Sports enthusiasts, and those who appreciate the great outdoors, need look no further than urban Hong Kong's savvy manufacturers for the latest in sporting, camping and fitness products.
For example, niche market player Platinum Sporting Goods (HK) Ltd, which specialises in sports nets, is betting that its newly-introduced lacrosse goal net has worldwide potential.
Comprising a hollow metal frame with polyester netting, the 6x6x7-foot net meets official size requirements and is priced at about US$20 FOB the Chinese mainland.
"Lacrosse is a sport that's developing and more people now play it," says manager Patrick Li. "We're exporting our nets to the US, where lacrosse is mainly played, but our next stops are Europe and Japan."
The four-year-old OEM firm has already established a strong reputation as a manufacturer of nets for tennis, soccer, badminton, volleyball and other sports.
Standard-sized tennis nets (measuring 42x3 feet), its best-selling items, are priced at US$20-80 each.
The firm also produces accessories, customised bags and marking cones, while future plans call for developing sports bags in nylon or oxford cloth for lacrosse equipment.
Production takes place at a 1,000-square-metre factory in Guangdong Province on the Chinese mainland that produces enough goods per month to fill about two FEU containers. Minimum order requirement is US$5,000 in value, with shipments on their way 30 days after order confirmation.
Meanwhile, golfers around the world are embracing an innovative hinged golf club that helps duffers hit longer, straighter shots and lower their golf scores.
Developed by California-based Medicus, dual-hinge drivers, irons and wedges are available through Hong Kong trading company New Wave Products Ltd.
"We are the sole agent for these products for Asia," says assistant marketing executive Chris Yu. He says that the Chinese mainland is a prime market for these clubs, which are assembled at the company's ISO 9001-certified manufacturing facility in Shenzhen.
For orders of more than 10 pieces, the price per club is HK$500-600 FOB Shenzhen. Single clubs can be purchased for HK$1,000-1,200 each at the retail level. Delivery time after order confirmation is 2-4 weeks.
Touted as the world's number one swing trainer club, the Medicus series is used by half-a-million amateur golfers and thousands of professionals. The clubs are said to eliminate slices and grooves and can be used indoors or out - at home, on the range or on the course. "They're not just for practice," beams Yu, "these clubs really are for playing golf."
A firm boasting more than 25 years' experience in manufacturing travel, leisure and sporting goods is Hoi Lee Enterprise (China) Ltd.
"Ours is a name that customers have come to trust," says general manager Jacky Wong, adding that the firm's main product lines include folding/camping chairs, cooler bags, beach mats, picnic tables, hammocks and a variety of useful bags.
One of its most popular items is a folding chair with a side table and an organiser bag for a mobile phone and even snacks and notebooks.
The US$9 FOB Xiamen item (model HF-403) can be ordered with frames made of aluminium or steel tubing.
"It can be used indoors as a chair for viewing DVDs, say, or outdoors for camping or picnics," says Wong.
The seat, backrest, armrests and organiser bag are made from polyester, while the side table has aluminium sides. "The standard organiser bag comes with four pockets, but customised arrangements of pockets can be provided," Wong advises.
A medium-sized, family-owned business, Hoi Lee produces 10,000 80x50x60cm chairs (with a 28x68cm table) per month. "They're popular because they're comfortable, easy to carry and lightweight," says Wong.
Minimum order is 500 pieces, with delivery 30 days after order confirmation. The firm's major export markets include the US and Europe.
Unit prices of the firm's other folding chairs, hammocks, beach chairs and cooler chairs are from US$1-10 FOB Xiamen. These models come in adult and child-sized versions.
Offering instant relief from aching muscles is a vibrating massager from ISO 9002-certified health and fitness product manufacturer Max Concept Technology Ltd. Made of mesh and PVC, the Max Turbo belt is 160cm in length and can be secured to any part of the body with an adjustable hook-and-loop tape.
Designed to look trendy and colourful, the belt features five speeds and can be operated in manual or automatic modes. The unit price is US$24 FOB Hong Kong and the set includes the high-performance Max Turbo massage belt, a controller, an AC adaptor and a user manual.
"This unit has a strong, 50W motor and it feels like a finger or kneading massage," explains marketing manager Karen Hung. "Generally, competing products have only a 25W motor."
Produced at the company's 20,000-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, the product is exported to Europe and the US. Delivery is 30 days after order confirmation, and the minimum order is 1,000 pieces.
In manufacturing products that make life enjoyable and relaxing, Hong Kong companies are clearly at the top of their game.
