Christmas Decorations(HKTDC Enterprise, Vol 02,2005)
Christmas decoration specialist TC & C Ltd, for example, helps keep clients in a seasonal mood with more than 600 models of jolly Santa Claus dolls. Santa's face, hands and feet are made of polyresin or porcelain fibre, while the body uses fabrics such as cotton or polyester. Extra touches include wool (the hair and/or beards) and rabbit fur (coat linings), with each Santa holding a wreath, teddy bear, toy or small doll.
A six-inch polyresin-and-fabric Santa, priced at US$1 per piece FOB Hong Kong, is the 14-year-old company's best seller. The largest, a 78-inch model, sells for more than US$100, while a 12-inch musical porcelain fibre-and-fabric Santa, which rotates on its stand, costs US$4.50. Porcelain fibre-and-fabric angels average about US$5 per piece.
"Our models are especially created by US and European designers, so the facial expressions and the designs of the clothes are suitable for our export markets," says managing director Taron Chang.
TC & C produces 50,000-100,000 items each month at its 2,700-square-metre, 250-worker factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland, and exports most to the US, Europe, Russia, Canada, Australia and Japan. About 25% of the production bears its Christa Collection label, while the remainder satisfies OEM or private label orders. Minimum order is 1,200 pieces, with shipment 60 days after order confirmation.
For a seasonal musical treat, Worldmind Ltd's patented Hand Bell Christmas Orchestra comprises six-inch plastic figurines that play up to 15 different Christmas carols.
Infrared remote control causes the arms of each figurine to light up and play an individual note. The five figurines in the Christmas Quintet set includes a penguin, a reindeer, a Santa Claus, a snowman and a teddy bear.
"You can hang the figurines on the tree or stand them on a table," says managing director Johnny Lai. The same set also hangs on a door, and a motion sensor starts the carols before someone presses the bell.
The figures, which have been available since October 2004, are exported to the US, Europe and Japan. "The reception has been good. They're very popular," Lai adds.
The five-piece set sells for US$15 FOB Hong Kong, and a three-piece set US$10. Minimum order is 500 sets for delivery 50-60 days after order confirmation.
About half of the 200,000 items the 1986-established company produces monthly are Christmas decorations, including Santa hats, lighted tabletop Christmas trees and red blinking noses. The balance is non-seasonal novelty items with sound or light elements.
Christmas would not be what it is without strands of cheery lights, and Wide Loyal Industries Ltd manufactures more than 100 models for indoor and outdoor use. Under its Flexilight brand, the firm offers a variety of lighting products including popular rope lights and a choice of fused or non-fused filament bulb or LED sets.
The 1984-established, ISO 9001-certified company's bendable, flexible rope light is sheathed in PVC and available in a choice of colours in lengths from 18 feet to 100 metres. FOB Hong Kong prices start at about US$0.85.
Lights that can be strung on company-supplied aluminium, iron or plastic frames in shapes such as Santa Claus or Christmas trees cost from US$3-50 per set.
A controller box priced from US$3-15 features up to 18 different lighting functions - fading, chasing, on/off, flashing and speed adjustments - or special lighting effects. "With the controller, you can choose what you want to do. It's very popular," says marketing executive Alex Woo. Minimum order value is US$5,000 and delivery is 30-60 days after order confirmation.
Fancy snow globes in glass and polyresin or plastic are the top sellers at Kiu Hung Industries Ltd. The firm turns out 500,000 globes per month at its Fujian factory on the Chinese mainland.
FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$0.30-5.00 per piece for plastic to US$0.80-30.00 per piece for glass and polyresin, while diameters range from 45-180mm.
"We have thousands of models, mostly of Christmas scenes," says Danny Hui, a director of the three-year-old company. "We also have scenes for all the other seasons though."
Other products offered by Kiu Hung include Waterglobe Buddies recording photo frames and Swing & Sway holiday patches.
A patented, wind-up SnoMotion process plays a Christmas carol and causes the snow to swirl automatically. "There is no need to manually shake the globe," smiles Hui.
Kiu Hung Industries' minimum order is 2,000 pieces, with the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific forming the company's main markets. Delivery is usually 60-90 days after order confirmation.
For the best value for money in Christmas decorations, look no further than the high quality products manufactured by Hong Kong companies.
