|Kwan Hing (HK) Products Fty Ltd manufactures imitation and costume jewellery, fashion jewellery findings and settings|
Kwan Hing (HK) Products Fty Ltd has more than 35 years' experience in the manufacturing and supplying of fashion jewellery findings, jewellery settings and imitation jewellery accessories.
"For the past eight years we have been diversifying our business to include more finished products, and this has proved successful," says manager Jimmy Law. "We mostly handle OEM projects, while also producing some items for the gifts and premiums sector."
Law says the bulk of production is in imitation jewellery, which he distinguishes from costume jewellery by the materials used. "Most of the designs come from clients but we also have our own design team," he adds.
With the foray into jewellery-making proving very worthwhile, the firm now employs some 1,000-1,500 employees at its two plants that boast a total of 100,000 square feet of production.
Established in 1968, Kwan Hing relocated its plant to Dongguan on the Chinese mainland in 1979. A second factory was established in 2000.
The firm's full product range spans imitation and costume jewellery; metal pendant jewellery; earrings; bracelets; display items; finger rings; hair clips; key rings; scarf rings; and jewellery findings.
"Essentially, we are a one-stop shop service provider," adds Law. "We can do everything from the production of basic items like the findings to pre-manufactured finished or semi-finished parts and components, and the fasteners and various parts used to make jewellery like clasps, hooks, pin backs, jump rings and earring backs. We can also offer design and assembly work."
Apart from an in-house jewellery design team, Kwan Hing also has a fully computerised workshop fitted with the latest workstations and software that generate prototypes.
"We also incorporate computer numerical control techniques, and in 2005 we built a laboratory that allows us to carry out QC checks at each stage of production."
Apart from developing new lead-free formulae, the laboratory also carries out tests to ensure materials and products comply with the stringent safety requirements in the US (ASTM) and Europe (EN) and of course RoHS.
"Whereas many manufacturers only test at the final product stage, when an item leaves our production lines it is truly ready to go," Law asserts.
Kwan Hing uses milling machines, wire-cutting machines, grading machines and drilling machines, plus a series of mould-making machines. There is also a workshop for mould-making and repair, plus smelting machines, alloy injection moulding machines and machines for cleaning surfaces and smoothing.
Test equipment includes torque strength measurement to assure safe performance appropriate to each material used. Samples of materials undergo degradation tests and chemical analyses to determine the content.
"We also have our own plating factory, and we are planning to add a specialist plant for ABS work," says Law."All of these moves are designed to lower product costs in view of constantly increasing metal prices."
Apart from providing production services, Kwan Hing offers design and development services, prototype making, mould-making, and laboratory and engineering support to the jewellery and toys industries. "High confidentiality and information security is a priority in order to protect the interests of clients." Law assures.
"On the mainland, there are many manufacturers of finished imitation jewellery products. However, very few also make the findings as we can. This is our competitive edge," says Law.
"This facility gives us control over the content of the parts and thus the finished products. Eventually, with the plating factory on-stream and the plastics factory up and running, Kwan Hing will process everything in-house."
It certainly seems that Kwan Hing has sparkling prospects likely to attract international buyers.
