Baby Giftware

Flying Dragon Electronic Co Ltd makes a variety of baby monitors with unique tone codes that avoid interference from other electronic products.

THE birth of a baby is a time of joyous celebration for the family and friends of the ecstatic parents. Everyone wants to mark this momentous occasion with extra-special gifts and Hong Kong manufacturers have a comprehensive range of suitable products to meet this generous market's demands.

Remote baby monitors are highly practical gifts for families with babies. Flying Dragon Electronic Co Ltd was founded in 1981 and seven years later started developing what is now its core product, marketed under the Baby Minder trademark.

"Today we have 20 models with a range of features from a simple monitor, to continuous transmission, voice-activated tone controls and digital code settings," explains merchandising manager Thomson Lin. "Our baby monitor has a range of 400 metres and more advanced models such as the FD-D4 can be personalized by parents to suit their needs," says Lin.

Flying Dragon's main market is Europe and its products have RTTE (Radio and Telecoms Terminal Eqpt) approval. Additional markets include South Africa, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Production takes place at the company's state-of-the-art, 100-employee factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Delivery takes 45 days and minimum order is 1,000 sets per model.

Glory Moon Greeting Cards Co Ltd produces high-quality greeting cards, gift wrap and gift bags which add a touch of class to baby gifts. Established more than 35 years ago, Glory Moon specializes in innovative designs using top-quality materials.

Company spokesperson Angel Au attributes the company's success to "always building upon our good reputation established over the last four decades".

She adds: "Glory Moon pays careful attention to maintaining our existing client base. We will always go the extra mile to provide customers with the quality products they require and to meet the delivery times they demand."

Glory Moon has a 2,000-worker, 5,000-square-metre factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland. The company's dedication to good design extends to employing a team of 20 illustrators and artists who work with clients.

"Materials are sourced from Europe and the mainland but sometimes we go further afield to places such as Egypt for just the right effect," says Au. That extra effort pays dividends, she notes, and products featuring special trims such as faux fur and glitter have been doing particularly well this season. Main markets are the US, the UK and other European countries.

Woo Fung Metal Mfy is an established manufacturer of silver-plated metal ware and produces a charming range of baby gifts. Silver-plated baby brush-and-comb gift sets start at US$2.45 FOB Hong Kong and the company also produces a baby eggcup-and-spoon set for US$2.05. A gift set consisting of a baby photo frame, tooth box and curl box sells for US$4.20 per set, while a baby certificate holder is priced at US$3.41 each. Minimum order is 500 units and delivery takes 30-45 days.

The company's ISO 9002-certified, 100,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland has 250 workers. The majority of the raw materials, such as zinc alloy, steel and brass, are imported from Japan and Australia. Woo Fung's main markets are Europe, the US, the Middle East and Australia.

"Woo Fung is committed to maintaining and improving quality in both our products and our processes," says marketing assistant Juneio Lau. "We aim to attend many key industry fairs this year and we will be expanding our own Internet marketing activities by launching a B2B Web site later this year."

Photo frames are consistently welcome gifts to show off new arrivals and Winland Enterprise Co Ltd produces more than three million units of frames, gift sets and related stationery items per month at its factory in Panyu.

Marketing director Kevin Cheng explains: "We serve the high end of the market. Our labour force numbers about 2,000 and much of the process is highly labour intensive as we make many hand-finished products from a range of quality materials. We create our own designs and also welcome input from clients."

Materials include fabric, PVC, PU and wood. Silk-screen designs, plush fabrics and embossed finishes also feature in the Winland product range.

"The US accounts for about 45% of our market but we also do well in the UK, France, Germany and Spain and are looking to grow our market in Russia." Delivery takes 30-45 days and the minimum order depends on the item and design.

Office Premiums

Calculators in combination with a digital calendar (right) or a paper holder (bottom), or showing a transparent look (left), are from Lee Handerson (HK) Ltd.

THERE'S nothing quite like a stylish office premium to brighten the dullest workplace. A brightly coloured penholder or eye-catching name-card holder works wonders on staff morale. Canny consumers continue to demand the innovative, high-quality office premiums produced by Hong Kong manufacturers.

A futuristic metallic collection comes from Ben's Creation Int'l Ltd, which has been manufacturing metal desktop, lifestyle decorative gifts and premiums since it was established seven years ago. Using zinc alloy, brass, stainless steel and aluminium from Australia, Japan and South Korea, Ben's Creation crafts a range of office premiums designed to appeal to the young at heart.

