|Everfit Sporting Goods Co Ltd produces a variety of exercise equipment, including fitness balls, skipping ropes and yoga/exercise mats|
Given the wide array of sporting and camping equipment available, it is important that buyers are able to source from companies offering either one-stop shop services or depth in one particular product area - and Hong Kong manufacturers are the ideal choice.
For example, Everfit Sporting Goods Co Ltd requires a delivery time of one month after order confirmation for its selection of sporting goods, including basketball and football gear, table tennis and badminton equipment, and a range of exercise equipment. Established in 1988, the company also makes toys and stationery.
Everfit operates a factory in Shenzhen that has a monthly production capacity of 350,000 items and requires minimum order values of US$5,000. The ISO 9000-certified company's main markets are Europe and the US.
"Demand is currently high for general fitness equipment, including exercise balls, chest expanders, skipping ropes and yoga/exercise mats," says accountant Kitty Au. "Some of these product ideas have been around for many years, but are now in fashion again thanks to the current trend for keeping fit."
Meanwhile, the US, Australia, Canada and South Africa form the major markets for JLR Gear (HK) Ltd, which sources, develops and manufactures barbecue and outdoor/camping equipment, golf products and fishing items. In addition to Hong Kong, the 2001-established company has an office in San Leandro, California, and markets its own JLR Gear brand.
According to merchandiser Silvia Jiang, JLR's camping and fishing range are its two strongest sellers, and hot items include model FSH-1003-BU, a six-piece fishing set that contains a lure, a polyester bag, two tackle boxes, clippers, a rod and a reel. "The rod is made of carbon fibre and when assembled measures 129cm and comes with 175m of line," says Jiang.
Also in demand is a hurricane lamp, model STG-8914-BU. "This battery-free lamp can provide up to 30 minutes of light by using the hand crank for only 30 seconds," comments Jiang.
Made from ABS, the lamp measures 12x28x11cm. "There has been great demand for this product and we expect this trend to continue in the next 12 months as it is very reliable," she adds.
Products are designed in-house and manufactured at the company's 80,000-square-metre factory in Ningbo on the mainland. The monthly production output depends on the product: for example, 30,000 fishing sets and 50,000 lamps can be processed for delivery within 45 days of order confirmation. "The minimum order quantity also depends on the product," says Jiang. "For example, we require orders for 1,000 for the fishing-set line."
Billy Golf Ltd's monthly production capacity and minimum order requirement also depend on the product. This company, which has been designing and producing golf items since 2002, offers more than 200 products - from basic golf tees and balls through to training equipment.
"All of our products are designed by professionals who are also passionate about golf," comments sales executive Pinky Wong. "This allows them to develop a deep understanding of the needs of golfers."
She says that one top seller is model GIS3111, a practice golf set that includes an auto-return putting hole, a green ABS mat, a four-piece aluminium putter and three golf balls. The minimum order for this product is 3,000 sets and the monthly production is approximately 10,000 sets.
Delivery to Billy Golf's main markets in the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, France and Japan is 25-30 days after order confirmation, while production takes place at a 20,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the mainland. The in-house brand is Billy Golf.
On the other hand, 1993-established Ranking Int'l Ltd offers a wide array of fitness equipment, outdoor and camping equipment, sports garments, general sports items (including racket sports and skates) in addition to inflatable goods.
One of the firm's most popular products is model 61405, a motorised treadmill. This machine features speed control (1-16km per hour), time and distance readout, calorie count and pulse measurement. There is also a water bottle holder and a port for an MP3 player.
Fully assembled, the treadmill's steel frame measures 174x77x135.6cm, but it folds for easy storage. "Treadmills are ubiquitous in the market and so demand is high," says merchandising manager David Lok. "We find that buyers are attracted to our treadmills because of their design features and competitive price."
Lok says that the company is ISO 9001-certified and markets its products under such in-house brands as Esprime (camping and outdoor), BSI (general sports), Ranking (swimming and inflatables), Prime-Tex (garments) and Buffalo (fitness equipment).
"Many of our products are designed at our office in Werneck, Germany, which appeals to our international customers and those in Europe especially," Lok reveals. "We believe this also gives us an edge in understanding the needs of international buyers."
Production takes place at a 40,000-square-metre factory in Suzhou on the Chinese mainland that has a monthly capacity of approximately 35,000 items. The minimum order depends on the product. For fitness products, for example, the firm requires one TEU and promises delivery 60-75 days after order confirmation. In addition to Europe, Ranking's other main markets are North and South America, South Africa and Asia.
Buyers can clearly keep their businesses active by partnering Hong Kong manufacturers and exercising their winning options.
