Brilliant Bulbs, Fantastic Fuses

Environmental and health concerns are driving innovations in the energy-saving bulb and fuse manufacturing industry worldwide, and nowhere more so than in Hong Kong. Innovative local companies such as Super Trend Lighting Ltd are utilising the latest technology to produce economical energy-saving lamps, halogen lamps and incandescent bulbs.
Founded in 1987, the ISO 9000-certified company's factories are managed under a professional manufacturing control and certified quality control system. As a result, its energy-saving lamps passed a 15,000-hour lifetime test at the SP Swedish National Laboratory and Danak, the Danish accreditation body.
"Our lamps are rated Class A on energy efficiency labels with luminous maintenance above 85% after 2,000 hours," says sales and marketing manager Cynthia Ho. "A warranty of up to 24 months is provided."
Super Trend develops new products on a regular basis, the latest being a CFL ice-cream spiral, T3 tube model EU-15W. Featuring a 10mm diameter glass tube, it is available in 13W, 15W and 20W. "A lamp featuring slimmer glass tubes gives consumers a streamlined, stylish look and provides brighter luminous flux," Ho adds.
Super Trend sources materials mainly from the Chinese mainland and Japan for its own Luxtek label or customers' own brands. Its factories in Ningbo, Shenzhen and Shantou on the mainland can produce up to three million energy saving lamps per month. The FOB Hong Kong price is "competitive", while delivery takes 45 days for the first order and 30 days for repeat orders.
Sun Electric Co is equally productive, manufacturing a wide range of miniature and micro fuses for overcurrent protection under its own Sun Fuse brand at a 180-worker factory in Hong Kong. "We use high quality materials mainly sourced from Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong," explains assistant general manager Alex Yuen.
One of Sun's smallest micro fuses with lead wire at both ends, the 3QP 3mmx7mm ceramic model is suitable for use in compact electrical appliances while the slightly larger model 4T 4mmx7mm ceramic IEC type micro fuse is designed to European safety standards. "Short-circuit protection in ceramic fuses is usually better than those made of glass tubes," Yuen explains.
Sun's glass tube models include the 5RP and 5T, the former a slow blow 5mmx15mm fuse mainly used in telecoms products. Model 5T is a 5mmx20mm IEC time-lag glass tube type fuse that meets European safety standards for general short-circuit protection in electronic products and electrical appliances.
Available at 100mA-25A ratings, Sun Electric's fuses meet American UL and CSA approvals. Monthly production capacity is 10 million pieces and the minimum order size is flexible, depending on the product. Delivery takes around 2-3 weeks after receipt of order payment.
A similarly large range of energy-saving lamps and bulbs with longer life and better luminosity are manufactured by15-year-old Kai Wo (Asia) HK Ltd, which includes the US, Canada, Europe and the Middle East among its main markets.
"Our new cold lamps are made of 3mm diameter spiral-coiled tube and feature longer life of up to 20,000 hours," says Kai Wo sales supervisor Eva Hau. "They are available in 3W, 5W, 7W and 9W versions with or without a clear/white candle-shaped glass cover for decoration."
Kai Wo's SMT compact fluorescent lamps feature high/mid power options, high luminous efficiency, energy-saving low power consumption and various colour temperatures including 2,700K, 3,000K, 3,500K, 4,100K, 5,000K and 6,500K.
Kai Wo manufactures under its own Oasis brand and also welcomes OEM orders. Materials are sourced from Korea, Japan, Italy, Germany and Hong Kong and the FOB Hong Kong price depends on order size. The minimum order requirement is 2,000 pieces per style, with delivery 30-45 days after order confirmation.
Another company maximising the power of its brand is Hollyland Co Ltd, which was founded in 1975 and sells an array of Holly label fuses and protectors to Japan, Singapore, Thailand, the Chinese mainland, Italy and France.
These include the 2.4mm diameter, 7mm long 20N, 20S and 20T models that enjoy UL, CSA and PSE approvals. A very fast-acting micro fuse, model 20N protects high-end integrated circuits while the 20S medium slow blow and 20T slow blow micro fuses are widely used in mobile phone batteries.
Hollyland director Sharon Wong explains that fuses tend to be smaller and shorter. "In the past, fuses were mainly produced for larger electrical appliances, such as TVs and radios," she says. "As production technology has been surging, the size of fuses has been getting more compact."
Micro fuses can be used in very small electronic products, such as ICs, motors, mobile phone batteries and compact electrical appliances. "Our 3.6mmx10mm mini fuses are mainly used in various types of telephones and energy-saving lamps in the US market," Wong adds.
The 5.2mmx20mm model 50T glass tube time lag fuse is Hollyland's best-selling product and has worldwide safety approvals, such as CCC, SEMKO, VDE, BSI, IMQ, UL and CSA.
Hollyland normally requires a minimum order value of US$5,000 (items can be assorted), with delivery within 3-6 weeks of order confirmation. However minimum order requirements can vary case by case, while OEM, ODM and OBM terms are all accepted, proving that there's no need to blow a fuse when buying bulbs in Hong Kong.