The "Molecule" memo and card holder and innovative "Cap" magic spring debuted at the Premiere premium fair in Frankfurt, says marketing manager Wendy Woo. "They received very good feedback, especially the highly adaptable magic spring that can hold cards, memos or photos."

Ben's Creation has a five-strong R&D team that generates the initial designs for a 600-strong factory producing one million items a month in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$0.70 for the "Cap" magic spring to US$1.20 for the "Molecule" memo and card holder, both of which can be supplied within 3-4 weeks after confirmation of a minimum order of 1,000 units.

State-of-the-art digital alarm clocks, calculators, currency converters and databanks are the specialities of Lee Handerson (HK) Ltd, which started as a trading company in 1975 and turned manufacturer in 1983.

"We are a pioneer in 'one touch' currency converters," says managing director Homer Lee. "We recently delivered our biggest order to an Italian company which is supplying the Italian government with nine million euro converters/calculators."

Production takes place in a 50,000-square-foot, 900-worker factory, which won Lee Handerson a "Top 10 Best Enterprise of the Millennium Award" from the Shenzhen government in 2000.

Five in-house designers combine ICs from Japan and Taiwan, LCDs from Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, printed circuit boards, rubber keys and plastic from South Korea, Taiwan and the US.

The firm's clocks and calculators are marketed under the company's Vedex brand, notching impressive sales in markets such as Japan, Europe, the US and Australia.

"We keep a close eye on design trends and have noticed that euro converters have now given way to other items like digital alarms and calculators," Lee says.

Lee Handerson's latest range includes attractive and functional products such as a ruler/calculator with world time (US$1.80 FOB Hong Kong) and a "Paper-Up Calculator" that combines the simple function of a paper stand with a calculator.

"The Paper-Up Calculator is a brand new product that we are now ready to market at US$0.90 each for 1,000 units and US$0.80 each for 5,000," Lee explains. "This type of creativity and innovation is vital to create new demand in the gifts and premium sector, where companies are always looking for new and exciting ways to promote their names and products."

Minimum order is 1,000 pieces for delivery in about 30 days.

Matching Corp Ltd marketing executive Tanny Yu believes Germany and the Netherlands hold the most potential for her firm's sleek, stylish office premiums. "European countries are more interested in well-designed, good-quality products," Yu says.

Matching's current collection includes aluminium organizers, desktop memo pads and desktop calculators cum memo holders capable of bearing company logos and/or messages. Designed by its own small R&D team, Matching's stationery sets combine aluminium and stainless steel sourced from Taiwan with the proven quality of "brand name" integrated circuits from Japan, the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.

Stationery sets and assorted aluminium products are manufactured at Matching's 500-worker factory in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland.

Elegant desktop calculator/memo pads, aluminium organizers and desktop memo pads typically sell for US$3.50, US$1.50 and US$1.95 respectively, FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order value is U$3,000 per item for delivery within 45 days of sample approval.

"Aluminium and stainless steel not only look stylish in the office, but also last a long time, so we are confident that our products will continue to sell well in future," says Yu.

One product that has stood the test of time as a treasured office premium is the humble organizer. Tonzex Technology Stationery (HK) Ltd offers bright and colourful models.

Founded in 1996, Tonzex specializes in premiums such as organizers, calculators, bags and computer mouse holders, according to administration manager Jacky Yiu.

It manufactures at a 40,000-square-metre, 3,000-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, which is certified to ISO 9002.

"We employ 10 designers, although sometimes clients like to provide their own concepts for us to manufacture," Yiu says. "We have a large catalogue containing different products in many styles, most of which are manufactured from materials such as PVC and denim."

Tonzex's popular organizers are available in five- to seven-inch-high versions, priced at US$1.00-1.20 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 2,000 units, which can be delivered in 20-30 days. Tonzex exports to Japan, Germany, the US, France, Greece and South Korea.

"Young consumers in these countries like colourful PVC and our products have proved extremely popular," Yiu says. "However the worldwide economy is not looking good this year so we are looking to the US to take big quantities of our products for years to come."

Notebooks

Incorporating textiles and plastic into its notebook designs, APO Ltd produces for the US and Europe.

NOTEBOOKS are one of life's under-appreciated necessities. We fill them with school notes, outlines of projects and plans or personal jottings. All notebooks may have a similar function, but they also differ markedly in size, the way they look and how they feel.

