Coin/Key Holders

This pair of PVC coin cases with embossed patterns comes from LCL Products Ltd. The company also has developed models shaped like apples and lemons.

CONSISTENTLY popular as promotional gifts and retail items, coin and key holders usually command a perceived value far beyond the actual cost. In serving this competitive market segment, Hong Kong is home to various experienced companies capable of producing to match any specification or budget.

LCL Products Ltd, formerly known as LINE Creation Ltd, has made leather items since 1987 and now employs 500 workers at its factory in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland.

"Introduction of the euro currency, with its new coins, has increased demand in Europe, and we also see rising demand from Japan," says sales manager Tina Kong. The US is the company's other major market.

"Competition is quite tough, so we differentiate ourselves through styles, materials and service," Kong says. LCL Products manufactures for leading brands and has developed a line of funky fruit-inspired coin cases for a European client.

Unit prices range from US$1 FOB Hong Kong for PVC coin cases to US$3.75 for a combined key case/coin pocket in leather. Minimum order is about 2,000 units for shipment 30-60 days after order confirmation, depending on the supply of materials.

Founded in 1994, Chen Lung Leather Goods Mfg Ltd specializes in small leather goods for the promotions industry.

"Flexibility is one of the most important factors in how we do business. We can deliver small or large quantities and are used to working to tight deadlines," says director Jimmy Chan.

"Most of our items are designed by working very closely with buyers. It is a market-pull situation. We find out what customers want and do our best to provide it," says Chan.

"We have a stable business with a range of clients from North America, Australia and Europe, including travel agents, premium buyers and buying agents for major department stores."

Even so, Chan is eager to forge new relationships and regards high levels of customer satisfaction as a fundamental company goal.

Minimum orders for products from Chen Lung's factory in Shenzhen on the Chinese mainland are about 1,000 pieces, requiring 4-6 weeks for shipment. Unit prices start at US$0.70 FOB Hong Kong for coin cases and US$1.40 for key holders.

Fourteen-year-old C-Corp (HK) Co Ltd offers leather products that are affordable and practical, says director Matthew Chow. Many key and coin holders are accessories to the company's own C-Bags, Dot and Mexi Mexi lines, sold mainly in the Americas and Europe. Others are manufactured to client specifications.

Price is a determining factor for buyers. "Our competitive advantage comes from our trading division, which specializes in leather stock lots. This means we get much lower material prices that we can pass on to clients through our finished products division. We can also maintain stable prices for long periods," Chow says.

Quality remains an issue, and C-Corp works to ISO 9002 standards at its factory in Dongguan. Minimum orders can be as low as 300 units for coin, key or card holders in leather and unit priced at US$2.50 FOB Hong Kong. Larger orders are rewarded with still-lower unit prices. Shipment is usually within 45 days of order confirmation.

Manifolds Industrial Co Ltd, established in 1995, takes pride in the quality of its leather goods and bags. "I believe we are one of the best choices for high-quality, high-end products," says marketing manager Rambo Chau.

This philosophy extends to the company's coin bags and key holders, which tend to form part of larger product groups, but also become promotional items. "The important point with these smaller promotional products is to be cost effective while maintaining high quality," Chau says.

Manifolds' in-house design team keeps pace with Japanese and European fashions, placing special emphasis on colour combinations and materials.

"Sourcing special materials not widely available is one way we can offer our clients unique products and keep ahead of the competition," says Chau. In addition to producing under the Manifolds brand, the company is skilled at manufacturing to client specifications.

Manifolds produces more than 100,000 small leather items monthly at a factory in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland. Unit prices for coin and key holders are US$1.50-2.75 FOB Hong Kong. Usual minimum orders of 1,000 units are shipped 30-45 days after order confirmation.
