|Winsource Industries Ltd supplies this 15-sheet crosscut paper shredder with basket (top) and 12-inch laminator mainly to the US, the UK and Germany.|
APART from advances in fax machines, telephones and computers, countless other devices such as paper shredders, laminators, staplers, folding machines and remote video management systems have improved with the electronics revolution. Naturally, Hong Kong-based suppliers develop and make an array of electronics equipment to keep modern offices humming.
Sparko (Far East) Ltd, established in 1982, employs 400 skilled and semi-skilled workers at offices and manufacturing facilities in Hong Kong, on the Chinese mainland and in the US.
The company makes electronic shredders and paper folders, as well as laminators, thermal binders, electronic punches and staplers.
"Our range includes a 15-sheet crosscut shredder with cabinet (model SH 2715CP) with a maximum operating speed of eight feet per minute, along with an automatic high-speed paper folder (model LF283) that folds up to 4,000 sheets per hour in four different styles," says general manager Musat Chung.
Minimum order is 300 units. Most shipments depart 45-60 days after order confirmation. "Our FOB Hong Kong prices are very reasonable, but vary with order size," Chung adds.
Sparko sources most raw materials, notably ABS 312, from South Korea. Most of its output carries the TELKO house brand and sells into the US.
Signal Communications Ltd, part of the TeleEye Group, has facilities in Hong Kong and branch offices in Singapore, Japan and the UK. Since opening in 1994, TeleEye has won numerous awards, including a New Millennium Award for Technology and Quality in 2000 and a Certificate of Merit in Consumer Product Design at the 1999 Hong Kong Awards for Industry.
The company features the TeleEye IV video recording transmitter (model VR-4021) at US$1,200 FOB Hong Kong and the TeleEye IV video transmitter (VT3-4CA) at US$950 FOB Hong Kong.
TeleEye produces casings on the Chinese mainland and printed circuit boards in Taiwan, but maintains direct control over assembly and quality control at its plant in Hong Kong.
"The UK is our largest overseas market. We retain a dominant position because almost every aspect of what we do, including R&D and software or hardware design and engineering, is strictly controlled in-house," says chief executive Dr Cliff Chan.
TeleEye can make 300 units monthly, but this varies with demand. Some responsibilities are outsourced to qualified OEMs. The minimum overseas order is for five units normally shipped to major markets like the UK, the US, the Chinese mainland, Southeast Asia and the Middle East within seven days.
Founded in 1961, Ming Shing Plastic & Metal Fty Ltd was among the first in Hong Kong to develop laminating products. Today, the company operates an ISO 9000-certified factory on the Chinese mainland.
It offers a laminator (model PS02) at US$47.13, an electric stapler (PS03) at US$5 and a magnetic electronic message reminder with blinker (9711EM) at US$0.60. All prices are FOB Hong Kong.
Monthly production for the laminator is 2,000-4,000 sets. Eight hundred-unit minimum orders are shipped within 45 days. Stapler production can reach 15,000 units monthly, and a minimum order is 3,000 sets. Lastly, the electronic message reminder has a 5,000-unit minimum order and monthly production capacity of 200,000 units.
"We are very established, experienced and professional," says marketing manager Christina Chiu. "Our pioneering spirit ensures rigorously high quality. This is something our valued customers expect." The company's OEM clients include GE, Avon, Target and Wallmart.
Ming Shing uses ABS and HIPS sourced in Taiwan and South Korea. Its products bearing the @office brand sell well in Europe and the US.
Launched in 1988, Big Apple Ltd is an electronics trading company making an array of office electronics, including calculators, laser pointer key-chains, translation devices, data organizers and multi-purpose electronic pens.
With substantial factory space on the Chinese mainland and in Taiwan, the source of its laser diodes and brass tubing, Big Apple creates OEM items for sale in Germany and throughout Europe.
Its new items include a four-in-one ball pen with laser-pointer indicator, LED light and PDA stylus (model XP-LII 1K) at US$6.80 FOB Taiwan and a two-in-one key-chain laser pointer/LED indicator (XP-LI JK) at US$5 FOB Taiwan.
Minimum order is 1,000 pieces from monthly capacity of about 5,000 units. Shipment is usually 40-50 days after order confirmation.
"Our R&D and design facilities keep us abreast of technological developments. The quality and prices of our products are difficult to match," says representative Ivy Wong.
