Safety Standards for Non-Full-Size Baby Cribs and Play Yards Amended
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has amended the mandatory safety standards for non-full-size baby cribs and play yards to incorporate by reference the latest version of the ASTM voluntary standard for these products, ASTM F406-19. The amended standards will apply from 20 January 2020 unless the CPSC receives significant adverse comment by 22 November 2019.
The revised standards for non-full-size baby cribs include a lower toehold standard of one inch (2.54 centimetres) to reduce the risk that a child could be able to climb out of the crib (this change had already been adopted for full-size cribs). In the case of play yards, the changes include (i) a revision of the entrapment prevention requirements to include cantilevered play yard accessories; (ii) clarification of where to place a stability testing device and a modified mattress vertical displacement test for play yard safety testing; (iii) clarification of the “mattress support surface” definition; and (iv) an additional warning label for products intended for use in child care facilities.
