Hong Kong Amends Safety Standards for Toys and Children’s Products
Hong Kong has recently amended its list of standards for demonstrating up-to-date safety requirements for certain toys and children’s products. The new standards will become effective on April 1, 2018.
On May 19, 2017, Hong Kong published a press release announcing an updated list of safety standards for four categories of toys and five categories of children’s products falling under the Toys and Children’s Products Safety Ordinance (Chapter 424 ). According to the announcement, these standards are international standards or standards adopted by major economies (for presumption of conformity or demonstration of compliance).
On the same day of the press release announcement, Hong King published the list of new standards in ‘The Toys and Children’s Products Safety Ordinance (Amendment of Schedules 1 and 2) Notice 2017 under Number 102 of legal supplement No. 2 in the Hong Kong Gazette. It is interesting to note that two completely new toy safety standards have been published for acceptance. These are:
- BS EN 71-13:2014 for olfactory board games, cosmetic kits and gustative games
- ISO 8124-7:2015 for finger paints
