Diving Watches

Sun Tai Watch Co Ltd produces this 20ATM stainless-steel analog model complete with three hands and a digital display.

HONG Kong watch manufacturers are taking a firm hold on overseas markets by combining an eye for design with state-of-the-art functions. Adopting a trend towards large, even oversized, watches, they are adding their own imprint to diving timepieces.

A solid stainless-steel analog watch with three hands (model 2919845AXM), from Sun Tai Watch Co Ltd, is geared for action. A digital display features the date, an alarm, a timer, a stopwatch and a back-light. This rather heavy 20ATM watch has a stainless-steel casing and bracelet. It has strong appeal in the mid-range market.

Fifteen-year-old Sun Tai makes various timepieces including sports, quartz, analog, mechanical, auto and solar-powered lines. Its ISO 9002-certified factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland produces 100,000 watches each month.

Minimum order is 500 watches per model, shipped 60 days after order confirmation. Switzerland, Germany, Italy and the US are major markets.

"We have an able in-house design team and sophisticated machinery and testing equipment from Switzerland. Such strong support gives us greater control over production costs and quality," says Sun Tai general manager Candy Wong.

For Acme Watch Industries, the top-selling dive styles include model AL-1000W, featuring a fine-brushed stainless-steel casing and band, at US$8.90 FOB Hong Kong. Two other popular stainless-steel chronograph styles, models AG-1017BE and AB-1007W, cost US$26 each. All are water resistant to 10ATM.

Acme's factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland produces about 80,000 watches per month. Marketing manager Michael Lui says most buyers are from Japan, Germany, Portugal and the US.

Launched in 1986, Stingmars Ltd makes stylish quartz analog watches (water resistant up to 20ATM) embodying power and beauty.

"Our designers strike a high-fashion note with classic and chic styles. One item well received in France has a vibrant strap and is set with a pav?style mounting of crystals. Our watches are crafted from stainless steel, brass, alloy, plastic and/or PU," says manager Patty Choi.

Models SW133G (unit-priced at US$26.90) and SW133AN (at US$30.30) are in high demand. They are made with stainless-steel casings and bracelets, Miyota movements and triple-safety-lock buckles. The prices are FOB Hong Kong.

Model SW570G, a functional mix- and-match watch, is also popular. An interchangeable stainless-steel bracelet and PU strap enhance the watch's stainless-steel casing, while a screwdriver, knife and/or torch serve as accessories. Each set costs US$24 FOB Hong Kong.

"Our competitive edge lies in quality and service. We launch new designs and stay abreast of market trends at major trade fairs," Choi adds.

Minimum order is 300-500 pieces per model to be shipped after 60-90 days. Europe, the Middle East, South America and the US are major markets.

An ultra-deep diving watch from Vitali Co's "Superman of Deep Sea" series claims a water-resistant range of 100-3,000ATM and an innovative no-crown feature. The time is set using a magnetic chain in the watchband's tail box.

Timepieces in this winning line from eight-year-old Vitali feature stainless-steel casings and bands, sapphire crystals and European movements. Minimum order is 200 pieces for shipment within 60 days.

Twenty-C Watch Mfy Ltd, which already serves OEM and ODM buyers and brand-name importers from Australia, Europe and Japan, is poised to launch its own brand in the US, according to sales and marketing manager Riccardo Yu.

"We also excel at premium items. Our OEM experience and strong technical support allow effective cost control so we can offer some items for under US$5 FOB Hong Kong," says Yu.

Established in 1995, Twenty-C offers numerous analog and digital watches. Models CP226-12 and CP226-11 are 10ATM watches with high-quality Japanese movements, plastic casings and cool metal bezels.

Monthly output reaches 40,000 pieces at its factory in Shenzhen. Minimum order is 500 items per model with shipment 40-50 days after order confirmation.

Tiny Timers

Miniature Clocks

Distinctive clocks like this one arrive on desks around the world from Golden Winmark Mfy Ltd's factory on the Chinese mainland.

EXPANSION of the gifts and premiums industry has secured wide acceptance for miniature clocks as trendy and elegant desk or tabletop accessories. Leading Hong Kong-based manufacturers are busy establishing niches for their own ranges.

"A strong in-house research and development team ensures our products are always fashionable and trendy. We believe in continuous improvement to become trend-setters in a fast-changing world," says Golden Winmark Mfy Ltd representative Kristy Lo.

The company offers two miniature models. F1284S12 is a 4cm long, 3.7cm high crystal clock priced at US$6.80 FOB Hong Kong per unit. Model G1364S12 is a zinc-alloy timepiece measuring 7x7.7x1.5cm and priced at US$4.40 FOB Hong Kong.

Eleven years old and ISO 9001-certified, Golden Winmark operates a 1,200-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. Filling minimum orders for 500 units featuring a "blank finish" requires 30 days from approval of samples to shipment, Lo says.

"Our Hong Kong head office sources raw materials from Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland while our factory constantly monitors quality," Lo adds.

Aztec Int'l Co Ltd designs, manufactures and markets stylish executive gifts and premium items. "Using our own design team, we create innovative and high-quality desktop items in metal, acrylic, wood and leather," says sales supervisor Sonya Wen.

After the zinc alloy from the Chinese mainland arrives at Aztec Int'l's 600-worker factory in Dongguan, the company makes four models of miniature-clocks, each about 7cm high and featuring basic time display.

