Shoulder Bags(HKTDC Fashion - Leather Goods & Bags, Vol 01,2007)
|The latest shoulder bags collection from J & P Industrial Ltd features a colourful patchwork PVC felt tote bag and a PU model in gold with fringe detail|
Shapes and colours may change with the seasons, but the sheer practicality of this type of bag makes it a perennial favourite - a fact which has not been lost on Hong Kong manufacturers.
They produce an astonishing variety of styles for different sectors of the market, from mass merchandise for chain stores to high-fashion pieces for top brands.
Typical of Hong Kong shoulder bag manufacturers is J & P Industrial Ltd, which produces a wide range of bags. "We have evolved from a producer specialising in OEM production to a multi-disciplinary enterprise with our own design team and brand name, Teenie," explains administrative assistant Carol Tam.
"During the past decade, we have found that our products are well-received by customers all over the world - we export to Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Singapore, the UK and the US."
Among J & P's current styles is a gold-coloured bag made of reflective metallic PU material. "It is decorated with a corsage and features a ruffle effect thanks to the use of elastic, which makes it very elegant," says Tam, adding that a larger, funky tote bag is made of PVC felt.
Both bags come in a variety of colours and are competitively priced, with the metallic bag costing US$3.97 and the tote US$3.52, both FOB Hong Kong and based on an order of 2,000 pieces.
J & P sources materials from the Chinese mainland, Korea and Taiwan for manufacturing at a 16,800-square-metre, 230-worker mainland factory in Dongguan.
"We require a minimum order of 1,000 pieces and delivery is 45-60 days after confirmation," she says. "Our aim is to provide high-quality service with high efficiency."
Similarly prolific is Yick Fung Leatherware Fty Ltd, which manufactures a highly practical, roomy PVC bag with zip top and buckled front compartment. "This can be produced in a wide range of colours - basically whatever the customer wants," says director Joanna Chung.
Yick Fung also produces a PU bag with buckles that are decorative as well as practical, while an imitation leopard skin bag made from polyester and PVC with a metallic chain strap is more fun-oriented.
"Our focus is on affordable fashion," Chung claims, adding that the company seeks to help its customers by making bags that fit current trends but are not too edgy. "We produce a lot of standard items, but the designs need to be commercial."
About 50% of the shoulder bags produced in Yick Fung's 600-worker factory in Dongguan are exported to Europe, while another 30% goes to the US and the balance to other areas such as South Africa.
FOB Hong Kong unit prices range from US$3-7 FOB Hong Kong. "We ask for orders of at least 500 pieces per style and per colour," Chung notes, adding that delivery is 50-60 days after order confirmation.
Meeting the needs of major international brands is a specialty of Splendid Handbag Ltd. "Our current highlights include a velvet bag embossed with buffalo hide and PU trim," says R&D specialist Rick Tse, adding that the lining is 210D nylon and the bag comes with anti-brass hardware and cross-stitching. "Another made of heavy canvas given an enzyme stone-wash finish also features PU trim, anti-brass hardware and matching stitching and T/C lining."
Splendid was founded in 1988 and has the capacity to produce 120,000 items per month, including travel bags, briefcases and rucksacks as well as fashion bags.
"Our factory in Guangzhou covers around 20,000 square metres, has some 800 workers and is ISO 9002-certified," Tse notes. "We use a wide range of different materials, including PVC, PU, nylon, polyester, patch leather, skiver, pig skin and cowhide."
Products are shipped around the world, including North America, Germany, Italy, France, the UK, Austria, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Australia. "Minimum order is 600 pieces per style per colour and delivery is 60 days after order confirmation," Tse adds.
The high-end of the market is also the focus for York Star Co Ltd, which produces bags made of real leather and suede for top international brands in Italy, France, the US and Australia.
"We work mostly with customers' designs and we focus on quality," claims director Eric Wong. "The bags are in the US$35-150 unit-price range FOB Hong Kong, which is a reflection of our commitment to the top-quality materials we use and our workmanship."
He notes that bags and small leather goods such as wallets are currently produced at the company's 250,000-square-foot factory in Dongguan that employs around 1,700 workers.
"However, in 2008 we will be moving to new facilities twice the size, and increasing our workforce correspondingly," Wong explains, adding that York Star's minimum order is 300 pieces per model delivered 90 days after confirmation.
From basic styles to high fashion - Hong Kong manufacturers definitely have the edge when it comes to shoulder bags that women of all ages find constantly chic.
