Sports Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 03,2003)
Cross-country competitors can rehydrate on the run by using this EVA hard shell backpack with drinking straw from T&S Bags Mfg Ltd
Hong Kong may well be the sporting goods capital of the world, so huge is the amount of business the SAR does in this sector.
High on the list of successful items are sporting bags, in all shapes, sizes, colours and materials available to suit all budgets.
A relative newcomer to the trade is T&S Bags Mfg Ltd, established in 2000. "We make a wide range of items including generic sports bags for all uses and occasions, professional-grade rucksacks, and specialty bags and accessories for skiing," says director Tanny Wan.
Major markets for T&S are Germany, France and Austria, and most of the production satisfies OEM orders. "Our products can be seen sporting many famous labels and brands," Wan adds.
Production takes place at a 2,000-square-metre factory located in Huizhou on the Chinese mainland, using materials including EVA and 600D polyester PVC from the mainland or Taiwan. Typical of the range is the EVA hard shell backpack (TS21335) and a tennis bag (TS21329) with a moulded EVA cover.
"Also interesting are our garment bags (TS21465) and waist bags (TS21488), and we also offer a range of sports bags (TS21460) and golf bag covers (TS20645) complete with wheels," say Wan.
The minimum order is usually 1,000 units per colour, but this is negotiable, and delivery takes place 40-60 days after confirmation of order. Prices are available on request.
Another leading name with an eye to Europe is Wistar Enterprises Ltd, a seven-year-old French-owned company. "Apart from a very broad range of sporting bags, we also offer bags for industrial and promotional purposes," says director Eric Tavernier.
A dazzling range of colours, from the ubiquitous black to bright reds and yellows, greets visitors to the company's Hong Kong showrooms. "Our competitive edge is having designers in both France and Hong Kong," says Tavernier.
"This means we are always at the cutting edge of fashion and in touch with market needs in order to provide customers with support from design to finished product and produce intelligent and functional bags," he adds.
Currently leading the charge to market is the Squadron series of bags. "There is a convertible running/trekking backpack (WA11761/1) (a detachable backpack and water bag), a hydration backpack (WA10959/2) for road running, and a super sports-action carrying device (WA11133/2) that is perfect for weekend hiking," says Tavernier.
Production takes place in Guanlan on the Chinese mainland. "We employ more than 500 workers and operate a facility covering 5,000 square metres. Our monthly capacity, depending on the style, is about 10,000 bags," says Tavernier.
Polyester and nylon PU raw materials come from the mainland, Taiwan and Korea. The minimum order is usually 1,000 bags/items for delivery 45-60 days after receipt of order.
Another backpack king is Win Asia Bags Co, which has been capitalising on the draw of the great outdoors since 2000. "People want to have a sporting image," says manager James Leung, "and our range is suitable for the occasional user as well as the dedicated enthusiast."
Win Asia manufactures some 20,000 items a month at mainland factories located in Dongguan, Xiamen and Shanghai. The 1,500-strong workforce fashions 600D polyester, nylon and PVC into backpacks, travel bags, cooler bags, folios and various items of luggage.
"The latest products in our range are two-tone designs that appear more sporty and dashing. Complete with PVC backing, these models come in a variety of material combinations such as 840D/600D and 1680/420D, according to the needs of the client and the price they want to pay," explains Leung.
Key design features include size and roominess, convenience and extra pockets, quality zips and stitching and appearance. "Our major markets are the US and the UK," he adds. "Business is quite strong at present despite the economic conditions."
Win Asia accepts OEM orders or offers its own X Trail and Diamond Hill brands. The minimum quantity is usually 2,000 items per order for delivery 50-55 days after confirmation. Prices are available on request.
Similarly focused on sturdy and rugged PVC bags is Miu Sum Trading Co Ltd, established in 1993. Miu Sum offers a complete range including sports bags, backpacks and waist bags.
Major markets are Europe and Japan, in addition to local outlets in Hong Kong and the mainland. "Our sports bags are very cosmopolitan in design and suitable for all ages and for all purposes," says manager Renee Lee.
Production takes place at Miu Sum's 8,000-square-foot plant on the Chinese mainland, where 350 workers produce bags for private or OEM/ODM clients using raw materials from the mainland and/or Taiwan.
Lee says sports bag prices range from US$1.50-3.00 per bag FOB Hong Kong "for minimum orders of 1,000 items delivered 45 days after confirmation".
So if your business needs a new, snappy line of large-and-handy or small-and-personal sizes, in designs suitable for all ages, Hong Kong has a bag for you.
