Fancy Cut Diamond Jewellery

Cuts That Add Class

Denis Hazell Int'l Ltd's necklace, earring and ring set in 950 platinum was inspired by nature. The floral motif blends round and marquise diamonds in a flattering, contemporary design. The set features 328 diamonds which have a total weight of nearly 16 carats

Fancy cuts add a little extra pizzazz to diamond jewellery. Round brilliants are fine most of the time, but true connoisseurs appreciate the variety afforded by marquise, pear, oval, princess and other fancy cuts.

Hong Kong jewellery manufacturers such as Legend Jewelry Co Ltd have been quick to seize the opportunity fancy cuts offer to display their talent and creativity to the world.

About 20-30% of Legend Jewelry Co Ltd's fashion-oriented jewellery styles in 9K, 10K, 14K and 18K white or yellow gold feature fancy cut diamonds. "The fancy cuts offer variety and give our customers more choices," says Legend sales manager Dora Cheng.

Currently, princess, taper and baguettes are the shapes most frequently employed. "We are working on other shapes or cuts to meet the requirements of our customers and markets," she says. The company is also considering incorporating fancy coloured diamonds, such as yellow or brown, in its fancy cut styles.

Earrings, pendants and rings are the most likely pieces to feature fancy cut diamonds. "Customers can buy sets or individual pieces," Cheng adds. Prices range from US$100-1,000 FOB Hong Kong per piece. Diamond qualities are G-H and SI1 to I1.

The company, which also manufactures 950 platinum and sterling silver jewellery, produces a total of 30,000-40,000 pieces per month at its factory in Panyu on the Chinese mainland. Legend's export markets span the globe and include the US, Europe, the Middle East and Australia. Private label and OEM orders are both accepted. No minimum order applies and customers can expect deliveries 3-6 weeks after order confirmation.

Women 25 years of age and up are the target for Classic Jewelry Co, which is known for its fashionable designs. The company produces 5,000 pieces of diamond and gemset jewellery per month, about 10% of which - mostly rings and necklaces - contain fancy cut diamonds. Princess, trilliant and marquise shapes are particular favourites.

"We use commercial quality 10-20 point diamonds, but the total weight for necklaces can add up to 20-30 carats," says Classic Jewelry manager Monita Cheng. "Sometimes we might combine round diamonds with several fancy cuts. The jewellery can be worn in the office or at night." Mixing white diamonds with fancy colours, such as yellow, champagne and brown, adds an element of colour contrast.

Prices for rings run about US$1,000 FOB Hong Kong per piece, with necklaces at about US$5,000. Typically, settings are 18K white gold. Minimum order is 100 pieces for jewellery with commercial quality diamonds, and 20-50 pieces for finer grades. Deliveries are shipped three weeks after order confirmation; the US, Europe and Southeast Asia are major export markets for the company, which also makes opal jewellery.

Jewellery by Billion Talent (HK) Ltd features diamonds in a range of fancy cuts, including taper baguette, princess, heart and marquise. Matching sets of rings, pendants and earrings are popular, with prices ranging from US$200-800 per piece. "We use diamonds that are below half a carat in G-H colours and SI to VS qualities," notes managing director Debby Lee.

Using one or two diamonds is the norm, but if the design demands it, several more may be added. "We like to keep the designs as streamlined as possible," she adds. While most pieces are cast, handmade items can be produced on request. Most of the diamonds used in the four-year-old company's jewellery are white although black, brown or yellow diamonds can be substituted if a customer prefers.

The 150 workers at Billion Talent's factory in Panyu produce about 5,000 pieces of jewellery per month. Of that number, 20-30% are made with fancy cut diamonds. "We see this segment growing in the future because a lot of people already have round diamonds," Lee adds.

Europe, the US and Japan are the firm's main export markets, but Lee says she would like to further develop sales in Asia. A minimum order of 20 pieces per model is required. Shipments go out 3-4 weeks after order confirmation.

Elegant marquise cut diamonds set in 18K white, yellow, red or two-tone gold give rings by Betty & Sunny Co Ltd a chic appeal. Single 11-15 point G colour, VS1 diamonds are bordered by 18K red gold for a hint of contrast. "We like using marquise cuts because they're different from the round diamonds that people usually buy. Sometimes we use princess or emerald cuts too," says Betty Choy, director of the 15-year-old company.

The rings, which sell for HK$1,300-2,500 per piece FOB Hong Kong, are ideal for career women from 20-35 years of age who wear them to the office. "The smaller diamonds make people feel they can wear them everyday," Choy adds. The European-style designs emphasise simple, clean lines.

Of the 1,500 items of cast jewellery that Betty & Sunny manufactures each month at its factory in Shenzhen on the mainland, rings account for 1,000 of the total. A few special pieces are still made by workers in Hong Kong.

The company exports to Japan, Germany and the Middle East and hopes to develop additional markets. Minimum order is five pieces per model, with delivery two weeks after order confirmation.
