A constant focus on design, quality craftmanship and on-time delivery, combined with a thorough understanding of customer market needs, has ensured that Hong Kong fine jewellery company Trigrand Ltd continues to flourish in a highly competitive industry.
A vertically integrated business from design to delivery, the company produces quality-finished fine jewellery for the mass market, targeting large volume retail jewellery companies and wholesalers as well as subcontractors.
"Trigrand's primary focus and expertise has always been casting and stamping, as well as manufacturing a wide range of jewellery findings," explains Group Sales and Marketing Manager Terence Wu.
The company began casting jewellery in Hong Kong in 1984, moving production to Foshan on the Chinese mainland in 1992, where it opened a large, purpose-built factory in 2007.
"Our 45,000-square-metre facility features a dedicated building for casting and another for stamping and silver," notes Mr Wu. "Our casting capacity is over two million manufacturing units per annum."
The ISO 9001-certified factory produces diamond, precious and semiprecious stone jewellery in 9K, 10K, 14K and 18K gold as well as platinum and silver. "Our own designs account for some 70% of production, with the remaining 30% being customers' concepts," Mr Wu adds.
Trigrand Ltd is one of the sales arms of the Trigrand Worldwide Group, handling sales in Europe and the British Commonwealth.
The group's sales outlets also include Global Band Ltd (North and South America), and Henry Jewellery Inc, its affiliated sales office in the US.
Bao Hui Ltd handles stamping and findings sales for the group, while Summit Jewelry Mfg Ltd is the group's wholly owned factory in China, responsible for all production.
"Bao Hui is one of the largest manufacturers of stamping jewellery and findings in Asia," Mr Wu claims. "Its extensive stamping product range includes lightweight bracelets, cufflinks and lockets as well as a comprehensive collection of findings."
Trigrand aims at the mid-range jewellery market with prices from US$50-1,000 per piece wholesale FOB Hong Kong. "Ultimately, we are unsurpassed in our stamping and casting capabilities for our target market level," claims Mr Wu.
"With our new plating department focusing on rhodium plating, micron plating, and electro-forming, we believe we have one of the largest, best equipped and most advanced plating departments of any jewellery factory in China."
The company employs some 1,500 staff - including 16 designers at its factories and 5 at its Hong Kong and Los Angeles offices - and is equally committed to hi-tech innovation with 20 CAD/CAM programmers. "Every approved design is filed electronically in CAD form, enabling ready access for prototyping which ultimately increases efficiency," says Mr Wu.
Other important services and facilities include diamond and gemstone sorting, matching and grading, and fully equipped laboratories for assaying gold and for quality assurance testing.
Mr Wu notes that every one of the Summit Jewelry Mfg's setters' benches is equipped with a microscope for micro-setting, and all precious metal refining is carried out in-house. "With our dedicated facility, fully equipped with the most advanced equipment and approved by the authorities as environmentally sound, we are able to conduct all precious metal refining in-house, thus increasing efficiency and guarantee quality," he adds.
The firm's craftsmanship and capabilities are clearly reflected in Trigrand's 2009 fine jewellery collection "Back to Basics", which is designed for everyday wear. "This diamond-set collection is both contemporary and chic, offering a clean, fresh look," says Mr Wu. "The new micro-pavm and bridal ranges look set to be particularly well received this year."
The company will diversify this year with a new high-end line of silver jewellery, following increased interest from existing customers for quality silver products. "This collection features highly polished, well-finished silver designs set with diamonds, semiprecious stones and cubic zirconia," Mr Wu reveals.
Trigrand's customers include some of the biggest names in the mass jewellery market in the US and in Europe, underlining the company's acknowledged position as a competitively priced manufacturer with a strong emphasis on quality.
"Our key selling point is to provide customers with well designed and finished pieces, of jewellery at highly competitive prices, while emphasising the importance of excellent customer service," Mr Wu asserts.
"We are also well-known for punctuality in delivery and our problem-solving abilities to help clients meet their changing needs."
Amid the current global economic downturn, the future will be survival of the fittest, Mr Wu believes, with those companies that show staying power prospering as there is "always demand" for well-finished jewellery.
"Controlling your own production process, having a strong capital base, being innovative and willing to diversify, while maintaining product quality will be very important components," Mr Wu concludes.
"In addition, we will look to explore other markets in Europe, such as Scandinavian countries, expand our Eastern European business, and look at new possibilities in North America to develop and prosper during the challenging times ahead."
