The list of European standards, titles and references has been updated for certain product categories without specific legislation.

The General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC (GPSD) is an important piece of legislation in demonstrating the presumption of conformity for certain product categories where there is no specific European regulation.

On 29 April 2015, Commission Decision (EU) 2015/681 was published in the Official Journal of the European Union. The references of the following standards shall be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and shall enter force on the twentieth day following publication in the Official Journal.

  • EN ISO 4210-1:2014 ‘Cycles – Safety requirements for bicycles’ – part 1: terms and definitions
  • EN ISO 4210-2:2014 ‘Cycles – Safety requirements for bicycles’ – part 2: Requirements for city and trekking, young adult, mountain and racing bicycles

  • EN ISO 8098:2014 ‘Bicycles for young children – Safety requirements and test methods

ISO 4210 specifies safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly, and testing of bicycles and sub-assemblies.

The new standard includes an all new category called ‘young adult bicycles’ with a maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more and less than 750 mm. ISO 4210 does not apply to specialised types of bicycles, such as delivery bicycles, recumbent bicycles, tandems, BMX bicycles, and bicycles designed and equipped for use in severe applications such as sanctioned competition events, stunting, or aerobatic manoeuvers.
