Coloured Diamond Jewellery

Fancy brown and champagne diamonds contrast with white diamonds in this strikingly realistic floral brooch and earring set from Goldiaq Creation Ltd. The diamonds are 1.5-2mm.

FANCY diamonds are elite gemstones with appeal to true connoisseurs. More rare than traditional white diamonds, they appear in a wide spectrum of colours. As their popularity grows, manufacturers find numerous ways to highlight the range of hues defining these exceptional gemstones.

Goldiaq Creation Ltd combines brown and champagne diamonds with blue, pink, yellow or green sapphires. "That is where the biggest demand is," says general manager Bronia Yip.

Mixing semiprecious stones like citrine or amethyst with coloured diamonds is also popular. "We may use several colours in one piece," Yip says.

Each month, the company makes more than 5,000 pieces of fashion-oriented fancy diamond jewellery at its factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland. That accounts for 40% of its total jewellery output.

Goldiaq Creation's fancy diamond jewellery is set in 18K gold or platinum 900. Minimum order varies with design and quantity. Shipment is 3-4 weeks after order confirmation.

The company exports to the US, Europe and South America, but aims at another large territory. "We hope to expand into the Chinese mainland," Yip adds.

Five-year-old World Flower Jewellery Ltd likes to showcase fancy diamonds, and it designs accordingly. "We emphasize the coloured diamond and like the contrast between white and brown diamonds. We don't mix brown diamonds with other stones - only diamonds," says owner Robert Wong.

A single brown or black diamond in an oval or triangular shape is typically set against a field of smaller white diamonds in an 18K white gold or platinum 950 mounting.

Designs are inspired by European or American styles and lean to the dressy side. "We design for mature women, and the coloured diamond is usually under one carat. We use brown and black diamonds, but may add yellow or golden red diamonds in future," Wong says.

World Flower produces coloured diamond jewellery, all cast, at its factory in Shunde on the Chinese mainland. Its output includes 18K gold or platinum jewellery set with precious and semiprecious stones.

The company's coloured diamond pieces each cost US$300-5,000 FOB Hong Kong. No minimum-order size applies, and shipment is 2-4 weeks after order confirmation. The company exports to the US, Europe and Japan but has ambitions for other markets, like the Middle East.

Small black, brown or yellow diamonds make jewellery set with such stones more affordable for those savouring alternatives.

Kwong's Art Jewellery Trading Co Ltd makes about 2,000 rings, pendants, brooches and bracelets with fancy diamonds each month for export to the US, Asia and Europe. Ring and earring sets are also popular. Prices are US$50-200 per piece FOB Hong Kong. Minimum order is 50-100 pieces per style. Shipment is three weeks after order confirmation.

The company's diamonds are less than 10 points and set in 18K gold. "We may mix 2-3 diamond colours, but always include white diamonds," says chairman Mark Ho.

The 19-year-old company strives to make simple, fashion-oriented pieces. About 40% of production carries its My Jewelry brand. "We want to increase that to 50%," Ho says.

Fancy diamond jewellery is increasingly popular among younger women who like looking modern, says Nelson Jewellery Arts Co Ltd sales manager Lussina Choi.

"The more knowledge people have about diamonds, the more they ask for coloured diamond jewellery because they want something different. We use brown, yellow and sometimes black diamonds. We mix one diamond colour with white diamonds per piece because the combination brings out the beauty," Choi says.

The company uses mostly coloured diamonds less than 50 points in size. Trends favour diamonds shaped into stars or flowers and rings with wider shanks. Already, the company has produced a flower collection using coloured diamonds and plans to make wider rings.

Its modern European-style designs excel in global markets. No minimum order applies. Shipments are 1-4 weeks after order confirmation.
