A Flexible Approach(HKTDC Enterprise, Vol 05,2008)
Versatility means not only being alert to marketing opportunities in various niche sectors, but as Product Innovator Ltd shows it also requires a firm to operate to its strengths.
A comprehensive approach is equally important, according to Product Innovator Ltd Director Arthur Yuen. "We are set up as a vertically integrated services company, and our mission statement is to help our clients and business partners with product ideas and production so that they, in turn, can better achieve their business objectives," he says.
"We view our customers as close business partners, and we hold ourselves accountable to our partners by honouring commitments, meeting requirements, providing solutions, and striving for the highest quality," he insists.
"Clients greatly appreciate our services and abilities in terms of sourcing, designing, manufacturing in the right factory to ensure quality, safety, competitive pricing, and timely delivery. They are all areas of great importance."
To support the objective of strict quality assurance, for example, Product Innovator continually conducts vendor assessments, factory audits, product inspections, laboratory tests and logistics management exercises.
Sourcing services are also very popular with the firm's clients. "This service stems from our trading origins, and we have developed an impressive sourcing intelligence network that extends throughout the Chinese mainland and Southeast Asia," Mr Yuen claims.
"We can access suppliers of reliable materials and components at competitive prices thanks to our great resources, professional staff and long-term experience," he continues. "We are able to offer products made of virtually any kind of material imaginable, regardless if we manufacture them or source them from one of our many reputable partners in Asia."
Helping clients also extends to offering advice and options on the design front. "We have in-house design and R&D teams that benefit from a cross-fertilization of ideas incorporating visualization and creativity and reliable engineering practices," says Mr Yuen.
The design emphasis is on innovation in terms of new combinations of materials and manufacturing techniques. "We do this to improve product quality, and differentiate ourselves from competitors," Mr Yuen says. "This approach has seen us develop and manufacture products for large global brand names over the years."
In the long term, the firm intends to develop new product lines bearing in-house labels. For 2008, for example, Product Innovator is placing the emphasis on clocks, and intends bringing to market a home decor item.
"We now have children's clocks available with epoxy stickers on the dials to add a three-dimensional look," says Mr Yuen. "Our wall clock range offers pendulum versions that are suitable for promotional purposes. There is an ideal space for a logo or message on the pendulum."
The range of clocks available includes a Jumbo Wall Clock, a Keypad Wall Clock, a Glass Lens Square Wall Clock, a Mini Square Desktop Alarm Clock, a Message Desktop Alarm Clock and even a Slim Watch model.
Another approach taken by Product Innovator is to add value to otherwise mundane products. "For example, also new this year is a range of LED candle lights with a sound-activated switch that is a novel way to turn on the light - a simple knock will do it," Mr Yuen mentions. "In this case, our customers also appreciate the idea of environmentally friendly smokeless candles and we see good potential for this line."
Product Innovator conducts its business mainly into Europe and the US, with only a small percentage of exports going to Japan, the Philippines and Thailand.
It certainly sounds as if Product Innovator Ltd is meeting timely demand on lots of different, and profitable, fronts.
