Colourful School Days

This effervescent tower of mini ABS staplers in eye-catching shades from Lee Tack Stationery Mfy Ltd is bound to be a child-pleaser

At the start of each school term, while grumbling about a loss of freedom, most children secretly enjoy the opportunity to see old chums again. Going back to school with the right accessories and equipment will also make them happier, and Hong Kong companies manufacture everything from brightly decorated backpacks to Hello Kitty pencil boxes and iridescent markers.

Wonderful three-dimensional stationery, schoolbags and pencil cases come from Tiger Enterprise Corp. "Gone are the days when lessons were grim, colourless sessions," says sales manager Betty Chan. "Today, children appreciate lively 3D pictures on all their bags and accessories. We are particularly proud of our school bags and backpacks made from nylon and PVC."

Since beginning in 1972, the company has grown into one of the world's leading manufacturers of pencil cases and schoolbags. Part of the Kan Hing Group, it has extensive manufacturing facilities in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland.

The factory has a floor area of 700,000 square feet and four blocks of staff quarters for its 2,500 workers. The main commercial office is in Hong Kong.

"We manufacture on a very large scale," says Chan. "Turnover in 2002 reached HK$250m and I think we shall again stabilise at that figure in 2003."

She says that monthly production is three million pencil cases, pouches and bags. "The minimum order quantity is 500-1,000 items and delivery takes place 30-45 days after order confirmation." FOB Hong Kong unit prices are about US$6 for a backpack and US$1.50 for a pencil case with pencils.

Raw material and fabrics include 3D lenticular, polyester, nylon, PVC, suede, jute and leather from Southeast Asia. Major export markets include Europe and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, providing schoolbags with trolleys to relieve the weight on children's backs is one innovative idea from Let-Win Plastic Products Fty Ltd, established in 1984.

"Our brightly decorated schoolbags are very popular," says assistant manager Kevin Shea. "The models with trolleys are the perfect answer to the strain imposed on young backs carrying heavy loads."

Being aware of youngsters' passions for badges and insignia, the company has also added metal badges to its schoolbags. "These are engraved with various logos," says Shea.

Loyal customers in Europe, Australia and the Middle East account for 90% of Let-Win's 600,000 pencil cases/pouches a month production from its 100,000-square-foot, 700-worker plant in Shenzhen.

Conversely, offering small portable organisers that hold every tool a student will need forms the focus of production at Tat Wing Int'l Industrial Co Ltd.

"We are a leading manufacturer in Hong Kong," says administrator Lilian Chung. "Our wide range of office equipment and school stationery products is sold to millions of students and office workers around the world."

She says the company has an extensive R&D department and continually introduces new and exciting products. "We believe that schoolchildren find lessons much more interesting if they can enjoy and identify with the equipment they use."

She adds that Tat Wing, established in 1996, has helped many of its customers to become successful distributors and retailers. "We also supply stationery products to large importers and distributors in Asia, Europe and the US."

According to Chung, the company's mould and engineering departments can handle "the most challenging OEM products", while quality and finish rank among the best in the world. "Our main plant, in Huizhou in the mainland's Guangdong Province, has a roof area of 21,000 square metres and employs more than 800 workers," she says.

Tat Wing does not have a minimum order requirement and delivery takes place 30 days after confirmation of order. FOB Hong Kong prices are available on application.

Writing instruments are the main products of Fulon Development Ltd. "Children love coloured markers, while their mothers adore the fact that they are completely washable and will not stain hands or clothes," says senior export supervisor Stella Chow.

Highlighters like these are great for office or school use and come in six colours, while permanent markers come in 12 colours. There are 10 colours in a set of white board markers, which stain on porous surfaces and are great for teachers.

"All our markers can be silk-screen printed and heat transferred onto paper, hot-stamp ironed and shrink wrapped," says Chow.

Established in 1991, Fulon has offices in Hong Kong and Taiwan and an IS0 9001, 12,000-square-metre, 400-worker factory on the Chinese mainland.

The company does not have a minimum order requirement and delivery takes place 45 days after order confirmation. Goods bear in-house brand names like Rikota, Golden Horse or Wise, or custom labels. FOB Hong Kong prices are available on application.
