Trimmed Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 02,2004)
Wing Ngai Leatherware Fty Ltd's PVC ladies' handbag with floral decoration is designed for Italy and Germany
They are the finishing touch that makes an outfit, the absolutely essential accessory that ensures a woman looks and feels her absolute best on every occasion.
Trimmed bags such as the PVC handbags and shoulder bags with leather trim produced by Wing Ngai Leatherware Fty Ltd are always highly popular with fashionable women of all ages.
"They're about 60% of our production," confirms company merchandiser Gary Lam. Priced at US$4-6 per piece FOB Hong Kong, they are big sellers in Italy and Germany, Wing Ngai's main export markets.
Founded in 1983, the firm turns out about 100,000 bags per month at its 7,562-square-metre factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, concentrating on the casual-style bags and bags for working women that are its forte, as well as backpacks and patchwork leather bags.
New for autumn are brown or black PVC bags decorated with smooth leather shaped like flowers, small houses or lotus blossoms. "We take traditional bags and use different materials to make them trendy," Lam explains.
He says the company plans to increase its output of PVC-trimmed leather bags to take advantage of increasing European demand for this higher-end product, which is expected to sell from US$7.50-9.00 per bag.
Wing Ngai imports its leather from Pakistan, Turkey and Italy while the mainland, Korea and Taiwan supply the PVC. Minimum order is 600 units, with delivery 60 days after order confirmation.
Fashionistas will be equally impressed by the pink leather and brighter coloured spring and summer bags and the black and brown autumn shades that are this year's "in" looks at New Bright Handbag Fty Ltd.
All-leather handbags priced from US$10-35 each FOB Hong Kong account for 50% of the 80,000 medium-to-high priced bags the company produces each month at its mainland factory in Zhongshan.
Leather-trimmed PVC bags that sell for US$8-20 per piece FOB Hong Kong account for the remainder, which do not require a minimum order and can be delivered 30-45 days after order confirmation. "We have bags for youngsters to mature ladies," claims marketing manager Edgar Lui.
New Bright sources cow leather from Pakistan, Italy, Germany, Korea and Taiwan, and imports PVC from Taiwan for its bags, about 80% of which are manufactured on an OEM/private label basis. "About three years ago, we launched our own Xena brand, so that is now on 20% of our products," Lui adds.
Japan, the US and Europe are the company's major export markets. "Bigger bags and simpler designs are preferred by customers in the US and Europe, while smaller, more decorative bags sell best in Japan," Lui says.
European styling stands out in the handbags and shoulder bags made by Martally Leather Products Mfy Ltd, which was established in 1999 as a manufacturer of leather handbags.
"We diversified into leather-trimmed PVC and PU bags as well as bags made of canvas and other fabric materials like cotton," explains senior merchandiser Connie Chan.
Leather bags represent 70% of the 60,000 handbags its mainland factory in Nanhai produces each month at prices ranging from US$10-30 each FOB Hong Kong.
Leather-trimmed bags in PVC or PU sell for US$8-15 each for minimum orders of 300 bags per style per colour delivered 45-60 days after order confirmation. "We make casual bags to go with jeans and dressy bags for evening," Chan adds.
She expects brighter colours such as orange, purple and green to make a fashion splash this autumn in the US for Martally, which has its own Mellue label, but says the firm also wants to develop its market in Europe.
Traditional colours rule the roost at Heiman Mfg Ltd, where customers are offered a wide choice of handbags in a variety of materials, including cow leather, crocodile skin, lambskin and lizard skin, PVC, canvas and denim.
PVC bags priced from US$4-8 each FOB Hong Kong are the dominant product, accounting for 65% of the 80,000 bags the company turns out monthly at its factory in Dongguan.
Leather bags (25%) and canvas and denim (10%) make up the rest of the firm's output, which is delivered to Japan, North America and Western Europe 45-60 days after confirmation of minimum orders of 300-500 pieces.
The 17-year-old company targets working women, selling half of its products under its own Belle brand name and the rest on an OEM/private label basis.
One particular style that has caught on recently has been bags featuring embossed leather patterns. "We've also been increasing the number of inside pockets to make them more user-friendly," says Rosa Tse, merchandiser at the ISO 9001-certified firm, who notes that handbags are getting bigger this year.
Proving yet again that Hong Kong manufacturers always have what it takes when it comes to the widest selection of handbags and the latest styles in essential accessories.