Models C053, C135, C165 and C277 cost about US$4.30 FOB Hong Kong per unit for minimum orders of 500 pieces shipped 35-45 days after confirmation. The company sells mainly to buyers in Europe and the Middle East.

Founded in 1991, Joyas Mfg Ltd has shifted successfully from premium silver stationery items to a broader array of clocks, accessories, calculators, photo frames, key-chains, household items and gift sets.

"High standards of service and quality with keen attention to detail allow us to secure as customers such well-known labels as Nino Cerutti, Mikimoto, Links of London, Cartier and Aquascutum, to name a few," says marketing manager John Barnes.

Joyas Mfg's factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland is "one of the most technologically advanced of its kind", Barnes says. It has more than 1,200 skilled staff members with 300 solely dedicated to quality control.

"Therefore it comes as no surprise that Joyas Mfg has been accredited with ISO 9001," Barnes adds.

The company's local and overseas designers pay fastidious attention to detail. Nearly 60% of all items are made by hand, says Barnes. Major markets are the US, Germany, Italy, Australia, Spain and the UK.

Joyas uses die-cast zinc alloy and Japanese movements for its miniature clocks, each costing US$4-15 FOB Hong Kong. Minimum orders are for 500 pieces and a minimum order value of US$6,500 per shipment. Production takes 30 days.

ALP Industrial Ltd was established in 2000. "That makes us young, energetic and creative, but our factory and parent company have more than 20 years' experience in watches and clocks," says representative Arthur Fung.

ALP has three miniature-clock models: a basic version, a weather station, and a world-time clock for which the company has developed its own ICs. Its 500-worker factory in Shenzhen uses such raw materials as stainless steel, zinc alloy, silicon and wood.

The company's smallest miniature clock is 50x15x50mm and 174 grams. Major export markets include the US and Europe. FOB Hong Kong prices are US$2.50-5.00 per unit, and the minimum order is 500 pieces. Shipment is 35-50 days after order confirmation.

Fung says original designs, strong quality and high-value products can help ALP capture more business.

Flair Wear

Children's Watches

Among the LCD and analog creations from San-Ban Int'l Ltd is a yo-yo timepiece (left) likely to pack free moments with fun.

NEW children's watches from Hong Kong suppliers combine bright colours with sturdy plastic or metal straps in designs likely to twig the sense of fun within youngsters in markets all around the world.

A new range from On-United Ltd provides good examples. "The watches are classic, sporty and fashionable," says marketing manager Wan Kwok.

Priced at US$2-2.50 FOB Hong Kong, the various models have straps and dials with cartoon characters or more traditional designs. "We produce innovative watches and clocks that combine style with practical functions," Kwok says.

On-United offers new designs each quarter. The five-year-old company uses plastic, alloy, brass and stainless steel to make 200,000 units monthly at its factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. The products sell in the US, Europe and Southeast Asia. Minimum order is 1,000 pieces for shipment after 30-40 days.

The company also makes adults' watches, wall clocks and alarm clocks.

Another way to capture youthful interest is through unusual features like 3D designs and movable parts.

New creations from San-Ban Int'l Ltd appeal to fans of the quirky. "Our bubble watch has a PVC strap and a dome lens made from ABS. Mineral oil filtered inside the lens supports floating objects, all of which are hand painted," says sales manager Mandy Lai. The unit price is US$1 FOB Hong Kong.

A flip-top watch at US$1.10 FOB Hong Kong has a dome lens and flashing light. The minimum order is for 2,000 pieces with shipment after 30 days. Major markets are the US and Europe.

"These watches are ideal promotional items. If a company wants to conduct a promotion, we can do an imprint on the dials or straps," Lai says.

Equally unusual is a yo-yo watch. Its removable dial has great play appeal because it actually is a yo-yo. Luckily for parents striving to teach their children punctuality, it continues keeping time even when in action as a yo-yo.

Eleven-year-old San-Ban produces 800,000 pieces monthly using materials sourced mostly from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Its mainland factory in Guangzhou employs 1,600 workers.

Promotec Productions Ltd launches new children's watches about twice per year. Its own-designed LCD jelly watches with 3D miniatures are a big hit among young consumers.

The 3D miniatures on various models include cars, planes, soccer balls and frogs. Promotec supplies its 300-worker factory in Shenzhen with PVC and LCDs from the Chinese mainland. The two-year-old company makes about 150,000 units monthly for shipment within 3-4 weeks of order confirmation.

"These watches work well for corporate promotions, for example in the airline, car and IT industries," says marketing executive Kary Cho.

Major markets are in Europe, North America and Asia. Most of the company's European business is from Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the UK.

A minimum order is for 1,000 pieces at US$1.50 FOB Hong Kong each.

REAC Electronic Co Ltd produces unusual pendant watches, each priced at about US$2.80 FOB Hong Kong.

"We can design to clients' requests," says sales and marketing manager Wendy Chan. About 80% of the company's watches are OEM creations.

Along with LCD and analog watches, five-year-old REAC Electronic offers calculators, touch-screen data banks and travel alarm clocks. Its 500-worker factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland makes about 200,000 pieces monthly.

The company has an office in Japan, which is one of its major markets along with Europe and the US. Minimum orders are for 1,000-5,000 pieces with shipment after 45 days.
