Jade Jewellery

Floral brooches from Jewellery Collection Mfr Ltd feature heart-shaped jadeite pieces and brilliant-cut diamonds set in 18K white gold.

FOR centuries, jadeite has been revered for its beauty and durability. Whether worn as amulets to protect against evil spirits (as in parts of Asia) or as dazzling modern jewellery, its earthy, ethereal charm always works magic.

Jewellery manufacturers based in Hong Kong have a long history of working with jadeite. Their expertise shows in richly sophisticated creations.

At 12-year-old Mio Jewellery Co Ltd, stylish jadeite jewellery is designed with special occasions in mind. "We want to make the designs dramatic and eye-catching," says assistant director Maggie Chan.

The company uses green, lavender, yellow and red jadeite in qualities from commercial to top-grade. Jewellery with medium-to-high quality jadeite, costing US$1,500-5,000 per piece FOB Hong Kong, sells best.

"We set 90% of our jewellery in platinum 900, but also do 18K white gold," says Chan.

Each month, the company creates 50-100 pieces of handmade jadeite jewellery, accounting for 30% of its total gemset output from factories in Hong Kong and on the Chinese mainland.

Items of medium-to-lower value are produced on the mainland while Hong Kong workers craft higher-value pieces. "In Hong Kong, the workers are skillful, and the finish is finer," Chan says.

The company sells jadeite items into Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, the Chinese mainland and the US. Most carry its Mio brand. Minimum orders are negotiable. Shipment is two weeks after order confirmation.

Jadeite bracelets, rings and pendants have the widest appeal, but necklaces are popular too. The company offers a series of smaller, less expensive jadeite items for a younger market segment.

Int'l Silver Jewellery Co designer Pinky Szeto strives for unusual designs in her creations involving sterling silver and jadeite. She likes combining jadeite with pearls and semi-precious stones for opulent, unique looks.

"The latest trend is to add natural red coral, which has very strong colour matching nicely with jadeite," Szeto says.

Int'l Silver Jewellery offers top-quality jadeite in various colours and shapes. "We have flower shapes, butterflies, bows and cabochons," Szeto says.

She does not limit herself to jewellery for day or evening use or any age group. "We produce all kinds of jewellery for everyone," she maintains.

The company exports jadeite items at HK$600-2,000 (US$77-256) per piece FOB Hong Kong to customers in Southeast Asia and Europe, notably Italy. Minimum order is 30 pieces for shipment within 30 days. All carry the Ki Ki brand name.

Empress Jewellery Co Ltd specializes in jadeite pieces set in 18K gold for older consumers appreciative of traditional Asian designs and for a younger clientele too. Prices are HK$5,000-10,000 (US$641-1,282) FOB Hong Kong for items aimed at the younger set, but can exceed HK$20,000 (US$2,564) per piece for those suiting more mature buyers.

"Rings are our most popular items, but we also sell necklace and earring sets that people wear to special functions," says manager Regina Ma.

Each month, the company produces 200-500 pieces of jadeite jewellery at its Hong Kong factory. Green jadeite is preferred, but other colours are available.

"We combine jadeite with diamonds or sapphires, depending on design, and may also use semi-precious stones," Ma says.

No minimum order applies. Shipments may depart within three days of order confirmation, but can take 30-60 days, depending on quantity. The main markets are Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand. Sales to Europe are growing.

At Style Lapidary Co Ltd, casual styles reign supreme, and simple, chunky jewellery prevails. Green and lavender jadeite appears in sterling silver or silver-plated pieces.

Necklaces and pendants do well, often with jadeite carvings in the form of elephants, cats, dogs and other animals. Pendants can cost less than US$10 per piece ex-works Hong Kong, with necklaces at US$300-400 each. One trend combines jadeite with semi-precious stones like aquamarine.

Style Lapidary makes about 500 pieces of jadeite jewellery per month at its factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. Minimum-order value is US$2,000. Shipment is 45-60 days after order confirmation, usually to Europe, the US or Japan.
