Leather Document Cases

All Carried Away!

LCL Products Ltd's elegant portfolios include one model made of Italian leather and suede (back) for a classic, streamlined design

A canvas or synthetic bag may be all you actually need to carry your personal papers, but when it comes to making a statement about individual style and status nothing beats a leather document case.

Without a doubt the best leather still comes from Italy, says Steven Hui, marketing manager of Wise Luck Int'l Ltd (trading as Dat Sun Trading Co), which was founded in 1981 and includes Gianfranco Ferre, Valentino and Samsonite among its OEM clients.

The leather briefcases in Wise Luck's high-end traditional Italian Ven collection are priced at US$44.95, US$76.78 and US$78.02 FOB Hong Kong. Aimed at a younger market, the Cornero collection achieves a contemporary look using both leather and synthetic materials.

"The biggest problem of wear for a briefcase is always at the corners," Hui observes. "We've solved this on the Cornero line by using tyre rubber to cover the corners - it looks very cool and it's very effective too.'' Cornero briefcases - which are also designed to carry laptop computers - are priced at US$25.58, US$26.59 and US$33.83 FOB Hong Kong.

Hui says that with a staff of 80 in its sample room and design department, Wise Luck is well equipped to modify customer-supplied designs on request. Wise Luck, whose annual turnover is about US$10m, has three factories in Dongguan on the Chinese mainland, with total production area of 10,000 square metres and some 800 workers.

Wise Luck accepts minimum orders of 100 pieces per style per colour. Delivery is promised 45-60 days after receipt of a 30% deposit by telegraphic transfer or letter of credit. Major markets are Europe, the US and Canada, Japan and Southeast Asia.

Triple Star Leatherware Fty Ltd, whose origins go back to 1975, accepts minimum orders of 300-1,000 pieces and promises delivery in 45-60 days.

While competition from synthetic materials is mounting, "there's still a good market for leather cases from people who are looking for something that has good quality and lasts a lifetime," says marketing manager Shirley Kwok.

Triple Star's cowsplit document bag with tuck lock, side phone pocket and shoulder strap sells for US$36 FOB Hong Kong. Its top-grain cowhide briefcase, with zippered main opening and two handles, is priced at US$31.

The top-grain leather portfolio with tuck lock sells for US$25, while the cowsplit leather notebook case with handle and shoulder strap is priced at US$22.

Triple Star buys treated leather in South Korea and the US for its principal markets in Europe, Japan and the US.

Manufacturing takes place in a 60,000-square-foot plant in Dongguan, which has a staff of 400.

Lloyd Pascoe Leather Craft (HK) Co Ltd has been in business since 1958. It produces about 28,000 briefcases per month for clients who include Paul Smith, Bric's, Mandarina Duck, Franklin Covey and Onward Kashiyama.

"For our very high-end products we source leather in Italy; for medium-quality leather we go to South Korea," says Jenny Woo, assistant to managing director Luk Wing On. Lloyd Pascoe mostly buys treated leather though on occasion it will add finish at one of its two mainland plants. Its Shenzhen factory, with a production area of 6,370 square metres, employs 1,000 workers and its 3,500-square-metre Dongguan factory about 400.

Lloyd Pascoe, which has no minimum order policy, delivers within 30-45 days of order receipt. Most of its output is exported to Italy, Germany, Japan and the US. Its canvas briefcase trimmed with antique leather is priced at US$30 FOB Hong Kong.

LCL Products Ltd, established in 1987, manufactures leather document cases in a 3,200-square-metre factory in Dongguan, which employs 300 workers.

Europe has traditionally been its main market. However, in 2001, to help counteract the effects of the European economic slump, it began exporting to the US, according to sales manager Tina Kong. It is also looking seriously at the Japanese market.

LCL uses Italian leather. "It looks more executive, more elegant," says Kong. Its leather "padfolio" - including notepad - sells for US$17 FOB Hong Kong. LCL also makes a leather and suede fabric padfolio, priced at US$14. Delivery is within 30-60 days of receipt of an order for a minimum 200-300 pieces.

Gigi Leather Goods Ltd opened for business in 1989. It makes document cases at its 5,000-square-metre, 900-worker plant in Zhongshan on the mainland. "We can produce goods in a very wide range because our skills are quite diverse," says merchandiser May Lau.

Gigi makes two kinds of naked leather document case, priced at US$22.80 and US$22.10 FOB Hong Kong for a minimum order of 1,000 pieces. "Naked leather is without the usual heavy chemical treatment," Lau explains. "It's very natural; there's nothing to cover the surface defects."

The company sources leather in South Korea, Italy, the Chinese mainland, Pakistan and India and its principal markets are the US, Japan and Europe for its own Gigi and Fuoco brands. Gigi's delivery time is 45-50 days.
