Nothing But The Best
Men's wallets are one of the main lines for Lico Leather Goods Mfg Co Ltd
Modern men are much more demanding when it comes to fashion and personal accessories. Their new-found fashion sensibilities pose a marketing opportunity rather than a challenge to the astute leather goods merchants of Hong Kong as they compete to make a wide range of products to satisfy demand.
Typically adept at spotting and leveraging emerging opportunities, Lucky Handbag Fty Ltd has built an impressive range of men's leather products since it began operations nine years ago.
"Our range of leather products for the present generation of fashion and quality conscious men includes leather wallets and handbags," says sales manager David Chan.
To cater to a seemingly insatiable demand for well-crafted personal leather products, Lucky has launched a new line of leather wallets, handbags and briefcases for men, Chan notes.
The FOB Hong Kong price for the leather wallets is approximately US$5 per unit, while the leather handbags cost about US$12-20 and the briefcases around US$20-30.
The company sources leather from the Chinese mainland and India for its 550-worker, 40,000-square-foot mainland factory in Guangdong Province, which produces about 50,000 pieces a month.
Lucky, which caters mainly to clients in Europe and the US, requires a minimum order of 500-1,000 pieces per order with delivery 45 days after order confirmation.
A similarly impressive array of men's leather products is available from 26-year-old Fortune Handbag Mfg Ltd, according to merchandiser Sally Lau.
Fortune's two mainland factories in Shenzhen - with a combined floorspace of 60,000 square feet and a workforce of 600 - source leather and associated trimmings from Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and the mainland.
"We are very conscious about the need for stringent quality and innovative styles and features," insists Lau, noting that the company's design and marketing teams produce an average of 20 styles or 80,000 leather products every month.
Fortune recently introduced a series of leather portfolios for men, with the FOB Hong Kong price tag ranging from US$8.50-13.80, depending on the features.
The company has a minimum order requirement of 200 pieces and ensures shipment within 50-60 days of receiving confirmation from the client, Lau notes.
Fortune's range of men's leather products is sold in the US, Europe, Japan and Hong Kong under such diverse brand names as Elle, Pierre Cardin and Harley Davidson, as well as Walt Disney Co licensed characters.
Another industry veteran is Glory Industrial (HK) Co, which was established in 1978 and produces a variety of men's leather goods that are popular not only in Europe and the US but also in Japan and Taiwan.
"Our product range for men includes virtually the full spectrum of leather goods," says general manager Paul Yang. "We produce a variety of computer cases and bags, wallets, cosmetic bags and passport holders."
Glory's most recent portfolio includes passport holders, handbags, wallets, cosmetic bags and computer backpacks at FOB Hong Kong prices dependent on the complexity and size of the order.
"Our in-house production team can satisfy the most exacting client specifications while conforming to tough quality and pricing norms," Yang claims. "We have a minimum order requirement of 1,000 pieces per item and colour delivered within 45 days of a confirmed order."
Glory's 8,000-square-metre, 500-worker factory in Dongguan on the mainland produces an average of about 30,000 leather products a month using high quality leather and associated components sourced from Japan, Korea and the mainland.
Sales manageress Sindy Wong of Ocean Industrial Co (China), meanwhile, claims her company is second to none when it comes to identifying new market trends and satisfying fickle seasonal fancies in some of the most competitive global markets.
"Men today can be more demanding than women in seeking style, utility and quality," she explains. "We have some very talented and experienced designers who are adept at meeting clients' exacting design and quality requirements."
Wong says Ocean manufactures a long list of men's leather products as well as evening handbags, cosmetic boxes and bags, and gift and premium boxes for several famous brandnames on an OEM basis.
These products use not only leather sourced from the mainland, Taiwan, Japan or Korea but also satin, paper, silk, velvet and PVC trim and lining.
Employing a workforce of about 500, Ocean's 40,000-square-foot factory in the mainland city of Guangzhou produces 120,000 leather products per month. "While we need a minimum of 2,000 pieces per order, we are quite flexible when it comes to meeting the needs of special cases," Wong adds.
Ocean's goods, which are delivered 30 days after receiving a confirmed order, are mainly destined for markets in the US, Canada, the UK and elsewhere in Europe, Australia, and Japan.
Thus, Hong Kong makers of leather goods for men have built an enviable reputation for industriousness, dexterity and reliability that translates into a steady stream of orders from a global client base.
