Hong Kong companies are at the forefront of design and production of a vast range of luggage that guarantees a good start to any trip.
For example, Alfein Ltd uses aluminium imported from the US as the primary material in its luggage range. "Aluminium offers many benefits," says executive director Keith Tang, noting that it is lightweight, won't rust or stain and is easy to clean. "It's a material that reflects our mission statement, 'Simplify Life'."
Alfein's product range includes travel cases, cosmetic cases and exhibition and production cases, which have a universal appeal due to their clean lines and durability. "Our leading markets are Europe and the US, but the Korean and Japanese markets are growing steadily," Tang explains.
Manufacturing takes place at a 500,000-square-foot factory in Guangzhou on the Chinese mainland, and minimum orders of 1,000 cases at FOB Hong Kong prices ranging from US$3-130 a piece can be delivered 30 days after order confirmation.
A similarly wide assortment of styles is produced by 17-year-old Lee Tat Handbags Mfy, which produces a range that includes backpacks, computer and cooler bags, wallets and coin purses.
"Our main markets are the US, Japan, Europe and South America," says director Pedro Keung, adding that the company's global reach is continuing to expand with new markets in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Lee Tat, whose best-selling luggage items include children's backpacks and the new DX2 series, focuses on manufacturing licensed products but also undertakes OEM and ODM projects.
The 3,000 workers at the company's 90,000-square-metre, ISO 9001-certified factory in Dongguan on the mainland are kept busy producing more than 300,000 bags a month.
Unit prices range from US$0.20-30.00 FOB Hong Kong or Shenzhen, depending on quantity, for minimum orders of 1,500 items delivered 30 days after order confirmation.
PS One (HK) Pte Ltd also uses nylon in the products manufactured at its 1,000-square-metre factory in Shenzhen on the mainland, which include PVC leather bags.
"We are strong in nylon bags and synthetic leather bags," claims manager Jims Lam. "Bags account for about 70% of our business, while 20% goes to baseball caps and the remaining 10% is corporate gifts and premiums."
The company has a monthly production of approximately 50,000 bags with prices ranging from US$0.20-25.00 FOB Hong Kong each for loose cargo and FOB (Shenzhen) China by the TEU.
PS One requires minimum orders of 1,000 pieces per item, delivered within 30 days of sample approval, which takes a further 5-7 days. "Every company aims to satisfy the client, but we stress the importance of communication so we can fully understand the client's needs and provide exactly what is required," Lam insists. "We encourage long-term business relationships and always strive to provide high efficiency and flexibility."
Quality and service are equally important for Luen Fat Development Holdings Ltd, according to business marketing manager Janet Wong.
"We are growing every year and believe it is due to an emphasis on such things as punctual delivery and strong follow-up on customer service," she says.
The company produces a wide range of bags for consumers of all ages, including travel bags, handbags, trolley bags, backpacks and school bags.
Materials such as nylon, polyester, synthetic leather and cotton are sourced from the mainland, Taiwan and Korea, with production taking place at a 5,000-square-metre, 500-worker factory in Guangdong Province.
"Our in-house design department allows us to provide customers with the samples they're seeking," Wong explains. "This also means we have a close working relationship with our customers throughout the entire process."
The three-year-old company's major markets include Europe, the US, Asia and South Africa, while customers comprise such household names as Converse, Guess, L'Oreal and Nivea.
Luen Fat produces 200,000 bags a month at prices ranging from US$0.20-10.00 FOB Shenzhen for orders starting at 600 pieces, delivered 45 days after confirmation of order.
Clearly, Hong Kong luggage manufacturers are set to expand and increase their markets worldwide with the diverse range of high quality, competitively priced and stylish luggage they offer discerning travellers.
