The need for security continues to grow unabated worldwide, fuelling an equally insatiable demand for quality products that keep office and home safe and secure
Safety and security devices for the home and office are becoming increasingly sophisticated, but the market is turning to practicalities as the need for simple, inexpensive devices takes precedence in manufacturing.
Whether that means smaller devices, something easier to install or simply less wiring, the days of large, complicated electronic security systems appear to be disappearing.
For example, Hong Kong company Leeds Electronic Engineering Ltd has based its new systems around its worldwide patented two-wire technology.
According to General Manager Michael Lui, normal CCTV camera alarm systems use multi-core cables - for example, most alarm systems need six terminals and six pieces of wire to connect each sensor. "Our system uses only two pieces of wire and any type of electronic wire can be used - it doesn't have to be expensive cables," he explains.
Delivery time for model 2W-CD01, the colour CCD dome-style camera with processor, is 8-12 weeks at an FOB Hong Kong price of US$40 per item. The waterproof outdoor camera (2W-D101) is unit-priced slightly higher at US$60 for camera and signal processor.
"The two-wire system also applies to our alarms," Mr Lui adds, explaining that the systems feature an infrared arming system that provides a remote arming and disarming function via a key with a rolling combination each time it is used.
The alarm systems require 6-8 weeks delivery time with, for example, the LS800S-LCD eight-zone two-wire system costing US$80 per package.
Each package includes a main control panel, four of the two-wire PIR sensors, four magnetic switches, one infrared LCD reader, two infrared remote keys and 100 metres of two-wire cable.
Home security alarm and light manufacturer Swiftronic Ltd, meanwhile, is concentrating on securing smaller places with handy devices such as its new HA28 Help alarm with telephone dialler and RF key fob - perfect for the elderly or infirm.
"The system can dial three phone numbers with pre-recorded messages in the event of a fall, or a situation where the owner needs assistance," Marketing Executive Cindy Lai explains. "A key fob remote 'panic button' activates the system to call the numbers, and also allows hands-free, two-way voice communication."
The HA28, which sells for US$20 FOB Hong Kong per item, is an adaptation of Swiftronic's highly popular MA80 motion detector alarm with telephone dialler.
The alarm uses an infrared detector to sense movement up to seven metres away once activated pre-set numbers are dialled and the alarm is sounded, making it perfect for apartments and small houses.
"It's very popular," Ms Lai adds. "We developed it two years ago and we've sold almost 200,000 units, mainly in Europe but also just about everywhere else."
She says the system is a winner because of its combination of simplicity and low cost - US$9.20 per unit compared with other products on the market.
Minimum order is 1,000 pieces per item per shipment, and OEM is welcome, but Ms Lai advises buyers to allow 3-4 weeks delivery time from the factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.
Also thinking small this year is Power View Industrial Ltd's Marketing Manager M. K. Chan. "Our main markets are Japan and Europe and our designs this year are miniature-size, portable alarms, sensor lights and portable personal alarms," he explains. "This season we're designing especially for the traveller - products that are easy to carry and battery-operated."
Power View's SH48 mini PIR sensor alarm - perfect for guarding doors or windows in the home or office - is attractively priced at US$4.50 per item FOB Hong Kong. It immediately sounds a 105 dB alarm when someone approaches within four metres and 90 degrees, and features a personal alarm for emergency use.
The SH288 thin shock sensor alarm is just 8mm thick and ideal for sliding windows and doors, while the cute Q01 mini cat sensor alarm is a cat-shaped travel accessory with a six-metre, 90-degree range that is unit-priced at US$4.20.
"We welcome OEM and ODM customers with a minimum order of 3,000 pieces, allowing 35 days for delivery," Mr Chan adds. But it's not just the burglar that's an unwelcome guest - fire can destroy a home or business if the alarm is not raised, as Sound Well (HK) Co Ltd well knows.
The ISO 9001-certified company has the problem covered with a wide range of alarms that go through an exhaustive quality certification process before shipment. "Our main markets are the US and Europe," Assistant Manager Fanny Tang advises, adding that the minimum order size is normally 3,000 pieces per order per shipment and delivery takes 8-10 weeks.
Sound Well's SD-131HS photoelectric smoke alarm is CE-, GS-, VDS- and BOSEC-certified, operates with a single 9V DC block battery, is simple to install and features a low-battery warning indicator and 85-dB alarm.
The 18-year-old company has also created the NL-8910 AC direct plug-in night-light and safety light with rechargeable torch, which, like the rest of the Sound Well range, is delivered 12 weeks after order confirmation. "This device turns on automatically when an area goes dark or there is no mains power supply," Ms Tang adds.
Astute buyers can also feel safe and sound, simply by making sure their order books are full of high quality, competitively priced safety and security products from Hong Kong.
