Crystal Gifts

THE versatility of crystal has made it one of the most popular materials for use as a gift or premium. Hong Kong manufacturers have developed complex design and production skills, offering stylish, sturdy and elegant designs at competitive prices.

Verworld Trading Co has been designing and manufacturing crystal items since 1980, and today has offices in Hong Kong, San Francisco and on the Chinese mainland. As a result, the company has built up a strong customer base in Asia and the US.

Although the majority of its business is OEM, Verworld produces its own brand under the name BJ Crystal. "We welcome designs from our customers, and can work from basic sketches. We can usually produce a sample within one month, and once approved, production and delivery takes about 45 days," says director YH So.

Verworld uses both sandblasting and laser methods to produce engraving and 3D designs. A series of crystal gifts shows a laser-engraved eagle in flight, a winged horse, and notes swirling around a violin and bow. The crystal items can be placed on top of a light box, illuminating the engraving in different colours.

Crystal comes from Germany or the Chinese mainland, according to clients' specifications. Minimum order value is $10,000, although the company is willing to negotiate, depending on the complexity of the design.

Cassia Time Ltd is a Hong Kong-based analog clock manufacturer that has, in the past three years, launched an innovative range of crystal clocks and other crystal desktop accessories.

"We are an experienced clock manufacturer that welcomes design ideas from our customers. We use both sandblasting and laser techniques, impose no limits on the style and have no tooling charge," says director Joseph So. The company is eager to work with customers from all markets, and can produce samples within 20 days, after which production and delivery takes another 45 days.

"Our most sought-after items at the moment are crystal and marble clocks, designs which we introduced last year. In addition, we are looking at other interesting ways in which we can successfully use crystal with other materials," says So.

The CM8803 and CM8804 crystal/marble clocks each sells for HK$200 (US$25.64) FOB Hong Kong. Cassia produces 100,000 pieces per month at its 5,000-square-metre factory in Hangzhou, on the Chinese mainland, and exports mainly to Japan and the US. It also plans to expand its markets to include Europe. The company has a minimum order of 100 pieces.

Hong Kong Yee Ya Crystal Arts Ltd has only been in operation for three years, but during that time has built up a strong client base in the Middle East. "Our list of designs is exhaustive and ranges from simple envelope holders and paperweights, to complex buildings and figurines. Our speciality is laser work," says manager Kevin Chen.

The company is happy to work to customers' designs and can produce a sample in 7-10 days. It also has an online brochure which showcases in-house designs. "The Web site has proved to be an effective means through which our potential customers can view our work, and we hope to develop this marketing tool over the next few years," adds Chen.

Production takes place at Hong Kong Yee Ya's 3,600-square-metre factory in Shenzhena on the Chinese mainland, where it employs 200 workers. Chen says the company imposes no minimum order and is willing to negotiate order size on an individual basis. Delivery lead time depends on the order quantity.

Established in 1987, Rightone Gifts Products Ltd has extensive experience in the production of optical crystal. "Our company started as an importer of French and Austrian crystal, after which we built our own factory and started manufacturing our own optical crystal products," says sales manager David Hui.

Today Rightone has an extensive range of optical crystal giftware and trophies, which it sells mainly to the Hong Kong and UK markets. "We recently received an interesting order from a UK football club to produce a crystal souvenir of its clubhouse, which was well received. We are looking to develop this type of client base," Hui says.

The company's Web site features a number of in-house designs. Rightone takes pride in the fact that all its crystal items are handcrafted, polished and finished individually - not produced by mould, which Hui says can produce wrinkles and bubbles. Each item is made from optical crystal sourced from the Chinese mainland.

Samples can be produced within 10 working days, after which production and delivery takes around 2-3 weeks, depending on the order size. Rightone has no minimum order.

In Focus

Premium Cameras

CAMERAS have proved popular premiums, and those made by Hong Kong suppliers represent good value and high quality.

