, sore feet may be just what the doctor ordered, and Cheung Hing Int'l Electrical Products Ltd offers the perfect remedy.
The model FM-3288 foot massager with LCD remote control comes with a variety of features. For example, water can be heated to 50ºC, while buttons activate vibration, water jet and infrared functions. There is a timer control that can be set for 10-60-minute sessions. Finally, three changeable attachments - roller, brush and pumice stone - allow the feet to be further cleaned and massaged.
This massager has an FOB Hong Kong unit price of US$42-45 and is exported to Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the Middle East and Russia.
Mainly an OEM company, 1974-established Cheung Hing manufactures more than 30 massagers, from the low- to the high-end. Minimum order is 1,000-1,500 units, depending on the product, for delivery 40-50 days after order confirmation or 35 days for repeat orders.
Production takes place at the firm's 240,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen on the mainland and reaches 100,000 items a month, including a variety of health and beauty care products and small electrical appliances. The ISO 9001-certified company also has GS/CE approvals.
If looking and feeling good is today's mantra, Hong Kong businesses know how to please with products that are designed to improve people's lives.
