Headphones and Microphones

HEADPHONES and microphones have been around as long as recorded sound, but with multimedia technologies converging on the computer, a whole new market is emerging for these audio tools.

"Internet chat is driving the growth of our business," says Techmakers Electronics Ltd marketing manager Edmund Ho. The company, founded in 1984, has a range of products for people who participate in VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) chat lines on the Net.

These include: stereo headphones with microphone and volume control; translucent "backneck" stereo headphones with microphone; desktop microphones; and clip-on microphones.

Techmakers produces about 100,000 sets each of headphones and microphones per month. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces, with delivery 2-3 weeks after order confirmation. Europe absorbs 70% of its output and the US 15%.

The firm has two 10,000-square-metre factories in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. It sources 60% of components and materials on the mainland, 20% in Taiwan, and 10% each in Japan and Hong Kong.

Ho says the company is strong in R&D: "We have two engineers in Hong Kong and 10 on the mainland." TEAC is an OEM customer, while ODM clients include JVC and NEC.

Fujikon Industrial Co Ltd has become one of the world's biggest headphone makers since its creation in 1982. Monthly capacity is three million headphones, 500,000 headsets and 300,000 microphones.

One successful line is model NC-2 noise cancelling stereo headphones. "These are great for airline passengers because they reduce the annoying low frequency noise on board the airplane, while they have a 90-degree swivel that allows them to be easily stowed in the seat pocket," explains promotion manager Sira Chun.

Fujikon also produces standard audio headphones, a wireless Bluetooth headset, headsets for computer games, voice recognition and VoIP, and models for schools and security firms. North America generates 57% of its sales. Chun says the firm is stepping up marketing efforts in Greater China.

Its Dongguan plant has a 66,840-square-metre production area and a workforce of 4,500. PVC beads, wire, electronic and metal components, cushions and packaging are sourced on the mainland, Taiwan and Japan. Fujikon counts NEC, Fujitsu, Koss, Wal-Mart and Kenwood among its OEM and ODM clients.

Zonik Industrial Co Ltd, established in 1994, targets the high end of the market according to general manager Jacob Lai. "Our monthly production is about 600,000 headphones and 80,000 microphones," Lai says. Demand is particularly strong for lightweight headphones.

Its high fidelity stereo headphones and hi-fi monitor headphones with two-way speakers are each priced at US$3.80 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 3,000 pieces delivered in 30 days. Zonik, whose annual turnover is US$5m, says the US is its main market, ahead of Europe and the Middle East.

The company has two 6,000-square-metre plants on the mainland (Meizhou and Shenzhen) employing 600 workers. It sources ABS and PP in Malaysia, Thailand and Taiwan.

Accutone Technologies Ltd makes headsets for computers and telephones. "Our headsets are often sold to computer makers for bundling. The product can be used with voice recognition technology or for VoIP chat," says marketing director Howard Soo.

Monthly production is 6,000-7,000 computer headsets and 3,000 telephone headsets. Delivery time upon receipt of payment is 40 days.

The company was founded in 1969. Its Shenzhen plant covers 20,000 square feet and employs more than 100 people. Components are sourced from Japan, the mainland and Taiwan, while plastic is bought on the mainland. Principal markets are Europe, North America and South America.

Innovation Technology Co Ltd, founded in 1986, makes headsets for use with cordless and mobile phones and electret condenser microphones. Its new Bluetooth wireless headset features 2.4 GHz technology with virtually no interference.

Export executive Cato Cheng says monthly production runs at up to a million headsets and 20 million microphones. The minimum order is 3,000 pieces. Delivery is promised 3-4 weeks after order confirmation. Major markets are the US, Japan and Europe.

Innovation Technology's Shenzhen factory employs 1,000 people. Plastics are sourced on the mainland and electronic components both on the mainland and Hong Kong.

Woodtai Enterprises Ltd makes stereo headphones and a kit that allows for hands-free use of a mobile phone while driving. "Many places are passing laws making it illegal for drivers to use a cellphone at the wheel of a car unless it's hands-free," notes marketing officer Jenny Lam.

Founded in 1981, Woodtai has a plant in Xiamen, on the mainland, with 200 workers. Plastic and mylar sheet are sourced in Taiwan and Europe. Minimum order size is 1,000 pieces for headphones and 500 pieces for the hands-free kit and mobile phone rack. Delivery takes 30-40 days. Woodtai's main market is Europe. The FOB Hong Kong price per set of stereo headphones ranges from HK$4.50-5.70.
