Multipurpose Watches(HKTDC Watch & Clock, Vol 02,2006)
Something For Everyone
Highlights from Sunway Int'l Holdings Ltd include these digital models that show dates and months and also boast calculator functions
Digital watches have finally come of age. No longer the poor relations of their mechanical predecessors they have evolved into rugged, portable timepieces that offer functionality way beyond traditional analogue models.
Hong Kong companies have been quick to exploit the fact that consumers are likely to own several specialist multifunction timepieces, such as the handy digital calculator watches with built-in keypads offered by Sunway Int'l Holdings Ltd.
The 22-year-old company produces 19.5 million watches a month at its factory in Fujian Province on the Chinese mainland, many of which bear such brand names as Sunway, Kenko, Gavao and SLTOM.
"We introduce up to eight new models each month in order to keep up with worldwide demand," sales manager Teddy Chow reports. "Multifunction watches are a key growth area, and the digital calculator models are among the most popular."
Sunway's digital calculator watches provide standard functions such as date, month and alarm as well as eight-digit calculator functions, while the KK-716 model is an English-speaking watch that announces the time.
FOB Hong Kong prices range from US$0.44 per piece for the standard KK-907 digital calculator model without alarm to US$0.75 each for the KK-716; both available in minimum order quantities of 3,000 watches delivered 30 days after order confirmation. "We export worldwide," Chow adds.
Similarly dedicated is Wing On Cheong Watch Industries Int'l Ltd, whose latest catalogue features a radio-controlled model that offers the functionality of a digital timepiece and also automatically synchronises with time signals in the US or Japan.
The radio-controlled watch is manufactured at Wing On's factory in Guangdong Province on the mainland, which produces 800,000 watches a month, and costs US$4.95 FOB Hong Kong each. "We can be flexible on minimum orders, which are normally 1,000 pieces delivered 30 days after order confirmation," Li says, adding that Wing On also produces pulse and temperature reading watches aimed at the health-conscious consumer in the US and Europe.
Lifestyle watches such as the innovative K930 Audio Connector heart rate monitor with multi-audio connector that allows the wearer to listen to an MP3-CD player, portable stereo or minidisk player are also among the most popular models offered by Kinger Int'l Ltd, which has been in the business since 1982.
"The K930 is extremely popular as it combines all the features normally found in a multifunction stopwatch with a heart monitor and audio reporting function, allowing the wearer to synchronise exercise with heartbeat," marketing executive Jackal Tsoi claims.
The Audio Connector is manufactured at Kinger's 1,350-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the mainland, which is ISO 9000-certified and employs 200 workers to produce various health-oriented products, many of which bear the Pulse Sonic brand. "The Audio Connector costs US$11.50 each FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 3,000 pieces," Tsoi advises.
Opting for a brighter, more colourful look is Adet Pacific Industrial Ltd, whose Rainbow LED watch incorporates a seven-colour display and is water resistant to 5ATM. "This is a fun product that has proved so popular that we have incorporated the display in various other models," marketing executive Angie Lee reveals.
Not content to depend on one successful model, the eight-year-old company also produces other multifunction timepieces such as thermometer and pedometer watches that are steady sellers among the growing number of fitness enthusiasts worldwide.
Adet manufactures digital watches, thermometers, pedometers and gift and premium items, many of which carry the firm's Adet brand, at its Shenzhen factory and exports to Japan, Europe, the US and Canada.
FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$1.98 for the basic Rainbow watch to US$3 for the thermometer watch for minimum orders of 500 pieces delivered 45 days after order confirmation.
Making a concrete link between space and time is the PowerDisk MP3 recording watch manufactured by Man Power Int'l at a 500-worker factory in Dongguan that is ISO 9000-certified and meets CE and FCC standards.
Sporting a trendy analogue face and rugged good looks, the shockproof PowerDisk boasts hi-tech features such as a built-in microphone for voice recording, built-in Hi Li-ion rechargeable battery and 128MB-1GB memory that allows users to store files.
"The PowerDisk is patent-protected and has been appointed the official timer of the Chinese mainland space ship Shenzhou VI," notes Man Power sales manager Keith Cheung. "It provides MP3 compression from 32Kbps to 256Kbps and comes with earphones and all the accessories necessary to connect it to a PC for data management."
The PowerDisk is available in minimum quantities of 100 units delivered two weeks after order confirmation to such major markets as Europe - particularly Germany and Spain - the US and the mainland.
It's obviously tough to beat Hong Kong companies when it comes to innovative multifunction watches built to high quality standards and delivered promptly and efficiently at highly competitive prices.