The range of cameras from Sunpet Industries Ltd covers both sophisticated and simple designs. At the more advanced end is model 238, a 35mm auto-wind focus-free zoom camera, equipped with a 35-50mm zoom lens, built-in flash and synchronized zooming viewfinder. With an easy film loading system, a motorized auto-wind and rewind mechanism, and red-eye reduction function, model 238 sells for US$8 FOB Hong Kong.

A 35mm manual zoom camera, model 228, has similar features minus the auto-wind and red-eye reduction functions. It carries a price tag of US$6. Model 220, a simpler model, is a 35mm camera that switches from telescopic to wide lens. It is priced at US$2.

"We also make premium cameras with special shapes, such as a flying saucer, an aeroplane, a car or a hamburger," says general manager Joseph Ko. Some models also come in the form of soft-drink cans.

FOB Hong Kong prices of Sunpet's premium cameras range widely, from US$0.80 to US$15 each, says Ko.

"On average, we produce 50,000 premium cameras every day," he says. Materials include ABS from Taiwan and acrylic from Japan and the US.

Minimum order is 1,000, for delivery 30 days after order confirmation. The company sells worldwide, using the brand Sunpet. "We sell mostly to the US. Other markets include Japan and Europe," Ko says. "In addition to its own branded products, Sunpet also develops and manufactures for big brand names on an OEM and ODM basis."

Founded in 1972, Sunpet also produces binoculars, telescopes and plastic lenses. About 1,500 employees work at its 22,000-square-metre factory in Zhongshan, on the Chinese mainland. The facility is certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 9002.

Premiums from Komax Industrial (HK) Ltd include translucent cameras and cameras wrapped in paper jackets which can carry customers' promotional messages.

"Our products include manual and motor-drive versions. Some models have manual zoom function. We also make children's cameras," says sales executive Florence Chan. Most models are made with ABS from Taiwan.

Komax's premium cameras are priced at US$0.70-4.50 each FOB Hong Kong. For instance, a small, disposable paper-jacket model without a flash sells for US$1.

Minimum order is 1,000-1,999 units, depending on the style. Lead time is 30-45 days. "We sell all over the world," Chan says, adding that markets include the US, Europe, Japan and other Asian countries.

Established in 1993 and using the brand name Komax, the firm produces one million cameras - including premium and non-premium items - every month. Production takes place at its 800-worker, 100,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan, on the Chinese mainland, where binoculars are also made.

A single-use camera without flash from Sky Light Industrial Ltd imitates a medium-format camera, where the user looks down on the viewfinder. Called Classic SUC, the model is priced at US$2 FOB Hong Kong, for an order of 5,000 pieces. A single-use underwater camera with a transparent case sells for US$2.15, also based on a 5,000-piece order.

The firm also produces single-use and reloadable cameras with flash, and camp kits and auto kits with cameras.

Says assistant marketing manager Florence Tse: "The cameras are small in size. They are light and finely shaped and have unique designs. Their jackets can carry the customers' logos and they are therefore good as premiums."

The cameras are made of plastics. "For single-use cameras, the bodies are recycled and are purchased from overseas countries, including the US and Japan," notes Tse.

She says the prices of Sky Light's premium cameras generally range from about US$1 to US$2. Minimum order is 1,000 units, and delivery takes about 30 days after order confirmation.

Established in 1997, Sky Light produces 500,000 cameras - including premiums and non-premiums - per month at its factory in Dongguan. The 4,000-square-metre facility employs more than 300 workers. The company exports to Europe, using the brand name NEXT.

Vastfame Camera Ltd makes a series of reloadable cameras with flash. Slim and stylish, they have front covers which can be transparent or colourful, depending on the buyer's requirement.

Vastfame's camera line also includes disposables and models sporting logos or messages. "The cameras are made with plastics sourced from Hong Kong suppliers. They are priced at under US$1 to about US$3 FOB Hong Kong," says assistant sales manager Shirley Lam.

