The Sound Of Success

Sino-Rate Enterprises Ltd incorporates movements such as twisting and moving heads in its sound modules that are widely used in stuffed toys

Sound is a surefire seller in toys, greeting cards, musical devices and other premium products, adding a touch of realism or novelty that finds favour with consumers worldwide. Given Hong Kong's enviable electronics industry, it's no surprise that Hong Kong-designed and developed sound modules are making a big noise in international markets.

One firm with a track record of developing a wide variety of sound modules is Sino-Rate Enterprises Ltd. For nearly 15 years, Sino-Rate has been refining both the technology and the design of these devices so that today "many well-known brands of stuffed toys come with our sound modules," says sales manager Michael Lau.

Sino-Rate's sound modules are sold under its own SR brand or as OEM components in many famous brands of toys and other electrical and electronic devices. "Some of our sound modules are embedded in the moving parts of toys such as heads and hands, especially stuffed toys," says Lau.

He adds that some are also used in recording devices inside toys. "As these modules are increasingly used in stuffed toys, the trend is to seek both sound and movement capabilities while at the same time functions and features are becoming more complicated," Lau notes.

"Most of our customers like to develop their own distinct sound and movement features for these modules. We have the in-house capability to meet their requirements."

Sino-Rate's devices are manufactured from various plastic and electronic components, which are sourced mostly from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, the US and Japan.

The company's ISO 9000-certified 3,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the mainland employs some 400 workers who produce about 500,000 pieces a month for sale in the US and western Europe.

Sino-Rate seeks a minimum order of 10,000-20,000 units, based on quantity and complexity and whether they are off the shelf or tailor-made. It ensures delivery in about 30 days.

Toys are equally important to Winshing Enterprises Ltd, which has won acceptance over the last decade or so as an "OEM maker of sound modules for many leading toy brands in western Europe, the US, Japan and Brazil," says director Gary Ma. "Our electronic modules incorporate sound, flash, voice and motion features."

Ma claims that "due to the high quality and competitive prices, it is not surprising that our products are finding increasing acceptance with many discerning overseas buyers".

"We have won recognition for the design, manufacture and prompt delivery of our sound modules," he adds. The company's 15,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the mainland, which employs about 160 workers, processes IC chips from Taiwan, other electronic components from the mainland and plastics from suppliers based in Hong Kong. It produces 1-1.5 million units a month.

Depending on the exact requirements and variety of the modules, Winshing can accept minimum orders of about 5,000-10,000 pieces. Delivery takes about 25 days after order confirmation.

The same dedication to quality and reliability is evident at Kayer Industrial Co Ltd, which has been manufacturing a range of buzzers and transducers for nearly three decades. "Our commitment to quality has prompted us to seek ISO 9001 certification, which we expect to receive soon," says marketing manager Connie Yu.

Materials such as plastic resin, magnets, piezo elements, diaphragms and enamelled wires are sourced from Japan, Taiwan and the mainland for a monthly production of about 180,000 buzzers and 300,000 transducers.

These are manufactured at Kayer's 8,000-square-metre factory in Guangzhou on the mainland, which employs about 150 workers, for sale in Europe, the US, South Africa and Southeast Asia.

Kayer has a minimum requirement of about 5,000 pieces per order, and is committed to a shipping 3-4 weeks after receiving a confirmed order.

"We expect a rise in sales for our sound modules based on increasing use in mobile phones," adds Yu.

Hong Da Industrial Co is another Hong Kong enterprise that is expecting big sales of the transducers and speakers that are integral components for many toys, radios, alarms, pagers, clocks and precision instruments.

The company focuses on overseas markets, particularly the US, Europe and Japan, says marketing executive Gary Tung. "As part of this, Hong Da has entered into tie-ups with established brand names and OEM factories."

Hong Da has three factories on the mainland - one in Dongguan and two in Zhejiang Province - with a total floor space of 33,000 square metres and about 800 workers. The company, which also produces sound modules under its own brandnames of HD and HDS, has ISO 9002 and CE certification.

"Our minimum order requirement varies depending on the complexity of the order," Tung says. "We also have in-house designers who can tackle OEM as well as ODM orders and meet the most exacting standards and specifications."

Hong Da's minimum order varies depending on complexity while shipments take 20-40 days for a confirmed order at FOB Hong Kong unit prices ranging from US$0.10-2.00. Proving yet again that sound module buyers have plenty to shout about when they source successful sounds in Hong Kong.
