DJ Frameworks Ltd uses crystals and special laminations to make its latest optical frames collection stand out from the crowd
Smart frames for both prescription lenses and sunglasses have long been identified as fashionable and chic. This is also true for the new ophthalmic glasses made of ultra-light materials that are now high fashion, even supplanting contact lenses with their sexy shapes and translucent colours.

Hong Kong has become one of the top spots in the world for making frames for eyeglasses, with multimillion-dollar investments in the latest hi-tech machinery and teams of creative designers to supply some of the world's top fashion names.

"We have an in-house design team that produces a new collection every month, or if customers have their own ideas, we may work on the design with them," says DJ Frameworks Ltd director Jane Tang.

"This year," she adds, "very big frames with a lot of ornamentation, including crystals on the sides, are popular. Some of the frames are especially laminated and some incorporate nylon."

The 1994-established DJ Frameworks has already become a household word for quality frames. "All-round, I would say our styles are very innovative, and we often stand out among others in the trade by creating new collections. We are known for our non-stop production of the novel," claims Tang.

"More than 80% of our frames are handmade," she adds, "and we also make the lenses for sunglasses, while the customer usually supplies prescription lenses." FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$5-10 including non-prescription lenses.

DJ Frameworks has an annual turnover of about US$2.5m, and produces 100,000 frames a month. These are prepared by 500 workers in the firm's factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland. The minimum order is 300 frames per model for delivery within 90 days of order confirmation, and major markets are the US, the UK and Germany.

Another company that has invested heavily in state-of-the-art machinery is Mech-Tronic Precision Mfg Ltd. "We are today a design and technically-orientated powerhouse," claims managing director Raymond Leung.

"Founded 16 years ago by a Hong Kong University graduate, we have grown into a leading manufacturer of precision parts and every frame we make is handled by us 100% of the time," he adds.

‘We produce 70,000-80,000 frames a month, including metal, acetate and titanium models, and our sunglasses are sold under some famous names," he adds.

Styles for sunglasses this year are very big, to conceal the face and in bold contrasting colours like green, yellow and red. "For women, these large frames are not being worn to hide her identity but actually to draw attention to her," Leung smiles, "while sunglasses for men tend to be a little more conservative."

FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$12 for titanium to US$9-17 for other metals and US$4-8 for acetate.

The company's 6,000-square-metre factory in Huizhou on the mainland is ISO 9001-certified and employs 460 workers. A minimum order is 300 pairs per model for delivery 75-120 days after order confirmation. Major markets are Europe, the US, South Africa, Brazil and Asia.

Meanwhile, shimmering Swarovski crystals are a feature of the glamorous frames made by Wah Ming Optical Mfy Ltd. "We continually work to advance ourselves through new techniques, expertise and technology," says director Douglas Cheung.

"We also constantly develop new technology and research new materials and processes to adapt to the ever-changing marketplace," he adds. "Each month, we produce innovative styles such as our black-and-white frames decorated with Swarovski crystals that communicate both passion and action."

Wah Ming operates a 150,000-square-metre, 3,000-worker, ISO 9000- and Q-Mark-accredited factory in Shenzhen on the mainland. Apart from the production plant there is an office building, seven residential blocks, a clubhouse and recreational facilities.

"The atmosphere is congenial and relaxing and we produce 6-7 million frames annually, including high quality titanium models. The minimum order size is 300 frames and delivery is 60-120 days after order confirmation." FOB prices are available on request.

Another company laying claims to being a leading manufacturer of handmade sunglasses, combination frames, metal and acetate frames is Good Quality Optical Mfy Ltd, established in 1989.

"We relocated our factory to Dongguan on the mainland in 2003," says manager Anita Ng. "It covers an area of 12,000 square metres, employs 950 workers and has two production lines that generate 100,000 frames a month."

Minimum order size is 400 frames per model for delivery within 90 days of order confirmation, while FOB Hong Kong unit prices begin at US$8.

Ng says that when customers first provide a design, the company makes a sample for approval before the order is confirmed. "All of our frames are handmade and feature the latest trends," she adds. "We use cellulose acetate from Italy, Hong Kong, the mainland and Japan, while we source metals locally."

Demonstrating once again that Hong Kong eyewear manufacturers are well and truly focused on fashion trends and innovative designs.
