Creature Comforts

Jade Rattan Ware Co Ltd's five-piece rattan set consisting of a three-seater sofa, two armchairs, coffee table and a glass-topped end table creates a relaxed living room.

NOT since the days of Shanghai and the roaring 1920s have all things Chinese been so en vogue. People from all walks of life appear to draw from the Chinese mainland's bountiful well of inspiration, and furniture design is certainly no exception. Indeed, Asia as a whole is a rich source of raw materials that enable Hong Kong's plentiful providers of furniture to catalogue impressive collections for diverse tastes and budgets.

Ava Furniture Co Ltd, at the modernist end of the stylistic spectrum, produces a sleek range of home furniture with a minimalist edge. The range includes leather sofas and reclining chairs, dining and kitchen sets and coffee tables featuring various metal alloys, wood and plastics sourced from the Chinese mainland.

Marketing and sales executive Joanne Yee says the company prides itself on developing simple and logical solutions to the needs of clients. "Flexible minimum order terms and requirements, and highly efficient production standards, ensure prices remain attractively affordable," she says.

Founded in 1995, Ava maintains an office in Hong Kong and a two-floor factory in Shenzhen on the mainland that employs more than 300 workers. There is no set minimum quantity, and shipments usually arrive at destinations 30 days after order placement. Main markets are the US, the UK, Singapore, Japan, Israel and the Netherlands.

Established in 1984, Jade Rattan Ware Co Ltd is a premier example of contemporary Hong Kong furniture design fabricated in rattan sourced from Indonesia. Individual pieces exhibit a dual aesthetic sensibility, sensitively combining the organic qualities of natural rattan and floral prints with the clean, minimal lines and subtle rounded edges of modern design.

Jade Rattan exports enough pieces to fill about 16 TEUs and 16 FEUs, delivered monthly to major markets such as the US, Japan and Europe.

While the office is based in Hong Kong, the factory is in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland. Both the office and factory are ISO 9001 certified. These operations employ a total of 3,120 artisans, and all items are fashioned entirely by hand.

The typical FOB Hong Kong price for a five-piece set of rattan furniture that includes two chairs, a sofa, a coffee table and an end table, is approximately US$300.

Export executive Wendy Lee points to two reasons she believes contribute to the appeal of this style. "Contemporary designs are very popular at present so that's a big plus. In addition, our prices are very affordable. We feel these two elements make our products attractive to a broad customer base," she says.

Qiantang River Arts & Furniture Ltd caters to high-end department stores and design galleries.

The company specializes in pieces that are definitively on the traditional end of the stylistic spectrum, with a collection of Chinese-style wooden furniture as well as porcelain and ceramic objects.

Ideal for lending a subtly exotic air to a lush interior, these pieces are Hong Kong's answer to the current popularity of mass-produced, contemporary furniture designs.

Manager Simon Chan emphasizes the extensive preparation Qiantang undertakes in order to produce these exclusive items. "Our in-house research and development department source new ideas almost every day, inspired by museum pieces and Chinese art history books. We have a team of artists and craftspeople who then turn these ideas into reality."

Founded in 1983, Qiantang operates an office in Hong Kong and an ISO 9002-certified factory in Shenzhen. The plant covers 300,000 square feet, and employs 800 workers.

Main markets are the US, the Middle East and Europe. The minimum order value is US$5,000, and shipment takes place 75 days after order confirmation.

Twenty-year-old Oriental Arts & Furniture's neo-traditional Chinese style features in a collection of hand-painted furniture, screens and decorative accessories for the home.

All pieces are fashioned from American hardwood, Malaysian laminated woodboard and wood composite board. Many of the pieces bear the brushstrokes of floral designs and figurative scenes rendered delicately by hand.

In response to the growing popularity and ensuing international demand for Asian-style furniture, Oriental Arts exports much of its handiwork to overseas markets such as the US, Canada, Italy, Singapore and the UAE.

Business is conducted primarily out of the company's Hong Kong headquarters, and production is left in the dexterous hands of 200 artisans working out of a 38,000-square-foot factory in Shenzhen.

Marketing executive Ray Ma stresses the company avoids mass production in the belief that creativity and excellence are paramount. "We have earned ISO certification, and are capable of a very large turnover, but this does not actually mean much to us because we focus on quality rather than quantity."

FOB Hong Kong prices begin at approximately US$290, which is typically the price of a console in the chinoiserie style. A minimum order from this supplier is one comprising six floor pieces or 12 tabletop items. Shipment takes place 60-90 days after receipt of order.
