Global Supplies HK Ltd
|Global Supplies HK Ltd develops and manufactures a wide variety of OEM products for famous brand names and manufacturers worldwide|
The impetus behind the establishment of Global Supplies HK Ltd, a subsidiary of Global Circuits Board Co Ltd, was the development of an expanded customer base and the delivery of electronics-related items outside the manufacturing range of the parent company.
The idea became a reality in 1994, when a team of professionals from Global Circuits - itself a well-known Hong Kong-based provider of printed circuit boards (PCBs) founded in 1987 - was drafted to set up and operate Global Supplies.
"Prior to setting up this subsidiary, the parent company discerned strong demand for services beyond PCB manufacturing. For example, numerous overseas customers also wanted assembly services and a one-stop shop. In other words, they needed to cooperate with a company that could also source raw materials as well as carry out assembly work. As our parent company made PCBs only, it was decided to create a new company to respond to this need," explains sales manager Greg Cheung.
Today, Global Supplies engages in product development and OEM for famous brand names and manufacturers worldwide. With quality aimed at the middle market, the company supplies parts for use in a variety of consumer goods.
PCBs (supplied from the parent company) are available with 1-8 layers. "Although we do supply the 8-layer boards, our biggest orders call for 2- and 4-layer types," he adds. "We are also trying out the market for 10-layer PCBs."
Also available are various OEM services related to PCB assembly (PCBA) and electronics manufacturing services (EMS), including material procurement. A typical product from Global Supplies is a chip-on-board (COB) and LCD keyboard controller. "Besides keyboard modules like this, we also make cards that control the timing and switching sequences in household appliances like toasters and timers," he says.
"Occasionally customers ask us to also produce metal or plastic casing or packing materials. So while an order might call for a simple chassis or may be a product complete with housing, they are all the same to us," Cheung states.
"Our keyboard modules, for example, are not standard, mass-produced items but tailor-made specialties for point-of-sale (POS) equipment. However, we're not targeting items like toys or games or other low value products," he says. "Equally, we are not looking to service very high-end products either."
Interestingly, Global Supplies competes with several European companies. "Our keyboard module technology allows us to enter a market area where the Europeans are already doing business. The product line is not easy to find and quite specialised. One well-known German company produces similar items, and is probably the biggest supplier in the world. It offers very good quality, but is also very expensive. We come in with a quality product, but with a significant price advantage," Cheung says.
Global Supplies shares administrative offices with its parent company, but maintains separate manufacturing facilities in Shenzhen and Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.
"We do everything on an OEM basis and do not require in-house designers as all products are made to meet our customers specifications," says Cheung. "However, we have also built up good partnerships with design houses both on the mainland and in Hong Kong and if a customer requires we can offer a complete one-stop service for design and manufacture."
