The modern automobile's sophisticated electronics can also increasingly be found in many motoring extras
Today's complicated cars have spawned demand for equally complex accessories that include everything from the humble battery charger to car alarms and reversing aids.
It's therefore not surprising that the highly-developed Hong Kong electronics industry has identified strong demand for after-market accessories.
One manufacturer at the forefront of the industry is Poron Int'l Ltd, which produces the hi-tech Micro Car Reversing Aid that comes complete with a voice distance indicator.
The device utilises an eight-bit microcomputer to provide a variety of features including a 0.3-2.5 metre detection range and warning signals that advise of impending collisions.
"It's our best-selling product," Sales Manager Jimmy Wong says, noting that Poron's best markets are the US and the UK, although it now also has a distributor in Australia.
The 32-year-old company manufactures under the Poron brand at a 200-250-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland that is ISO 9001-certified. "Minimum orders are variable, and delivery is 15-20 days after order confirmation depending on the quantity," Mr Wong advises.
He adds that the parking aid is a simple retro-fit that can be done by any amateur mechanic. "The device will fit any car or truck - in fact, we are heavily promoting its application for trucks as a safety device," Mr Wong says. "Indeed, in many jurisdictions it is a legal requirement."
Similarly useful is the highly versatile 5-in-1 Power Station produced by Autotek Products Ltd, which can be used as a jump-start system, a compressor, a lighting system, a 200/400 watt power inverter or a 12V power supply.
It's one of a series of 12V rechargeable car accessories produced by the six-year-old company that carry the Wagan and Sharper Image brand names.
"Our most successful products are the AT715 Power Station and the AT767 hand crank, rechargeable floodlight," explains Marketing Executive Shelley Liong, adding that Autotek is also introducing a lithium compact power pad.
Autotek is ISO 9001-certified and RoHS-compliant, has CE and UL approvals for adaptors and is licensed to use the e-mark. "The minimum order is 2,000 units delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation," Ms Liong says.
"The US and Europe are very successful markets for our products, as drivers in these areas tend to travel long distances by car and the 5-in-1 Power Station is ideal in an emergency, while the 12V appliances and spotlights are good for picnics."
Also focusing on 12V products is Timberport Int'l Ltd, whose electronic accessories line includes a 12V central locking system, a retro-fit power window kit and a parking sensor system.
"Our power window kit and central locking system are our most successful products," explains Manager Cherry Liu, adding that many of the one-year-old company's products are patented in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland.
Timberport has its own Trackpro brand and manufactures at an RoHS-compliant and CE-certified, 200-worker, 3,000-square-foot factory in Foshan on the mainland.
"Minimum orders are variable but we deliver 4-5 weeks after order confirmation," Ms Liu says, adding that Timberport is constantly introducing new products and is currently developing power window lift motors and central locking systems to fit specific car models.
"Our most successful markets are South America, Eastern Europe and Russia, because vehicles in those countries are not as well-equipped as in more developed markets," Ms Liu notes.
"Conversely, we find Western Europe difficult to penetrate as the standard of products is becoming higher and higher, due in part to environmentally-friendly requirements - for example, RoHS compliance."
Concentrating on different markets, Fee Tat Holdings (HK) Ltd manufactures jump-start appliances to rescue stranded motorists as well as rechargeable lighting systems. "Our most successful markets in the past five years have been the Middle East and Pakistan," Export Manager Peter Ho reveals.
The 37-year-old company's latest range includes the Roadbot Plus portable power source jump-starter with light and the Rescue Cowboy jump-starter with lights.
Both carry the Fee Tat brand and are manufactured at an ISO 9001-certified mainland factory in Shenzhen. "Our minimum order is 1,000 units delivered 60 days after order confirmation," Mr Ho adds.
It is clear that although motor vehicles become more and more comprehensively equipped there is still significant demand within the after-market.
Hong Kong companies have clearly identified this need and are producing some of the highest-quality items available to meet the requirements of international motorists.
Little wonder, then, that motorists the world over know that they can rely on Hong Kong auto electronic products whether it be for safety, convenience or emergency relief.
