A change of direction has paid dividends for Eyston Co Ltd, which decided five years ago to forsake manufacturing telephones, videotapes and smoke alarms in favour of producing home safety products via its subsidiary Sound Well (HK) Co Ltd.

"We chose to specialise in home safety products because of the high entry barrier - any manufacturer who wants to produce professional safety products must have very strong technological support and experience," explains managing director Malcolm Lam.

"Since we had already built our technology strengths in related products in previous years, we were confident we could offer the market reliable and durable products."

The change of direction has proved correct as the 15-year-old company has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of home safety products, claims Lam, and is proudly serving worldwide international brands.

Today Eyston's major product lines encompass smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and automatic sensor nightlights, which are exported to importers and retailers in the US, Australia, Japan, and Europe.

"As many of our clientele are branded customers, quality is of premier importance when choosing a suitable supplier - though price will also be one of the considerations," Lam notes.

Eyston's wholly owned factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland has always impressed visiting buyers. "Our 100,000-square-foot factory is well equipped with an in-house plastic injection plant as well as other testing and production facilities," Lam explains. "We also have a very experienced and well-trained labour force comprising 700 workers."

Buyers are equally reassured by the fact that Eyston enjoys ISO 9002 certification, as well as various other approvals including the UL, SSL and CE standards required in different overseas markets.

These attributes, coupled with core competencies in production and quality, are further boosted by the company's dedicated R&D team, which strives to develop innovative new products.

Lam emphasises that R&D is essential as Eyston works for all customers on an ODM basis, and product innovation is the key selling point. "We keep upgrading existing products and launching new ones with added features," he explains.

"While developing a new prototype, our R&D people will consider the product from the user's point of view, as well as whether the product is easy to install from the developer's perspective."

The company has thrived recently by developing new products that respond to market demand, such as the photoelectric alarm with photoelectric sensor launched three years ago. "The rate of false alarms is reduced, and the product design is more environmentally friendly," claims Lam.

Eyston also introduced a carbon monoxide alarm last year in response to increasing demand from the US. "Many US households have real fireplaces, so all households must install carbon monoxide alarms," Lam observes.

Other products that have received an overwhelming response from Eyston's customers include a wireless fire alarm system that links up fire alarms in different rooms.

However, Eyston is not resting on its laurels and Lam expects Europe to be a growing market in coming years, though the US is currently Eyston's biggest market. "As more countries join the EU, we expect the overall buying volume to increase," Lam predicts.
