Timepiece Brands Command Full Attention In New Setting
MAKERS and buyers of brand-name timepieces, many of whom already regard the Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair as a vital industry showcase, are destined to discover an important added attraction at the 2000 fair, scheduled for 6-10 September at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC).
A new Brand Name Gallery will feature manufacturers of fashion labels, licensed and original brands displaying their products in specially designed booths for the convenience of international buyers. The participating exhibitors come from Hong Kong and around the world. Target visitors include agents, importers, retailers and wholesalers of brand names in Asia.
"In view of the keen competition in the watch and clock market, the development of brand names is often the most viable business strategy to differentiate products from their competition," says Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) senior manager for exhibitions Anne Chick. "A Brand Name Gallery at the world's largest timepiece exhibition is an ideal venue to showcase branded collections."
The new gallery, jointly organized by TDC, the Hong Kong Watch Mfrs Assn Ltd and the Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd, will operate throughout the fair in the Hall 1 concourse, Level 2, at the HKCEC.
Usually brisk visitor traffic will be supplemented by special buyers' groups from major countries and regions, including the Chinese mainland, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.
"Hong Kong plays a pivotal role in the trade and distribution of brand-name watches. Inception of a Brand Name Gallery is consistent with industry development," Chick says.
"Visitors searching for branded products certainly should be able to satisfy their requirements very quickly."

IN 1996, the brand name Arbutus was established by Bomass Ltd. The Arbutus line features watches, jewellery and eyewear, and Arbutus timepieces have been distributed throughout the Asian region, including Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia. To maintain an exclusive profile, retail outlets for Arbutus are very selective.
The product image is trendy and fun, but clean and clear. Product categories include casual, classic, executive, sporty, special limited edition and collectable edition. Packaging is tailor-made to illustrate different merchandise and categories.
With support from engineers, designers and R&D personnel, Arbutus has maintained high quality and a strong emphasis on up-to-date designs. Retail prices for Arbutus products range from HK$150-1,300 (US$19-167). The target market is males and females from teens to middle age.
Arbutus plans to launch its merchandise worldwide and expects to achieve a global image in the near future.

Accumulating a decade of experience in the watch industry, Happy Hour specialized in licensed cartoon watches and clocks, design and production.
The company is an agent for Sesame Street, Popeye, Felix the Cat, Pink Panther, Mini Cooper and other timepieces. In 1998, Happy Hour launched its own Big Spanda brand, the newest funky models of which include the pop-up watch and swinging-eyes series. Some Happy Hour designs are patented.
For cartoon timepieces, Happy Hour constantly releases new designs and products. It has its own design team which is especially skilful at creating fancy designs and gimmicky items. The design team's mission is to attract customers while showing them how enormous fun can be derived from many things that may look dull or common.
While implementing marketing strategies, the company's marketing team works closely with the design team and provides the latest market trend information for creation of new items. Most of the timepieces are popular in the local market, but Happy Hour also seeks overseas buyers for its own brand and licensed brands.

IN the 1960s the MOMO brand began at a production plant producing steering wheels in Tregnago, near Verona, Italy. The MOMO product range later diversified to include sunglasses, leather goods, pens, sterling-silver key rings, motorcycle techwear, helmets, shoes, snowboards and hi-tech-design watches under the name of MOMO Design.
The first Italian-made MOMO Design watch collection was launched in 1996 in Italy. Now MOMO Design watches appear worldwide, with distributors in Italy, Brazil, Switzerland, Portugal, France, Argentina, Spain, Mexico, Malta, Japan, Chile, Canada, Venezuela and the US.
A major characteristic of MOMO Design watch-making is the use of hi-tech materials, such as super hard and light carbon fibre for watch cases and dials. Already having launched an online retail outlet on the Internet, MOMO DESIGN aims to make the Chinese mainland its next target market.

NICHIO Marketing Ltd and Nichio Int'l Ltd were established in 1993. Their own brand names are James Dean and Marilyn Monroe. In addition, Nichio is the sole agent in Asia of DPW Italian Military watches.

AN American-designed watch brand established in New York during the late 20th century, United finds its major market among American youth, with particular success in New York and Los Angeles.