APO Ltd produces 300,000 notebooks per month in 20 sizes, from 5x7cm to 30x20cm. Eighty percent are standard notebooks used by children and adults for school or work. The remainder are journals featuring decorative covers made of fabric, vinyl, bonded leather and genuine leather.

"We can add ribbons, metal charms, plastic beads and fabric ties for a more decorative effect," says Ray Lam, a director of the four-year-old company, which also produces photo albums and gift boxes. Recent trends have included the use of denim and organza as cover materials.

Paper thickness ranges from 7gsm to 120gsm, with lined, unlined, coloured or recycled paper available. Customers may choose from wire-bound or spiral-bound versions, and stitched, perfect or antique bindings.

APO's notebooks and journals are priced from US$0.20 FOB Hong Kong per piece for a pocket-sized address book to US$6 per piece for a 15x20cm diary that boasts a genuine leather cover.

Scrapbooks, made with acid-free paper, range in size from 14x14cm to 30x25cm and cost from US$1 to US$3 FOB Hong Kong per piece. Clients may specify cover materials and paper colours.

Minimum order value is US$5,000, with delivery 35-60 days after order confirmation to export markets in the US and Europe. Last year the company introduced its own brand name, noughts & crosses.

Decorative covers are the forte of Union Paper Box & Printing Press Ltd, whose 1,500 workers turn out 100,000 notebooks per month at the company's factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland. Wire-bound or perfect-bound notebooks with paper, fabric or leather covers may offer extra features such as a bright bow on the front or a colourful elastic band tied around the middle as a reminder to others that the contents are private.

Founded in 1950, the company makes notebooks in a variety of sizes to suit customers' specifications and in paper thickness of 80gsm to 120gsm. The notebook pages can be lined, unlined, in any colour or made of recycled paper, according to clients' requirements. "Most of our requests are for lined, white paper," says director Angela Lui. A small percentage carry the firm's Union brand name.

The notebooks, which are aimed at both teenagers and adults, sell from HK$3 (US$0.39) per piece FOB Hong Kong. "The price depends on the size, printing, the cover and the paper thickness. Some notebooks also come with pens attached," Lui adds.

Minimum order is 3,000 pieces per item, with delivery 45-60 days after order confirmation. Exports are mainly shipped to the US and Europe.

Targeting its notebooks at adults, Camford Printing & Mfg Co Ltd has found a growing market for models with decorative covers. "Consumers want something that is stylish and individual," says Timothy Chiu, marketing manager at the 31-year-old paper gift box and stationery firm.

Man Sang Envelope Mfg Co Ltd offers in-house design options and accepts OEM orders for notebooks such as these playful styles.
The company maintains an inventory of 50 cover designs for notebooks that range in size from 105x148.5mm to 210x297mm, with paper thickness of 80gsm to 100gsm. Made with a choice of paper, cloth or plastic covers, Camford's notebooks are wire-bound, spiral-bound, stitched or made with perfect binding. "Cloth covers laminated to paper have become popular over the past year," Chiu says. Prices vary from US$0.15 to US$4 FOB Hong Kong per piece.

Minimum order is 2,000 pieces, with shipment 25 days after order confirmation to export markets in Germany, the UK and the US. The company manufactures 100,000 notebooks per month at its ISO 9002-certified factories in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, on the Chinese mainland.

Standard notebooks for schoolwork are the main line for OEM and private label supplier QP Printing Ltd. "Most of the covers have a little bit of design and printing, although we produce some decorative covers. Plush and crushed velvet covers were a trend last year, along with PVC imitation leather covers," says marketing manger Anthony Chiu.

QP Printing's notebooks range in size from 105x148.5mm to 210x297mm, with paper thickness of 80gsm to 100gsm. The company manufactures about 100,000 notebooks per month at its factory in Dongguan, on the Chinese mainland, or about 10% of its total production of stationery, jigsaw puzzles and packaging products.

The notebooks are priced from US$0.90-1.20 FOB Hong Kong per piece for those with standard covers, to US$1.00-1.50 per piece for notebooks with decorative covers. Prices are slightly lower if they are shipped from Shenzhen, Chiu says.

Customers may order notebooks with wire binding, stitching or perfect binding, with lined, unlined, recycled paper or coloured pages. Minimum order is 3,000 pieces, with delivery four weeks after order confirmation. QP Printing also makes kits that contain a notebook, pen, ruler and other items. Prices depend on the individual components.
