Apparel & Fashion Accessories

About Us (HK) Ltd's leather belts - made of cow hide from Brazil, Italy and the Chinese mainland - are available in a wide choice of colours, designs and finishes
Hong Kong manufacturers of apparel and fashion accessories are well-versed in market trends, the clever use of materials and innovative designs

Kudos Knitting (HK) Co Ltd is finding good demand for its mid- to high-end range of knitwear products aimed at everyone from children to mature women.

"We operate a factory on the Chinese mainland that is well able to produce quite complicated knitwear," says Marketing Manager Paul Lui. "For example, we have designs combining crocheted panels with T-shirt fabric. This is an up-and-coming look."

To signify its growth, the firm this year launched its own Kudos brand. The initial lines include a range of elegant garments aimed at the more mature woman and created exclusively for its Japanese retailers.

"However, it is also important that this twice-a-year collection demonstrates our design and production capabilities to our US and Europe customers, who now expect more from their suppliers, especially in terms of contributing to design ideas," adds Mr Lui.

As its name suggests, I Cashmere Co Ltd specialises in cashmere knitwear. The company has its own i cashmere brand that encompasses about 70 new styles each year.

According to Director George Lam, it is vitally important to keep abreast of the latest trends and materials in the knitwear business, and to especially demonstrate creativity when knitting with the newest yarns.

"Following this year's space-dye yarn, we will be seeing a vintage palette for 2008 and 2009," he predicts. "Yarns are also becoming finer, with more advanced production and finishing techniques."

I Cashmere imports most of its cashmere and merino wool from Italy, while some wool is also sourced from the mainland and Japan. "Fancy yarns are also used at times, especially for more playful looks," says Mr Lam.

Generally catering for more mature women aged 35-55, the firm's knitwear often features designs that interplay with different elements.

"This is what we excel at," insists Mr Lam. "We combine knits with other materials, such as leather, lace and chiffon, in different and elegant ways. Our knitwear is also often adorned with items such as crystals, which are popular with our Japanese buyers."

Also keeping its options open by designing new collections from the latest materials is Galaxy Sun Textiles Co Ltd, which enjoys good business in shirts and blouses.

"We have excellent contacts with many resourceful fabric suppliers, and each season they feed us with modern trims that we can incorporate into new creations," says Director Michelle Shing.

Galaxy Sun, which used to manufacture more traditional styles for both men and women, is shifting to more stylish variations to cater for the European market.

"Now, we offer more casual-looking, unisex designs," says Ms Shing. "The garment may be a combination of panels from different fabrics, while embroidery is also sometimes included. We also do washing and finishing as required."

Meanwhile, noting that belts are playing an essential role in setting off a modern outfit, About Us (HK) Ltd is upbeat about its business.

Clearly in tune with the latest vogue in leather belts, the company offers some 50 new items each month to whet the appetite of its young fashion market in the US and Europe.

"The distressed look is cooling down, and mostly we are now working on a cleaner look - finer belts that also feel soft," remarks Managing Director Ma Ka Kin. "However, there is still steady demand for metallic and patent-leather styles."

About Us is also working with buyers in highly-selective niche markets, such as skateboarders in the US.

"For them, we have been making belts with colourful printed cartoons and artwork," Mr Ma says. "This appears to have also triggered a following in Europe."

Mr Ma emphasises that About Us has a very strong R&D and merchandising team in Hong Kong, which collaborates closely with its mainland factory to follow up product development and production.

"Quality is very important, and we continually upgrade our manufacturing ability and technology to improve the finishing of our products," notes Mr Ma.

Faced with the fact that there are few style variations in neckties and bowties, Ching Sing Necktie Weaving Fty Ltd relies upon intricate workmanship as a winning card. This veteran manufacturer has been in the business for more than five decades.

"We continue to thrive because of the word-of-mouth reputation that we have earned over the years," says Export Executive Turner Chu. "Europe takes almost 70% of our output, going mostly to department stores and importers. We also do a lot of premium items for the US market."

Ching Sing manufactures both silk and polyester ties, using materials that are sourced exclusively on the mainland.

"While everything depends on the customer's preference, most European buyers prefer silk items," Mr Chu says. "Recently, woven jacquard ties have taken over from printed designs, and we are also busy with Christmas ties with seasonal motifs."

On this evidence, Hong Kong is well able to meet demand no matter the vogue, the style or the price.