Minimum order is 1,000 units. Delivery takes 30 days after order confirmation. The company exports worldwide, including to the US, UK, France and Japan.

With several brand names such as Vastcam and Vastcolor, the manufacturer boasts a monthly production of 800,000 cameras, including premiums and non-premiums. Established in 1987, Vastfame runs a 600-worker, 18,000-square-metre factory in Xiamen, on the Chinese mainland. It expects ISO 9001 certification by June 2001.

In The Write Business

Pens & Pen Holders

OFFICE supplies is big business around the world, whether destined for multinational headquarters or small home offices. Pens and pen holders from Hong Kong companies appeal to all tastes and price points.

Founded in 1998, pen specialist Future Source Pens Ltd can produce 500,000 metal pens and two million plastic pens a month. It sources brass and plastic from Taiwan, the Chinese mainland, Germany and Italy, and manufactures at its 300-worker factory in Shenzhen, on the mainland.

Stylish pen sets, which include boxes and accessories such as letter openers, are available. Typical prices are US$0.60-0.85 per set FOB Hong Kong, for an order of 10,000 pieces.

Minimum order is 5,000 pieces per item per colour, and delivery follows receipt of deposit by 30-45 days. Future Source exports to markets worldwide.

Company representative Sara Chik says: "We score as a company in three ways. First, we have excellent styling and designs. We like to think that few can match us in this area. Secondly, we make sure that our quality is consistently high. Before shipping, our products are rigorously inspected for flaws of any kind. Thirdly, we have a wide range of products, and this is a matter of customer choice, so that we can satisfy any requirement."

From 10-year-old Super Hyper Ltd comes a range of ball pens and fountain pens with prices ranging from US$0.29 to US$2 each. "We classify this as the middle-to-lower market, and you will find our prices are competitive within that bracket," says general manager Monica Li.

As a manufacturer of pens, key-holders, clocks, desktop organisers and premiums, Super Hyper has a minimum order of 1,000 pieces per item and delivers in 21 days. Markets include South Korea, Taiwan, South Africa, Singapore, Brazil and the Philippines.

The company uses zinc alloy, leather, brass and plastic, all sourced from the Chinese mainland, where it employs 1,000 workers at its 30,000-square-metre factory.

"Our customer service is also excellent," says Li. "We can provide a fast response to customer enquiries, we can sometimes deliver immediately from stock and we have a substantial printing ability. This includes silk screening, pad printing and even laser engraving. We also have our own graphic design department."

Five-year-old Konwell Industries (HK) Ltd specializes in multi-compartment desk tidies, typically priced at HK$5-7.50 (US$0.64-0.96) each FOB Hong Kong. Sometimes made under the brand name Qualis, the products are exported to the US, the UK, France and Germany. Konwell sources plastics from Taiwan and manufactures at a 130-worker, 5,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan, on the mainland.

The company also makes other stationery items such as pencils and scissors. Minimum order is 5,000 pieces, for delivery 30 days after order confirmation.

"We have a policy when we produce moulds. The number of times these moulds are used dictates the final product quality. We are careful not to use our moulds too frequently without replacing them," says manager Albert Chu. "Our prices are not the cheapest, but if you take a competitor's product of comparable price, you will find that we can deliver better quality."

London City Ltd presents a range of desk organisers. Models, which include 15-18 other stationery items such as pens, pencils, scissors and staplers, are priced at about US$3 FOB Hong Kong.

The eight-year-old company requires a minimum order value of US$5,000 and delivers 30 days after order confirmation. The products, made with plastic from Taiwan and South Korea, carry the brand name LC and sell across Europe.

"We know our image is in our product, so we have very stringent quality controls," says marketing executive Bianca Chau. "We offer punctual delivery, prompt responses to enquiries, and free samples.

"We have a marketing team that investigates prices all the time, and we price ourselves keenly according to that feedback."
