Classic product examples that encompass this proven thinking are modern jewellery and accessory boxes and environmentally-friendly, aromatherapy-inspired items.
Regardless of the product, however, Hong Kong manufacturers consistently stand out from the crowd thanks to their ability to combine all these factors into winning combinations.
BBT Int'l is a classic example of Hong Kong ingenuity with its range of aroma diffusers, fragrant oils, home sprays, scented pebbles, gift sets and Zen garden-inspired items.
"Our products are popular with fragrance chain stores, department stores, and hotels," explains general manager Anna Wong, spotlighting new model AD309B, a 30ml aroma oil diffuser that comes with wooden beads and rods that further help release the scent.
A large number of fragrances are available, and are divided into floral, sweet, tangy, earthy and Oriental scents. "A lot of buyers choose lavender, lemongrass, or orange sandalwood as many consumers enjoy these aromas," says Wong.
BBT Int'l uses raw materials sourced from Italy, France, the US and Australia and offers a variety of glass bottle shapes and sizes, with some models also coming with wooden holders.
Established in 2000, BBT Int'l has a 3,000-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland that is capable of producing 500,000 diffusers each month.
They are sold in such major markets as North America, Western Europe, Australia and Japan, Wong reveals. "The minimum order depends on the product, but ranges from 2,000 items for products of higher value and 6,000 for items of lower value - all delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation," she adds.
New models are introduced quarterly and delivered 45-60 days after confirmation. "Part of the reason for our success is that we keep developing new designs and new fragrances, while providing good quality products and services to our customers," Wong claims.
Equally energetic in providing new items every three months is Flamingo Gifts Collection Ltd, which manufactures a large selection of gifts and premiums.
A hot ladies' gift range is its crystal box series designed for jewellery and accessories, which includes a round 30x75mm container that features a green glass crystal lid (model CR-p-010), and a rectangular 60x50mm box with round lid (model CR-p-011).
Both feature brass detailing and are priced at approximately US$10 each. "Our designs are inspired by daily life because crystal items should be used everyday," explains managing director Angela Lau. "These two items reflect the current trend for products that combine different materials, in this case crystal and brass."
The crystal originates from the mainland and is manufactured at the 14-year-old company's 1,000-square-metre, 200-worker factory in Shenzhen, which has a maximum capacity of 1,000 units a month.
Europe, Flamingo Gift's main market, enjoys delivery of minimum orders of 100 pieces two weeks after confirmation. "Our products are in demand by large international companies, fashion chains and designer brand stores," Lau claims.
The mainland provides the inspiration as well as the manufacturing base for Long Trend Industrial Ltd, which produces a selection of premium gifts, POS displays and jewellery boxes.
Chinese-inspired boxes include a 190x145x50mm Chinese Lock model and a larger 150x190x150mm Chinese Cube version, both of which are usually made from MDF although other options such as pine, walnut and Chinese hardwoods are available.
The boxes are painted, finished and lined with materials based on customer specifications, while the interior can also be designed to suit client needs - including, for example, internal drawers, compartments and mirrors.
"These new items are very popular in Europe, particularly among leading jewellery chain stores," says managing director Cecilia Wong, noting that high-profile customers include Swarovski. "Some customers also use them to package chocolates."
The 18-year-old company's other markets include Japan, Hong Kong and the US. "The boxes have been a great success because they are very simple yet have an unusual design, which our clients said they have not seen elsewhere," Wong maintains.
They are manufactured at Long Trend's 5,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the mainland, which can produce up to 5,000 jewellery boxes a month.
All designs are conceptualized in-house, and Wong says minimum orders of 500 pieces for jewellery boxes can be delivered 45-60 days after confirmation.
"We understand the client's needs, because we are also a client for source materials and we know what it takes to meet our needs and therefore what it takes to meet the needs of our clients," Wong asserts. "For example, being trustworthy, consistent, displaying attention to detail and providing the best solution possible."
Hong Kong manufacturers certainly have what it takes to ensure that ladies' gift products have the fun factor that is a vital element of consistent, long-term success.
